  • The official word from Valve is that these sites sell illegitimate keys and using said keys may cause the game to be revoked from your account or the entire account could be completely banned.

If you have purchased any keys from this seller I suggest opening up a PayPal dispute informing them that upon contacting valve you have found out that this seller is selling illegitimate keys.

PS: You should also open up a ticket with steam support explaining that you brought a key off them.

This gets said every time. It's about risk vs bargain. If you don't have any attachment to your steam account or are willing to take the risk, then you get a good deal. I personally do not think it's worth the risk (due to having hundreds of games on my steam account) but plenty of people snap these up each time they're posted.

      • I don't know if 'plenty' do. They seem to get a few positive and a few negative votes each time.

At least with someone posting that each time anyone new will know that these keys are a risk.

"The game has to be activated with Russian IP/VPN."

Valve Corporation would beg to differ with your definition of 'legitimate'. The site is also using trademarks of other companies in the footer which I assume they haven't been granted permission for…

The hilarious fact about this site is that they're supposedly a registered EU company which has to be the first cdkey site that I've seen that have actually identified themselves.

Not sure if the owner(s) are just ignorant of the fact doing this is fraudulent or they're just willing to take the risks of attracting the attention of game publishers.

If it needs a VPN to a foreign country to activate, these keys violate Valve's TOS. They can and have disabled accounts for this sort of violation. Buy at own risk!

    • what about the ones that do not require VPN's to activate like Space marines they are global keys will users still get busted then?

      • As I said, those that need a VPN to another country. IIRC, games which are not region locked are ok.

      • other cd keys should be fine, as long as they are legitimate and not stolen

The reason Valve/Steam sells product keys cheaper in Russia and some other markets is because they recognise that people can't afford full Western price. So they negotiate with publishers to allow different prices in different markets.

This business model works well - as long as you don't get people who game the system by trying to buy their game keys at the cheapest price possible. How do you stop that? By making it hard to use game keys from a different region, and by banning you if you get busted doing it.

So who do companies like UltimatumGameKeys benefit? It's not the player, because the Russian player gets the lower price automatically while the Western player (who can afford a decent price) is sanctioned for using these keys. Bear in mind too, that if these scams continue eventually Russian prices will be equalised to Western prices - and it'll be by putting Russian prices up, not dropping anyone's prices. It's certainly not benefiting Valve/Steam, because while they get their cut from the transaction it's a smaller cut in this instance. Nope, the only winner from this deal is the company trying to scam the Steam system.

By the way, what are the markups on these keys? 50%? 100%+?

      • If what you say is true, why would the keys be region locked? If it was the distributors copping the cost and not the distributors selling cheaper versions there, why would they bother implementing region locking?

Geographical discriminatory pricing requires market segmentation. Region locking implements market segmentation, so that distributors can maximise profits using this economic model.

  • This is $12 bucks MORE than a "WEEKEND" deal you posted just over a day ago. What gives? If you're going to post these dubious (quit arguing about it) deals, at least be consistent - and stop spamming.

EDIT: Right, anarchy edition. Gotcha. Still could have been one post, and I still don't think this purchase method is as 'fully legitimate' as you say it is.

EDIT2: A paragraph from the TOS for Steam:

    E. Restrictions.

Except as otherwise permitted under Section 2(C) with regard to the SDK, you may not, in whole or in part, copy, photocopy, reproduce, translate, reverse engineer, derive source code, modify, disassemble, decompile, create derivative works based on, or remove any proprietary notices or labels from the Software or any software accessed via Steam without the prior consent, in writing, of Valve.

You are entitled to use the Software for your own use, but you are not entitled to: (i) sell, grant a security interest in or transfer reproductions of the Software to other parties in any way, nor to rent, lease or license the Software to others without the prior written consent of Valve; (ii) host or provide matchmaking services for the Software or emulate or redirect the communication protocols used by Valve in any network feature of the Software, through protocol emulation, tunneling, modifying or adding components to the Software, use of a utility program or any other techniques now known or hereafter developed, for any purpose including, but not limited to network play over the Internet, network play utilizing commercial or non-commercial gaming networks or as part of content aggregation networks, without the prior written consent of Valve; or (iii) exploit the Software or any of its parts for any commercial purpose.

So while you may get away with it, it is most certainly not "completely legitimate".

This is worst marketing/pr rep I have ever seen. Are you trying to justify your violation of the TOS by telling us it's normal to violate the TOS? At least we aren't then reselling the product.

        • +1

It's also the wrong conclusion. Just because everyone violates a TOS doesn't mean it's no longer a violation. It's merely a point of the TOS that most people find unjust. However, that part of the TOS is legal (unlike a TOS which says you must give your firstborn son to the developer) and so if you violate it, you can and will be denied access to the service.

        • +1

I wasn't going to vote on this deal, but the rep is shocking and deserves to have his deal negged, I'm sorry.

      • whether 99% of restrictions are violated or not, it is in there and steam MAY take action if they wish to. therefore it is a risk nonetheless and this point cannot be argued against.

You cannot say it is completely legal. This a blatant lie. Other cd key sites at least admit the fact that you may be banned or have the game revoked for russian cd keys.

maybe YOU should learn the facts before you pretend to know them. your complete arrogance has basically assured that i do not purchase from your site.

just buy the game when it's cheap. Not playing games now is not gonna kill you anyway.

  • If it needs a VPN to a foreign country to activate, these keys violate Valve's TOS. They can and have disabled accounts for this sort of violation. Buy at own risk!
