Obviously their claim of 82% off RRP $279.99 doesn't mean much, but $50 is still a reasonable price for a set of 3 decent looking knives.

House have a permanent sale on everything

    • +3

They are the chemist warehouse of the home wares stores

    • I’ve seen the one in Rhodes go on at least 3 closing down sales. Still very open

      • Highpoint VIC has been closing down for about 3 years. But they just moved to another location at Highpoint…

Similarly The Book Grocer has the same idea… closing down since open because it's a "Pop-Up" store with a "short" term lease, which interesting last them for like 5+ years.

  • Can anybody vouch for the quality of these knives? Thanks in advance.

    • +1

Yeah they're good, though you only really need one santoku knife

    • These are excellent knives…I’ve been using them for two years and very well everytime…very good buy at such price.

    • +1

I reckon for $50 you can't get any better knives. But the problem is you don't need three Chef/Santoku knives.

  • +2

    That's a pretty sharp price… sorry

    • Worst joke I've ever heard in my whole knife.

  • I was gonna say, why would I need 3? But I need some good knives.

      Give one to your mum.

          I'm on the waitlist.

  • How do these compare to the Global Knives range? Anybody know?

    • Global are great. But too expensive.
I think these would be a good compromise

    • +1

Global is ahead. But Baccarat can be used well as long you sharpen it regularly

      • Which brand would you recommend for least frequent sharpening? My $15 IKEA one is great when sharp but needs fortnightly sharpening.

I would advice you to have a look at Tojiro brand knives a go (. I am not sure about your experiences, but it takes a lot of times to learning about knives and sharpening at a wrong angle can damage your knife. Having a few knives allow you to learn about different styles. So I do have a mixed feeling about knife that you are wanting to buy, but not breaking your bank. I have a few brands, I would recommend you to try the Global, it would be a stepping stone from this knife. Here is my list

          (1) Tojiro/Global chef knife

          (2) Victronix/Wusthof santokus

          (3) Kiwi Chef knife

Idk how much you willing to spend, but under $100. you can't go wrong with these. You will not get $200 performance, yet it is sufficient for house uses.

          • @Yaren24: I have used a $7 kiwi knife since 2012. Decent blade size, easy to sharpen, holds its edge well. I think it's a great choice for home cooks and anyone who is learning to sharpen

            • @bobkin: kiwi knife is great, $7 is amazing when you compared to most stores' $7 knives. I don't think we could find many competitions under $10.

            • @bobkin: Second yaren's advice, although in my opinion tojiro is better than global steel wise. Global's cmv7 is noticeably softer than tojiro vg10 core, dulls faster.

Kiwi also great for $7 but steel quality is no vg10 or CmV, good for people who don't want to "care" for their knives.

Honestly though these knives would probably be better than the standard sharehouse fare of kmart knives.

          • @Yaren24: Thanks for the advice!

          • @Yaren24: I would flip 3 and 1, when looked after and sharpened properly, the Kiwi knives actually stay sharp for ages…weeks. and they are so easy and fast to sharpen, once you know how.

They need to be babied a bit though. For most people I recommend Victorinox, a bit sturdier, good design, steel, heat treat, easy to sharpen, and good value.

    • Both are great. But iD3 at this price is super good value for bucks

    • Global are over priced, but so are these I feel. The design is decent, but the steel 420J2 is notoriously soft and very hard to sharpen: it for.s a burr very easily and it's hard to get rid of. This means you really have to fight to get a high level of sharpness, and if there is a burr it dulls almost immediately.

My value pick is Victorinox, on sale.

Japanese Steel but made in china. I bought Shun knife which are still made in Japan.

    • Yeah….but shuns are at least $150.
Maybe this first, then a shun later after a noob learns to sharpen a knife

  • "Included in this set is a 12.5cm santoku knife, a 15cm santoku knife, and a 18cm santoku knife"

Is that the length of the Blade or the entire knife?
Some people are in for a rude surprise if that's the total length.

  • You may be right mate…

  • I currently use German steel ice hardened knife from ALDI. Is this a step up?
