Got one as well. For $149 you'd probably get one of the best headphones out there. Definitely not worth $299 but this price is something to beat.

P.S. I also have the predecessor to this, the HD 450BTNC, as well. Same quality of sound, but the buttons are different to activate NC. And USB-C is very nice.

A lot of people are complaining that the sound is bad, but with Sennheiser you can never go wrong. It might not have the thumping bass a lot of people like but it's more than enough as a main headphone to keep.

Two things people pointed out, was the mic quality and how uncomfortable it is.

For the uncomfortable part, these earpads can be replaced with the Brainwavz HM5 earpads which can give some comfortability with the expense of losing a bit of NC. Personally I buy them because with music and NC on you won't hear most things anyways, replacing ear pads or not.

Mic quality is a bit better, but still bad and unfortunately no solution on that end. It's just one of the things that has to be given up, Sennheiser seems to have no idea how to solve that problem properly (either that or the Bluetooth software is not strong enough to produce stereo quality recording).

Btw, use the Sennheiser smart app, it'll make the headphone sound much better. And make sure to have ANC on as well for the best sound.

Thanks for the ear pads tip!

I bought and returned a pair of these as they were faulty. I did find them a little uncomfortable with my glasses on, but that’s a recurring problem with me and headphones.

      • That's all good! These headphones' earpads are really uncomfortable, especially the HD 4.50BTNC that I have from earlier, and I replaced them with these and it never felt uncomfortable to wear them again. Maybe it might help with you, especially since you wear glasses (since memory foam aren't too hard on your skin around the ear).

I hope it helps anyone that has these or the new HD 458 headphones (and couldn't return them) because otherwise, they are really quality headphones for $149 (and usually you don't get good headphones in that price range, especially with ANC/NC).

Okay so I picked these up yesterday and will be returning them today. Beware, mine might be a faulty pair, but there was a really noticeable and even painful buzzing in the left earcup whenever I enabled ANC and played music. Without ANC, brilliant, really nice sound quality. I didn't find them too uncomfortable for limited use anyway, and the connection and everything was great.

So yeah, mine might be faulty or it might be a broader issue. Note that I am used to a little soft hissing for ANC, but this was far worse.

    • Update: i must have really good ears - four different JB staff listened before they could hear it (very obvious to me). Getting my refund but it's a close run thing!

    • Hmm I returned mine today for exactly the same issue.

Took a refund as I’m not convinced it’s not a design issue.

Bought a pair - mostly works, has a lot of functions, mediocre for the price:
    - they block out a bit of sound even while off, but the ANC doesn't add much; not sure it's really an improvement to have it on
    - wired sound is OK but not good enough for $149
    - with bluetooth, there is a hissing/buzzing/fuzziness to low-volume sound (eg at the start of songs)
    - pairing is really problematic, sometimes it won't pair for dozens of tries with iphone, then seems to work eventially
    - It seems to get confused as to whether to identify itself as 'HD 458BT' or 'LE-HD 458BT' - the former seems to work, the latter doesn't
    - the Sennheiser smart control app recognises the headphones, but can't communicate with them
    - the tiny controls are really difficult to use when it's on your head, not a smooth experience
    - ear-pads are OK but the narrow headband eventually gets quite uncomfortable after > 30 min listening
    - really not great for phone calls, esp the microphone

Summary - uncomfortable headband, flaky pairing, meh sound, difficult controls, not for phone calls or zoom, maybe OK used for wired listening only, probably not good price-performance even at $149. Better to stick with whatever came with your phone, get airpods or equivalent, consider Hyperx mix or arctis 3 wireless if mainly for computer, or consider a better alternative like the the high-end Bose or Sony.

Happy to shop at JB though, just about never had a bad experience there.

    • Seriously get the taotronics 85s. Half the price and I am very happy with them: comfort, sound, pairing, latency. Brilliant.

Pair more reliably then my Sony XM3s.

    • Sounds like the low volume issue I experienced is universal.

Totally agree with your comment on JB, they are always excellent.

      • is that a hissing / static sound at low volume?

        • Yes exactly that

  • Coming from someone who owns a ATH-M20x and has tried bose QC35 II and bose QC25. The comfort of the cups is lacking for someone with big ears. The noise cancelling is noticeable less effective than bose counterparts. For my unit there is also high pitched tinny noise when noise cancelling is active. Overall, the sound quality is amazing though, defs worth the price but might consider returning or changing ear cups due to the comfort.
