Can anyone give me advice on whether this would be a total waste of money for me?
I have weird ears that (cheaper) earbuds always fall out of. Also, I usually only wear one when out walking so I can hear ambient noise around me.
I'm tempted to get a Poli (Plantronics) Voyager 5200 instead, both to solve the weird ear problem and get the extra benefit of being able to make UC calls.
Pair of Airpods and Voyager 5200 are two different things.
I own both and I can confirm that Voyager 5200 is lightyears ahead in terms of mic noise isolation which makes your voice for the receiver super clear. It fits well over the ear and the person on the other of the call can’t distinguish if you are sitting in the quiet room or riding a cycle.

Thanks OP, actually scored a pair on Friday price match at OW after that Ebay Plus deal went horribly. Stock was only showing available at Wollongong but store staff weren't bothered by it.
