    Price in title please

  • Thanks so much for bringing this to my attention because I've wanted a new tamper since buying my Bambino Plus. I couldn't previously find one at this size but maybe I was searching for 54mm instead of 53mm.

However… What is the difference between your version ($58 on sale) and this one ($40), which seems to be the regular price:

    • +1

It's double sided, there's a tamper on the other end.

I'd be wary as for a tool to distribute/tamp, you want one that's oversized to fit snugly rather than loosely I'd imagine….

My tamper is 58.3mm and is very nice on the standard 58mm portafilter. Otherwise you run the risk of channeling around the loose edges.

    • That one seems to be the distributor only, no tamper on the other side.

      (Oops, beaten by 6 seconds…)

      • +1

        Ah yes! Sorry.

  • in what way this is better than the tamper that comes with a coffee machine?

    • +1

The reason that I've been thinking about buying one of these is because I put quite a lot of pressure on it three times per day and I thought that it would be more comfortable and less stress on my wrist joint if you use a flat one. Maybe not though?

      • +1

I noticed the coffee taste varies on tamping force. And this might also help with that. I might have to do some research on this before I throw money on this.

    • Distribution tool it to evenly distribute the grinds, to ensure an even tamp. Tamper is adjustable depth, so you can tamp by depth for consistency. (Also, better ergonomically, if you are making a lot of coffees!)

Whether you will get significant benefits from this or not depends on how good your existing puck prep is!

    • +2

Depends what your machine comes with but from what I've seen most only come with a basic plastic tamper. Having something bigger and more durable makes tamping a lot easier but more importantly consistent.

Any deals on the 51mm to suit Delonghi EC865 and various other entry level machines?

  • +1

There's a few from other amazon sellers for the same model apparently, $45 inc shipping vs $58 from OP.

  • I just use the 'cutter' (the flat side) that is given with the Breville Barista Express, to level out the coffee grinds.
Then use a Mazzer Tamper for tamping, and a Mazzer Tamping Stand. The one that comes with the machine is too light, i like the heft of a tamp.

Then finish off with the Cutter (knife side) to slice off if i happen to grind too much beans into it.

  • +1

Hi rep, I did notice one is being sold for $35 and $10 shipping. If you made it $35 shipped I would buy it now

  • Does it fit in Breville BES870?

    • including the Barista Express

    • Yes, it fits for Breville / Sage 870 series machines.

  • Rep, any chance of getting one for a 40mm portafilter? (Flair Signature) :)

    • Hey, thanks for you suggestion, we will take it into consideration, per our plan, our minimum size is 49mm and ready to design.

  • Hey OP, any deals on Mazzer Tamping Stand?

    • You will need to see if anybody has that part. Mazzer Tamping Stand was usually only provided to people who purchased their $2k grinder.
I got lucky and happened to get mine off eBay from a Coffee Parts seller for $12.

  • Hey op, can you do a deal on the 51mm Espresso Tamper & Distributor, MATOW Dual Head Coffee Leveler Fits 51mm Delonghi Portafilter, Adjustable Depth-Professional Espresso Hand Tampers https://www.amazon.com.au/gp/aw/d/B088TNVC59/ref=ox_sc_saved…

    • +1

    • Hey, thanks for you interest, 51mm dual head was launched recently, we spent much cost and took some time to adjust size to fit 51mm portafilter to enhance customer experience, and also shipping cost to Australia is kinda high due to COVID-19, so 51mm didnt do a deal this time, maybe one week later we will adjust our price to meet customer according to cost changes. Thanks for you all attention.

      • Does this work with the aftermarket non-pressurized baskets for the Delonghi Dedica pump series?

        • Yes, we specially designed 51mm to work with Delonghi Dedica pump series, you can be rest assured, we suggest you buy it next week when its price get down.

  • +1

I have the one sided one, the distribution tool only. I find there's no need to tamp after using the distribution tool. I'm getting consistent coffees since then.

I believe the main concept is to have no air/empty pockets in the coffee puck to avoid channeling and distributor tool does that exactly. It kind of compresses the coffee as well…

but I'm very new to making coffee at home, so may be wrong… just sharing my experience.

    • +1 on this, once the top of the puck is smoothed out there isn't any need to tamp.

Also recommend getting some scales, I got the ones below which are very accurate - a combination of coins that should be exactly 50 grams came up as 50.05 - maybe .05g of dirt :)

Rip-off of the Australian designed and patented "OCD" by Ona Coffee House.

      • Page won't load for me, but I presume it's just a cheaper knock-off?

        • oh the trailing "l" got removed.

Yeah a generic OCD clone - i must confess I bought that one to see what the fuss was all about.

      • We are the original supplier and manufacturer

        • -2

Have you engaged an intellectual property lawyer (and/or have one on retainer) by chance?

    • +2

I really don't get your point and why it's a beg. That tamper is $200 and this is $58. I would call the OCD a rip off to be honest. A complete rip off!

Plus you don't get the OCD one in 53mm?

      • -1

I'm unclear what's not to "get" here.

It's stealing someone else's intellectual property and undermining the value of their work.

That earns it a neg from me. I also downvote "deals" for other rip-off products whether they are T-shirts, MicroSD cards or anything else.

Sasa Sestic, the Canberra bloke who invented the original, sunk hundreds of hours and tens of thousands of dollars into prototyping and refining the OCD. It's a niche item that has been getting cheaper over time (I think I paid closer to $300 for my V1 OCD) as he recoups his investment and finds new/expanded markets to sell them.

      • -3

The OCD is designed for commercial coffee machines, not dicky consumer ones with small portafilters.

        • OCD is for E61 but the patent applies to all sizes as ONA is planning to release versions for domestic machines without an E61 group head.

Shit like this screws them over before they can hit the market. Another win for China. Sigh.

          • @[Deactivated]: Out of interest, I cant find anything when searching for the listed patent number on the OCD website (M550602)

  • -1

Exact same model over @ Aliexpress for over $15 cheaper if you dont mind waiting over a month to receive.

    https://a.aliexpress.com/_dSLUHx4

Also, despite what op says in the description. It is not recommended to use a 53mm tamper on a 54mm portafilter. Your resulting espresso will not be at its best due to channellings from the sides.

Sry OP, its a neg from me due to it not being even close to the cheapest on the market.

    • Usually they will be just slightly smaller, you wouldn't want a tamper which fits PERFECTLY, as it would create a vacuum when tamping, or you will get tamp stuck.
I remember measuring the tamp that came with the Barista Express and it was 53mm.

      • Exactly what i was trying to convey…
A 53mm tamper will not be exactly 53mm, it'll be slightly smaller in diameter.
Hence why i mentioned not to use a 53mm on a 54mm portafilter because the gap will result in poor extraction.

  • Bought this a month ago for $70 and also the matching dosing funnel for $35. I do rate both highly. Less mess and more consistent coffee.

  • Interested in peoples opinion of this. It's a bit confusing as it looks like the tamper and distributor are seperate but it looks pretty good quality.
