Refer a Friend to Purchase a Membership, Both of You Receive a $10 Costco Shop Card @ Costco (Excludes Perth Airport)

140

First referral offer I've seen from Costco that is actual money to use rather than a free bag. During June, if an existing Costco member refers a new member, both persons will receive a $10 Costco Shop Card each. Looks like both the referrer and referee have to go to the service desk at the same time to obtain the offer. Unfortunately for those in WA, the Perth Airport warehouse is excluded from the offer.

For those who don't know, membership lasts for 12 months and costs $55 for ABN holders and $60 for everyone else.

  • $60 is that correct?

Yep that's what they charge. Membership is not worthwhile for everybody. This offer effectively makes it $50 for the first year.

Maybe they are experiencing fewer patrons due to the sparse locations (much like Masters)…just too far to go to get to them!

They now have an online store which helps those who live further away, but they do need more locations, and more servos would be nice.

    • Not sure, the last two times I went which was roughly the peak of the COVID crisis both the North Lakes and Ipswich stores were very busy. Was uncomfortable at times. Its possible that new membership numbers are down, so they are trying to incentivise new members.

      • I live in Brisbane too and the location of their stores just put me off. Could not justify the savings achieved can outweight all the costs associated with shopping there. I reckon I do quite well just by buying the supermarkets' weekly specials.

        • I live in inner city Brisbane, so I agree that its difficult to justify the savings given the travel time and effort to reach either location. But when I include the amount of money we have saved at their servo, its been well worth the cost of membership.

I do agree that a location closer to central Brisbane, possibly in the South or Bay side would be very welcome by Brisbane in general. Lots of open space around the Airport DFO area for example would make a lot of sense as well.

    Why exclude Perth??! :(

    • Probably largely because they're doing incredibly well

I would assume (and it is just an assumption) it has something to do with Perth Airport being not a very nice business to deal with (assuming the land CostCo is on is owned by Perth Airport, and there are terms in the lease contract that make it unattractive for CostCo to offer this).

      • But you can still use your membership card there if you signed up on a different store?

Wired that they exclude the Perth airport store from the signup deal.

I suspect Perth is excluded because it hasn't been open for that long and there's still a lot of people out there who will just walk in and sign up without needing a friend to refer them.

Whereas the existing east coast stores have existed for a very long time and achieved natural market saturation, the idea behind the promo being to get existing members to convince others who may have never been there go go and join up.

    • Because the warehouse still gets long queues for membership on the weekend, they don't need anything to stimulate membership just yet.
