PS5 Has Just Been Revealed. Would You Pre-Ordering One?

Looks clean to me. Perfect way to spend early release SUPER from the gov't.

Nah it will just collect dust

    • You could sell your PS4 to your mum to offset the cost? ;)

      • +2

        Lol. I don't have a ps4. I have a ps3 collecting dust which I used to use as a media server though.

Funnily enough my parents do own a ps4. When I visit them I like to have a go of beat sabre but I don't want to pay a couple of hundred dollars for a system and vr set to play one game (or maybe two, I would love to play the last guardian after waiting for it for like ten years). That's why it would be nice if they would include the software / hardware to let us play older games.

Maybe my mum will sell it to me after dad buys a ps5 :-p

    • As in from the original PlayStation to PS4? I highly doubt it will backwards compatible with PS3 and older games. It would have been advertised along with it's PS4 backwards compatibility. I guess it might be added down the line but I wouldn't hold my breath. Doesn't the PS3 have backwards compatibility with PS1 and PS2 already?

      • I'm not sure about the PS3s, mine can play PS1 games but not PS2. Backwards compatibility with PS4 is probably good enough I guess. I would have loved to play Dark Cloud again but oh well.

        • +1

Just looked it up, the early ps3 models had hardware backwards compatibility with ps2 but later revisions had it removed.

  • It cant get any better than the N64.
your all just seriously wasting your time. If it ain't broke dont fix it.

  • +5

Keep in mind that getting a PS4 at launch was near impossible here for the first few months, I expect it to be even worse this time due to COVID. Find it funny how people criticize Xbox for their games being sequels such as 'Gears 34' or 'Halo 15' but the only games of interest in the show were remakes or sequels

    • +1

Did you actually watch it? None of these ALL NEW games are of interest?

      Gran Turismo 7
      Horizon Forbidden West
      Hitman III
      Godfall

You're right about the supply and inevitable scalpers.

Considering that PS don't have another 2-3 events scheduled, doesn't look like too much will be available at launch

        • Most consoles always have a weak launch regarding games. Especially Sony consoles, PS3 probably had the worst launch lineup ever.

But with Spider-Man the Ps5 seems a little bit better for now.

          • +1

@kazuyamishima: I don't think we can speculate this early as Xbox still has another 2 events to catch up

FYI Spiderman is an expansion, not a new game

        • Surely NBA is a sequel…

          • @smartazz104: Yeah but at this point, all the 2k games have gotten worse each year

  • +1

The Amazon UK price leak pegged it at 599.99 pounds. Thats like $1000+ in AUD. Hope it isn't really that much. $700 would be a fair price point for such a system I think.

    • Don't go buy that. They always pay more in the UK for electronics for some reason.

      • +2

20% VAT there vs 10% GST here.

        • Even with that they pay way more. TVs are ridiculous. But we pay way more for mid range to high end cars. So it's swings and roundabouts.

    • Don't be surprised if it costs 1k aud. It will probably be $600 usd, that's essentially 1k aud with gst. Also, there is a heap of advanced tech in this, 16gb gddr6 and 1tb pcie4 ssd is not cheap, even 1k aud is a fair price. It's not a price I like or will purchase at, but fair it is.

  • +7

People thinking this will be around $600 are dreaming. its essentially a high specc'd gaming pc. You will be looking at $900 minimum, prob more like $1200.

    • -3

This is a good laugh. Medium spec at best…

      • +1

It uses a PCIe4 ssd and 16gb GDDR6, etc, it has several specs better than some of the most modern gaming pc's, and you could not build a PC with those specs for the price of a PS5. The console architecture is built from the ground up for gaming unlike a PC. You would have to spend over twice as much as the PS5 costs on a PC just to get better graphical fidelity. I have my own gaming PC but I really appreciate what consoles do and how they do it, it's far more sophisticated than the brute force PC method.

    • +1

But often consoles are initially sold at a loss (or lower profit margin) to lock consumers in to their eco-system.

  • +5

I went to EB games and registered my EOI. I'll trade in one of my Dreamcasts. Straight swap I reckon.

    • Wow. Dreamcast :(

      • +2

Well, that's the spiritual predecessor of the Xbox.

Sega (SErvice GAmes) was initially a USA company and even after it was sold to Japanese investors it had a strong base in the states. Sony killed their market with the PS1 destroying the Saturn. This was thanks to the new CD-drive which housed more data, came at a stupidly good price (meme: 299), and developer reaction was very positive. So Sega went to the drawing board to make something that would beat the PS1, and they sacrificed the Saturn and it's games. This delayed reaction, or gamble, didn't work out and it hurt them immensely. Whilst the DreamCast came out with a rocky start, soon after the PS2 was released. The PS2 launched at a great price, even faster hardware, and with the cutting-edge DVD playback functionality. Sega was practically bankrupt at that moment, having lost a lot of software momentum and an inferior hardware platform. The same year they ceased production of the DreamCast is the same year they released the OG Xbox. Using the WindowsCE software platform, off-the-shelf hardware, and collaboration with Sega developers the Xbox was born in 2001-2002. Some of the developers moved to working with MS as well. Compared to the PS2 and GameCube it was actually a beast and easy to develop for. Actually, it performed somewhat competitively against even Gaming PCs of the time. And the Xbox is still used by Sega today for Arcade units.

Yep, the OG Xbox is technically the DreamCast 2.

  • +1

I'm quite keen on some proper VR gaming and none of the solutions on PC are workable or affordable. I'll wait until I see what comes out of the PS system wrt VR before deciding to get one or not.

  • +2

essentially the same games with slightly better graphics doesn't really do it for me anymore.

    • Framerate.

  • +4

    build a pc

  • After seeing this launch, I regret selling my brand new ps4 pro yesterday that I got from Amazon in December.

  • Pre-ordering in Australia is a waste of time.

  • +2

There are always defects in the first gen of new console. Wait for them to make improvements and updates.

  • +1

I will wait for a while. Bought the PS3 and PS4 Pro when they first came out and paid top dollar for both. PS4 Pro still going strong and I’m not a fan of the PS5 design at this stage anyway.

  • +1

Yeah I'm pumped and will pre-order.

I expect to mostly be playing recently released PS4 games until the super sweet exclusives come along (Horizon 2 etc). Spiderman Miles seems to be a lunch title so I'll grab that too.

  • +6

This was the first time at a reveal where I honestly thought the console looked hideous. I was honestly thinking wtf is that? It literally looks like a fan made mock-up. The Series X's design isn't very exciting, but it's simple and clean (literally easy to dust too). I can already imagine the PS5 being a pain to dust and keep clean with all those nooks and crannies collecting dust. The way the disc drive is sort of tacked onto the side. My OCD would go crazy. The PS4 Slim looks miles better. I think they went overboard with the design.

    • +2

yep, as others have pointed out, it looks like one of those crappy ISP supplied modem routers. The series X isn't all that exciting but it is simple and more reflective of modern design themes where as the PS looks like they got the out of work designers from the 90's.

  • +1

Why do they always persist with the vertical stand? Literally noone uses it….

For me… The games didn't look that impressive. The reality is that as hardware continues to advance, it takes massive development dollars to actually take advantage of that hardware.

    I'll wait.

  • +7

My initial feeling is to wait for the price to decrease. I took this approach with the PS4. Out of curiosity I looked back to see how much I saved by waiting.

PS4 released in Australia November 2013 for $549
My receipt for my PS4 shows that I purchased it from Dick Smith on June 2014 for $529.

That shows that the price doesn't really budge in the first 7 month of release and I wasn't as clever as I remember.

    • I waited a long time. Ended up paying around the 300 mark but I reckon I waited at least 4 years for that. Maybe more.

    • I waited until 2016 to get my PS4 Pro for $550

    • Buy it when they release Thier ps5 pro, that would be the perfect time to get the top tier console and most importantly cheaper games 😁

I would be buying/switching them when a good trade deal comes by.

  • i only ordered a ps4 when a must play got announced like uncharted 4, rdr2 etc
so this time ill do the same, only buy it once a 'must play' game gets released, think in the line of a rockstar game or naughty dog title.

  • I'll wait a few months to see what bugs need fixing in the hardware. Remember on the PS4, the disc self ejecting, and rubber on the thumb sticks breaking.
In the past I pre-ordered, this time I'll wait.

  • maybe once it is on special 6 months after launch, same with Xbox. just wish it wasn't so damn ugly, looks like they hired ISP modem designers from the late 90's/early 2000's

    • -1

Indeed. I thought the PS3 looked bad with its non-symmetrical weirdness, but this takes it to a whole new level.

  • +2

Regret not getting the PS4 for $220 during last boxing day sales…this thing will be expensive !

  • +1

Consoles need to be these days backward compatible in the box or allow third party developers to install their tools without jailbreak etc it’s nuts. I thought about getting a switch but hacking a wii has been tacking up my spare time and at the end of the day I’ll just play Mario kart regardless

  • +3

"Perfect way to spend early release SUPER from the gov't."

When government policies backfire. Really irks me that people are foregoing their retirement wellbeing for discretionary wants now.

…Also not a fan of the ps5 design. I much rather a more minimalist design where the lines are kept cleaner and more angular

    • +3

It’s sarcasm bro. We are on the same page. Have a great weekend 🍻.

  • Not necessarily pre-ordering but I will buy around launch if the price is somewhat south of $1k. I got the PS4 near launch and its running fine now, though I use it mostly as a media player (yes for DVDs and Blu-rays) even if its not the best for this

    • So why buy the PS5 if you're barely using the PS4 for what it's intended for?

  • +1

I would never get something which would be less powerful than a similar console given they are based on the same SOC, with MS releasing details on the XSx stating 120 HZ for backward compatibility games

    https://www.polygon.com/2020/5/28/21272522/xbox-series-x-bac…

This would mean my back catalogue is protected with the migration to a newer gen of console. I understand Sony has to use MS cloud delivery system for their backward compatibility?, regardless I am not about to jump ship to a lesser powerful console at this point in time.

  • +1

I don't get much time to play games but I would make an exception for Ratchet and Clank.
I need to more about the price and 4k playback. Features like HDR, Dolby Vision support etc and how good upscaling is for DVD and Blu ray. The PS4 was a PITA for media consumption due to the lack of a good media remote. PS5 looks to have rectified that but again depends how good it is.

The digital only version is a waste of time for me but hopefully the streaming apps are good.

Same questions for the upcoming Xbox series.

Ultimately, these questions won't be answered for me until we get some solid reviews so I'm happy to wait.

As a game console in particular the disc based option looks good and I like the popped up collar design and the controller.

  • It generally takes about a year for games to come up using full blown features on the new hardware. No point getting one. Let the console mature.

    • If you read my earlier reply, 120 HZ support for backward compatibility games (older ones)

      https://www.polygon.com/2020/5/28/21272522/xbox-series-x-bac…

So if it also means newer games are supported for smoother game play, it's worth upgrading to newer gen regardless of which console.

  • +1

Only just started playing my PS4 Slim I bought more than a year ago. Going through some of the exclusives. Finished TLOU (a very good game, but not as amazing as people make it out to be), and I'm now going through the Nathan Drake Collection. Still have many games in my backlog.

I'll be getting the Series X as Xbox is still my main ecosystem of choice with all the back compat games I'll be able to bring over from my One X.

If I ever get a PS5, it won't be till they release a better looking Slim version. Right now, the PS5 looks hideous and it's apparently huge as well (bigger than the Series X).

  • +2

Own PS4 and PS4 pro. I still have 10+ hard copy and 10+ ps plus games that I need to finish first. Only then I will consider ps5. I used to play a lot in my teen years but my gaming has reduced considerably over recent years. Leaning towards not buying ps5.

    • Similar boat, I have at least 6 games that I haven't touched on the PS4 and a couple on the Switch that I really need to delve into before I even think about getting another console. I don't get much time to play any more so those unplayed games are at least 1-2 years worth of gaming for me. Unless the PS5 comes in at a very reasonable price with a killer launch title then I think I will wait it out for a while, despite how keen I am to pre-order for launch.

  • Early release super to buy ps5?

    Seriously…

  • +4

I think Xbox got this round. If the Xbox comes in cheaper too, they've got it in the bag.

    • +2

I bet PS5 out sells xbox, not enough exclusives on xbox and Sony's marketing is on point.

      • +2

Lets come back in 1 year and see that happens. I think the Xbox is going to launch as a loss leader, and kill the PS5 on price (and sales). I reckon the Xbox will launch for $799 and the PS5 for $999

        • Yeah that's quite possible.

  • +2

Haven't bought a console at launch since Wii.

    Going to wait it out:
    * See if there are any hardware improvement/updates on the console
    * Increase in the number of titles in the PS5 game library (and buy any sale titles)
    * Buy when there is a decent PS5 console bundle (or a decent price drop on the stand alone PS5 console).

Horizon Forbidden West isn't enough to convince me to get it at launch.

Once the PS5 is released, I think there will be fire sales on PS4 slims (to end production) and the only way to play PS4 games (which aren't BC on PS5) is on the PS4 Pro.

If only Sony included 4k BR drive on the PS4 Pro….

At least, I can play other games while I wait.

    • I haven’t owned a console since the Wii…

  • I will buy one in 5 years or so. I only got my PS4 6 months ago and I don't feel the need to spend money on something better just yet.

  • +1

yeah I have gotten a lot of value from the play-station systems over the years; so will be buying one. Seems like buying it on launch is a bad idea ; likely ships with limited features; and may have hardware level issues that burn you as an early adopter. I'll likely wait a year or two to make sure it's stable; and the black console is available.

  • +3

    PC GAMING FOR LIFE!

    • $1000 AUD for this console is just not competitive at all even with upfront cost. A Techfast deal can do this, but I'm pretty sure later down the track even a PC built yourself would cost similarly.

      • +1

Competitive with what? You can't build a PC with same capability for $800-1000 right now. In few years, possibly but that defies the argument.

        • Yeah definitely not now. The Techfast deals though… late last year I got an RX 5700 and Ryzen 5 3500X for $1000 and I'd expect end of this year if prices deflate again to be able to get a 3600 and 2070 Super for a similar price considering 3000 XT and the 3070 bring a price drop to both of those. Those should maybe match the next gen consoles or lose out a little bit, but PC is PC.

  • I wonder what the PS5 line up will look like,

    • PS5 Launch Edition
    • PS5 Slim
    • PS5 Pro
    • PS5 Pro xx Anniversary Limited Edition <- I'll wait for this ;)

  • +1

It's not worth owning a new console generation in the first 2 years.

  • I'll probably wait for the ps5 slim version

  • Pay more taxes instead of early adopter fees.

  • I really hope Xbox hits it out of the park when they do their June Series X event. PS5s event, while better then the previous Xbox event. Didn't excite me. I couldn't get into Horizon or Spiderman. Resident Evil 8 is the only thing I want, but thats multi platformed. But if PS5 had The Last of Us 2 as its launch title, well, then they would have me. Similar with Xbox One, they should of delayed Halo 4 a year and released it to the Xbox One on release.

What I want from Xbox day 1:
    Halo Infinite
    Conker or Banjo Kazooie
    Forza or Forza Horizon

Nintendo Switch smashed sales with Breath of the Wild. If Xbox could do the same with Halo, plus have them all accessible via game pass on day one (meaning people just have to purchase the console).
They could have a winner. But Halo Infinite would have to be near perfect for people to go out and buy consoles. (It being on PC might hurt its sales? Although BOTW was on WiiU and that didn't make much of a difference).

    • +2

Their main event will be in July, not this month. I would also like a new Banjo or Conker game. Not to mention Perfect Dark. They're sitting on such a goldmine of Rare IPs that it's such a waste if they don't use them.

If they bundle every XSX with 3 months of Gamepass, that would provide you with Halo Infinite and more than 100 games at launch. That would technically make the XSX cheaper than the PS5 at launch regardless of console price because you won't have to buy games.

      • Should include gamepass ultimate as it would help them push xbox as a platform. I played ori on my surface pro last time i was away. Just had to take a controller with me.
It would be good if they got xcloud going by time of release that would be nice.
Also i agree with you on wanting a new banjo or conker game just not like the gabage game they released on the 360

        • +1

Seeing as a new Ratchet and Clank game is being made, MS should really consider a new Banjo or Conker game. Nobody wanted Super Lucky's Tale…it's not a bad game, but why not use characters that so many people already love. Another game I'd like to see revived is Jet Force Gemini. Just imagine it with today's tech.

  • Please don’t spend your early release super on a gaming console. That’s your retirement money there that I suspect will have 40-50 +++ years to compound and grow.

  • I’m keen for a PS5. I haven’t owned a console since Wii and never owned an Xbox or PS. I’ve been a PC gamer more recently but now with WFH and a house renovation I’ve lost my gaming den. I bought a 4K OLED TV this year so I’m excited to game on that. I’ll buy at launch or close to, hopefully recoup some costs by using CC price protection. I’ll be playing THPS Remastered first up.

  • I reckon it will be $600 usd, so $8-900 aud.

  • I'll tell you how much it is. $999.

  • It'll be close to a grand I think…. the only launch title I'm interested in is horizon forbidden west - absolutely loved the first one, so yeah will probably get one at launch. I've made the mistake of buying xbox 360 and xbone as well, which have just gathered dust - so not getting series X until it gets real cheap and I want to waste some money.

  • +1

So even tho we don't have a price. I will be pre-ordering this the moment it comes up.
I love Sony Xbox and Nintendo.
My fav series is Halo. So no doubt I will get Series X at launch.
Ratchet and Clank is an absolutely classic franchise. and I can't wait to play it.

I think Series X looked kind of cool. super different. But I was disappointed by the colour? Kind of bored with black consoles.
So it was a breath of fresh air to see the PS5 console Look so different and be rocking that White :)
Very cool looking and futuristic console. Super excited

    • +1

Are you a network administrator by trade? Who waits excitedly on the new design of the latest router?

    • Once you go black….

      • +2

Nope, Love the look of the Dreamcast and Still one of my most fav consoles ever! And cool looking to boot :)

  • +1

I'm happy to wait a year or two, pc is master race anyway.

  • +4

Xbox one x is already backward and forward compatible and a beast for power.

I'll stick with that and my pc.

If I was going to buy one, it'd be the xbox. The ps5 looks goofy!

  • +1

I'm going to wait for the Slim Version. It's too bulky

  • +1

I borrowed a friend's PS4 to play FF7R. Depends on what the price is when the next part of FF7R comes out.

It's exciting to hear that what they've engineered when it comes to IO speeds from SSD though. Will be cool to see how that compares to PC and if the tech will make it's way in one form or another to consumer PCs.

    • I am hoping FF7R part 2 comes out at the same time on Xbox and PlayStation. Got a PS4 Pro now but planning on jumping ship to the other side. This may be a major factor though.

  • Unlikely to get either Xbox or PS in 2020 - still heaps of legs in current-gen and there isn't a compelling PS5/XBSX game in 2020 worth the $300+ you have to absorb as a first adopter.

    By my count we have:

Last of Us 2 is PS4
Halo Infinite is PC or XB
    Ghost of Tsushima is PS4
Cyberpunk 2077 - Any console except switch
Assassins Creed Valhalla - Any console except switch

  • +1

The PS5 will do everything and more my PS4 Pro can (notably the 4K UHD Blu-Ray, Ultra Fast SSD and Ray Tracing I'll leverage) and after trading in my Pro I'm happy to do the upgrade. EB Games will have a boosted value of a Pro towards a PS5, so for some it will be worth it, some not.

Backwards compatibility means I'll be able to play The Last of Us Pt II, Ghost of Tsushima, Destiny 2 and other online games day one, also leveraging the upgraded hardware for games like AC: Valhalla, FIFA 21 and other games inevitable to release.

  • I need a air purifier in white any recommendations…

I already bought the KFC console.

  • Don't think the gap between PS4 Pro and PS5 isn't as big as the leap from PS3 to PS4.
Sure PS5 will be capable of running games at higher res and frame rate, but that's not enough for me to consider paying the early adopter tax.
I remember getting the launch PS4 and getting bored with Killzone after 10 mins.
