  • So many different models for Neochef 42L. Is it just different colours?

    • +54

      FYI,

      Model explanations:
      MS-42-66-OBJ
      Range-Litres-Spec-Colour

      MJ = Convection + Inverter
      MS = Inverter

      42 = 42L (1200W) with sensor cook
      25 = 25L (1000W) no sensor cook
      23 = 23L (1000W) no sensor cook

      66 = touch panel + knob front
      96 = touch panel only, slightly lower RRP (but same spec/features)
      36 = touch panel only, no sensor cook (42L model)

      OSS = silver frame (black door)
      OBS = black frame (black door)
      DW = white

      Features are identical between models unless stated. Ranked highest RRP to lowest for each category

    FYI it states 10 year warranty for the inverter on these microwave doors, mine went after 18 months, got it fixed by the retailer but It went again just over 6 months later so had to deal direct with LG. Turns out the warranty does not include the parts and labour cost so I actually don’t know what it actually covers, and the service call centre was hard work to deal with.
    Quite a large percentage of my electronics at home are LG and they are great products but the support is terrible. I am going to move away from the brand.

    • Crikey, didn't know that… I got a few LG products now too.

    • +6

      How is that even legal to charge parts and labour under warranty? That's no warranty at all! I would be complaining.

      Had an LG vacuum serviced after 4.5 years to replace battery and everything was free.

    • +2

      Mine just died 26 months of moderate use. No warning just stopped powering on :(

    • +2

      ACL will cover you for it dying 6 months later.

      • No it was just over 6 months and apparently 6 months is the cut off. Believe me I tried that one quite a few times on them.

        • +6

          There is no cut off under the ACL. It is a reasonable time.

          • +1

            @spaceflight: And it's definitely not reasonable for a microwave that costs $239 to break in six months.

          • @spaceflight: Yes but the second time it broke was over 6 months after it had been repaired which then put it over two years past the date of purchase so the microwave was over two years old ( but broke twice In that time)

    • I'd agree quality can be variable. It took 3 copies of an LG Neochef to get one that worked properly. First one had a faulty magnetron that within 1 day started heating food only at 30% power. Second one had faulty LED light that wouldn't light up when the door was open. 3rd one has worked fine, although I'm guessing that when it (the magnetron) gets hot after cooking for quite a while, it reduces power without indicating to you it is doing that, which can stuff up your cooking timing.

    • 2 Years parts and labour + 8 years on Magnetron (parts only).

    • Mine died in around 12 months too. Took 3 months but recommend seeking a refund from the retailer over a repair. These LG products just keep dying on you.

  • +1

    I bought this 2nd hand a year ago for around $160. Been fine so far, though worth mentioning that it only does 10 second intervals, and has no timer function which sucks.

    Also, not sure if ours is faulty, but the inverter feature seems more like marketing as things are regularly still cold/frozen in the middle :/

    • +14

      It doesn’t sound fine at all…

      • I mean, it definitely works well for heating things, just never had an inverter microwave before so I have nothing to compare it to. Usually only when reheating a bowl of leftovers (like curry, so good) can still be cool in the middle, which still happened in the previous cheap Sharp 1000w before it died.

        • Does it take a while to heat things?

          TBH we just got a very similar model (the one with the dial) and it seems to take relatively long to heat things, like most things wont be heated fully after like 50+ seconds on the highest power setting - I'm not sure whether there's an issue I should be following up?

        • +7

          Don't now if you know what an inverter does. Inverter just means it can vary power e.g. 50% power by actually decreasing the power output. Non-inverter microwaves would do 50% by doing 100% for 10 seconds then off for 10 seconds then repeat.

          All microwave ovens can leave food still cold in the middle especially the frozen. After all, the microwave is entering the food from the outside, so it will heat the outside first. The heat from the outside then needs to be conducted to the center.

          • @constipated: ah right, thanks. i'm sure i've seen marketing for them saying it 'heats from inside' or some crap, guess that was just bs then heh.

            thinking of it now though, i do remember the old one would 'turn off' now and then while heating (could hear it happen) while this one doesn't do that.

            • +1

              @Mister Plod: that was some old wives tales from the 80s that it heats from the inside.

              • @Charity: heh well they still use it on tv unfortunately, which is probably where my mum got it from

    • +1

      Honestly I've wanted this microwave for 3 years. Wife says "no timer, no way". Stupid I know but seriously why would they remove it…if only it has a timer, I could own it :( and yes I realise every device in the house has a timer but happy wife, happy life.

      • You mean you turn it on and you need to remember to go back and turn it off? Surely it has a timer?

      • This one is good and has a timer. The sensor reheat function is great

        https://www.appliancesonline.com.au/product/panasonic-nn-st6…

      • What do you mean by timer? like setting a time? All previous microwaves had the ability to set time, but with this - if you need to cook something for 1.5 mins, then you press START 3x times (30 + 30 + 30).

        I also have been wanting this for the last 3 years and paid $250 for mine at JB HiFi.

        It's massive, and the inverter is the best!! No more hot outside and cold middles. Cooks evenly. The LED light makes a huge difference too, and the door is easy to open.

        • No, it has a clock. I mean a separate timer function as in kitchen timer that counts down - like ovens have to let you know that your food's been cooking for 20 minutes and it's time to check it or take it out, etc..

          I suppose they figured most people have phones with them nowadays, but still seems an odd feature to leave out, as it certainly wouldn't cost them anything.

          • @Mister Plod: Agreed it is odd to leave out considering devices from the 1980s all had it and this doesn't

            I was against it for this reason however my oven has a timer and also I find I use the Google Home most of the time which is actually handy to set when hands are full in kitchen

            • @chrig: I use my phone, then I don't miss the timer because I'm not in the kitchen

    • I have this model as well and while its been ok, i agree, i do not like the minimum 10 sec increments either.. for example, the fact that you cannot enter in say 16 seconds is a annoying.

  • +1

    How does the inverter make any difference?

    • +3

      Inverter reduces the power while a traditional microwave does pulses of full power. This makes a big difference on low power settings, e.g. with the inverter it's easier to defrost meat without cooking parts of it, and you can do things like soften butter or ice cream without melting it

    HUMS THE ANNOYING YET PLEASANT END CHIME

    • +4

      My workplace had two in the kitchen and drove me nuts. There’s no way to disable the sound, unless you disconnect what makes the sound. I wouldn’t buy ones if these purely because of the sound.

        I found out the other day most microwaves have a way to disable sounds..
        Press and hold the 'Clear' button then press the 'Keep Warm' button for 5 seconds then the display will show the changing state 'On' or 'Off" of the beep sound.

        Probably a combo like that

        • Thanks. I’ll pass that on.

        • +4

          I tried that but all it did was unlock a secret character.

            • +1

              @sjp770: It worked! But now microwave turned into a Megadrive

            • @sjp770: Haven't been able to disable my LG microwave tune, different model, if there was a way I would rip out the speaker

            • @sjp770: I remember this code but forget the game :(

              • @fusion17: It's the komani code and according to my 3 year old, it plays a key role in one of his fave movie, Wreck-it-Ralph.

                Can confirm UUDDLRLRBA does not mute our Miele microwave - he's tried it several times. If anything it makes tune louder.

      • Tried this? Saw it in a review: Touch and hold the stop/cancel and inverter/defrost buttons for two seconds, and the words "off" will appear - hidden feature not in the manual apparently

    • +3

      I try and stop it 1 second before it plays, just to deprive it of glory :p

    • What is it with this trend from South Korean appliance manufacturers that every product of theirs has to play musical completion tunes?

      Pretty much every kitchen or white goods appliance from Samsung and LG now has to play musical tunes not only when they finish a cycle/program (like in Microwaves, Dishwashers or Washing Machines) but also when cycling through menus/functions and to warn you when doors have been left open for too long.

      Goddamned K-Pop influences everywhere.

      What happened to the humble 3 beeps like Panasonic still does?

  • How strict is their manual saying I need 20cm of space on each side? I'd only be able to have 3cm on the left and right and 10cm at the back, is that bad? Wouldn't want it to overheat or something.

    • +2

      not a microwave engineer, but i reckon it's fine unless you're running it continuously for hours. I've had lower clearances most of my life and never had an issue.

  • How do LG's compare with Panasonics? My current microwave has kicked the bucket.

    • +4

      I typically do not like LG products and have avoided purchasing where possible

      In the past have used Sharp microwaves with great success, however the latest batch all look subpar and I wonder if they are rebadged ones.

      This microwave is an exception. To me the build quality is better than Panasonic with a nice heavy latch, easy to use and the inverter heats evenly.

      Couple of things to note; no kitchen timer and if you need to reset the clock you need to pull the power out at back. For me these aren't issues as I have just disabled the clock which I think looks nicer and use the Google Home as a timer however should factor these

      I would have no hesitation in recommending this. In my kitchen I frequently get comments from visitors at how impressed they are with the microwave

    • I had a Panasonic that died then got a hand me down Panasonic from the in laws because it had a slightly sticky button release. That too has kicked it. So personally, I probs wouldn't get a Panasonic again. LG is just going off what people have said and based on my brother's unit which seems pretty good. People complain about the music, but it's not really that loud… I guess we'll see living with it though.

      • Agreed - the new ones aren't like the 1990s made in Japan or US made ones are are really cheaply made

        Ive got to say I am impressed with the LG and inverter heats very evenly. The build feels good and has a two year warranty on the unit

        Worth giving a go

  • Might get cheaper towards end of the month, but decided to get one now instead of waiting to see.
    Thanks!

  • how does this compare to breville’s similar priced model?

  • Not as hot as id like it but nice design
