Price drop. While stocks last.

I own a Chalk Home mini, and the only issue i've encountered are random stops on the speakers while playing on Spotify though it does everything else I'd like it to do easily.

Best off waiting for a deal on the Nest Mini as I have both and the Nest is much better.

    • What's the diff?

Mine also frequently stops playing Spotify for no real reason 🤨

    • Was definitely a huge minor for me before I had speakers in my room, but now that my desktop is in my room I've no need for the speakers to play music and the like.

    • It's a Bluetooth thing.

      • Yeah bt on all the google home speakers is complete trash.

I get that this isn’t their main point, but it’s pretty annoying for the times you want to use it.

    • Mine does this via cast. Spotify connect works flawlessly. Just more Google 'polish'

    • This could be when low power is supplied if using not std cable

  • +1

What do you usually use these for?
How can it really make your life easier? I am new to it and firstly want to get some smart lights here, where can i start from?

    • +1

I use the mini to set alarms, reminders, and the find my phone feature is actually pretty useful lol. I would like to get a smart power strip to control some LEDs to make my life easier rather than having to go into the application on my phone so that would be a plus.

First time to know about find my phone feature, nice one, thank you

        • About smart devices as well - you'd have to check for compatibility with Alexa/Google Assistant devices if you want to control them via voice on those hubs. The TP-Link smart light I was planning to buy can be controlled via your phone or Alexa/Google Assistant to dim brightness etc with simple commands like "Dim my lights." It's all up to you how you use it to make your life easier, and it'd obviously mean more money in the long run (not by much IMO) but I'd say its worth it.

        • I use it too often my wife rolls her eyes everytime

        • You don't need a mini. Just yell, 'OK Google… Find my phone' and and your phone will reply 'Got it. But first you will have to unlock your device.'

Worth noting that many, but not all smart powerboards, lights, sensors and such that use Wi-Fi without a hub are all built by the same manufacturer "Tuya Smart" and then rebranded by everyone else. This means you can shop around for what works for you.

For Aus, these include Mirabella Genio (Kmart/Coles), Brilliant Smart (Officeworks), Arlec/Deta/Orion Grid Connect (Bunnings), Lenovo Smart (JB HIFI), TP-Link Kasa (JB HiFI), D-Link Smart (JB HIFI), iSwitchOz (Online) and Kogan SmarterHome (Kogan). This is not an exhaustive list and you can probably find them stocked elsewhere than listed, these are just what comes to mind.

Regardless of which manufacturer you buy from, they can generally (untested) be added to each other's apps. This is particularly helpful if one app is causing you grief - you can just attach it to a different one. You can also add them all to the plain Smart Life control app. However, because I use IFTTT in my setup (using NFC tags to tap my phone for control rather than use voice - I'm a geek), I currently have all my Grid Connect and Brilliant Smart stuff connected to Brilliant Smart's control app.

The control app does require creating an account for the cloud control service, as this is what Google/Alexa/Siri/IFTTT/etc talk to when controlling your devices. It's also important to note most smart devices use 2.4GHz Wi-Fi so that phones/tvs/game consoles/etc can use 5GHz uninterrupted. If you have trouble connecting any of your smart devices, you might need (or ask a tech-friend) to turn off your 5GHz Wi-Fi for a bit so that your phone is on the right network for setup.

Note: Arlo, August, eufy and LIFX devices are not Tuya devices and will use their own apps for setup and connecting to voice control.

        • Wow
Thanks alot for sharing this, will definitely benefit of it

        • Til there's a OzB bookmark feature…bookmarked

        • Brilliant information! Thanks for sharing

    • Why the hell do people get negged for asking questions.
should be a rule against that

      Theyre shit.

Just another device for google to listen in on you.

      • No different to your phone.

If you have more than one you can broadcast messages across them. My kids like to sneak into the bedroom and broadcast to the family room wonderful messages pertaining to their bowel movements. Such a great use of technology.

      Shopping list management!

  • Is the nest worth the extra $10? I have two home minis and am happy with them but want one more.

    • Yes just check YouTube for comparison, the nest sounds much better

Still think this is the better deal you get the plug also; https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/543350

Costs more than $10 if you get delivery and haven't found any stock near me for C&C.

      • True dat, now found stock exhausted at my local 😳

        • Same price at jbhifi

    • Thanks - I bought this from Big W in Hallet Cove, SA. They still have about 9 left.

If you prefer click and collect from bricks and mortar, the Nest Mini is currently $48 at JB.

  • Don't forget your discount is you are a paid use of Google One. I get 10% off

    • Just ordered one without receiving a 10% discount. I'm on the 100GB storage plan. I read somewhere you only get entitled for 200GB plans and up.

  • Woolies gave me a nest free with 3 x $50 dollars shops. We hardly speak anymore. She just sits there silently.

  • 10% off is only for 2TB subscribers of google one. 200GB get 3%, 100GB get zero..

  • I had a Home Mini which I never really used … until I had a baby. Now instead of one of the lullaby/white noise machines, which generally sound crummy, I use this and can play anything. Works great and about the same price!

    • Yes. That's a very good use.

I bought a smart plug to make a smart bottle warmer.

  • +1

Anyone else have to yell at Google to stop a few times when the alarm goes off? Does the job though, maybe it's intended that way lol

    • Haha! For me I just say stop and it stops instantly. No need to say hey Google or anything.

  • What's the different between Google Home Mini and Nest Mini?

    • +2

Nest Mini is the newer generation of the Home Mini as Google is rebranding all their smart stuff to "Nest". The main changes are sound quality and a far field mic. Other than that, they're basically the same.
