IDP Smart 51S ID Card Printer $1,682.10 (Was $2,102.62) + $17.70 Shipping @ ID Warehouse

20

You know when you need to sign up to membership at RSL clubs or gyms and they print your membership card on the spot? It’s done through an ID card printer. If you run a business that’s opening soon, you can print your own professional employee IDs, membership cards, loyalty cards and more. These printers are usually quite expensive but the single-sided Smart-51S ID Card Printer is $1682.10 (was $2,102.62, 20% off) for the month of June.

If you’re after printing on both sides of the card, there’s also the dual-sided Smart-51D ID Card Printer at $2,336.25 (was $2,920.31, 20% off).

Like a normal desktop printer, you still need to buy the card printer consumables (i.e. the blank cards and ink ribbons) to make the actual cards themselves. Luckily, ID Warehouse has a lot of cards on sale, as well as Smart 51 print ribbons.

The Smart 51 card printers are entry-level models but if anyone is after high-end card printing, there’s the dual-sided Fargo HDP5000 ID Card Printer at $5,058.76 (was $5,951.47, 15% off). Just throwing it out there.

I don’t know about you, but I still prefer flashing my recreational fishing licence or my RSL membership card when I need to. Feel’s more legit with a card. Or maybe I’m just biased. Definitely biased.

Sorry to threadcrap, but when I saw the picture, I thought it was another deal for that Sandisk USB drive going around: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/543399

My first impression was a toaster. Then like "Where's the slot at the top?" Then "Huh, this ain't a toaster." Then read the description.

20% is hard to give ozbargain a wow factor. To me, this looks like just an ads, it is not a bargain.

  • No sample pictures of the Id cards?

I wish people stop printing these cards and move on to mobile app based membership.

      What if your phones flat?

      • I guess the same treatment as if you forgot to bring your membership card. If you know you are going to a gym that verifies membership using phone, then make sure you bring your phone & you can operate your phone.

Then you go to the counter and they look up your name and your face comes up and then they see if the face on the computer matches the face standing in front of them in real life.

There really is no point to id cards any more and when the auto face recognition cameras come into play and mature enough you won't even have to say hello any more just walk in and the camera will flag you if there is an issue but we are like decades away from something like that but definitely by the end of the century I hope.

        • I think most 24 hour gyms are locked completely unless you have a card.

          • @Jenny Death: That is actually really interesting but I wonder how those prevent people cheating the system and everyone entering using one card.

If we had a good enough facial recognition software that could even see past masks and helmets and other headgear then we basically have a foolproof identification system.

Forget Opal cards your face is your ID.

Cue the movie Face Off haha lol.

        • when the auto face recognition cameras come into play

          This is good idea!

          we are like decades away

not really …. The Chinese government / Casinos around the world has been using face detection on their CCTV surveilence for decades now. Same for Google photos/facebook.

Also there are bunch of opensource library available - this one can detect 1000 face per second on a generic PC : https://github.com/ShiqiYu/libfacedetection

          • @Indomietable: Sorry I meant to say we are decades away from a foolproof face recognition system aka zero flaws zero loopholes zero workarounds zero ways to prevent which means some form of xray or infra red or something maybe to see through helmets and masks and what not and other things that prevent an easy face recognition.

General or low level face recognition is here but there are still ways to bypass a security system that relies fully on facial recognition but yeah we are nearly there maybe.

Who knows how we will bypass say people wearing masks and helmets and other headgear that prevent a successful scan and whatnot.

The future is interesting and it is now!

I wish people stop eating pigs.

      • I wish all Java programmers know how to deal with memory leaks.

        • Bro you do realise your talking to core Java right? He's taught over 1000 students in a single room and has worked for sun and oracle.

  • This isn't Broden worthy.

  • Id actually like one of these as i have an rfid entry system for my home…would be fun to print dedicated cards…but not for $1700…

    • Do what I did and bought a used/refurbished one off eBay for about $200. Great fun to make cards up for different things. Last years birthday for the daughter, I made up funny ID cards for all the kids (super heros, drivers licenses, top secret access). Costs about $1~2/card to print including the cost of the card, the ribbon and machine time.

I make cards for companies around my area as well, so the machine has paid for itself. But OMG! the amount of "can you print me a new drivers license?" inquiries I get…

      • So can you print me a new driver's license or nah?

        • Sure I can… It'll be $5,000 though. :P gotta pay for that new printer somehow…
