Pretty sure you need a hue bridge. Can't communicate directly to the bulbs but through the bridge.
Yes, you can use them without the Hue bridge. But there's no remote control once you leave the house, and third-party app integrations aren't supported.

Not correct. You need a ZigBee hub to connect to the bulbs. Google home won't give you that.
But Philips have some bulb options with Bluetooth built in nowadays…

Google home and Amazon Echo plus all have built-in Smart Home Hub, they definitely work with Philips hue lights. Amazon is even giving Echo Plus buyers a free Hue light bulb to get them started. If you can't make it working, it is your problem.
@jimojr: Google Home Does not Contain Zigbee.
Only the Amazon Echo plus has Zigbee.If anyone has bulbs and no hub let me know
