  • Man thats a good price, almost back to pre-covid if i am not mistaken. Very good sign going forward for parts.

    • +1

Yup I paid $460 around 10 months ago when it was on special.

    • +1

yep AUD edging towards 70 cents now. perfect timing for me as need to buy in about 3 weeks time.

  • The price will either stay or go down more as Ryzen will release a refresh XT version of 7 and 9 series before the new Ryzen chips are out.

  • $448 for the US stock, also good deal, torn between which one to buy, as I'm not in a rush. My 1600x is just fine atm.

    • +2

$10 difference, might as well go for AU stock. 1600X isn't bad, if you're in no rush, then maybe it's better to just wait another 6 months for ryzen 4000?

  • TBH, depending on your use case, if just for games might as well use a 3600. I bought this too!

    • -2

Some games are quite cpu intensive though and would definitely look at 3700x at a minimum if you want to future proof it for several year.

Edit: the benchmarks aren't actually much higher so you're probably right as just a purely a gamingn pc if you're not also multitasking.

    • +2

3600 is the golden sweet spot now. But if you're satisfied with GPU performance, and can spare the budget then 3700x is much more appealing IMO. I'd rather spend $200 now than having to do a platform upgrade in the next few years when 6c ain't gonna cut it. Me and most of my friends usually run dozens of background apps when gaming which makes the 3700X a much safe bet with lots of extra headroom.

  • +2

Ugh I really don't need to upgrade (have a Ryzen 2700 now) but at this price it is seriously tempting…

    • i am still using a 1600 which is still quite good for my needs (game, internet, youtube, excel with loads of data, modelling, writing…)

    • +1

Same. I'm on 1800X and there's zero reason for me to upgrade performance-wise. I tried really hard to persuade myself not pull the trigger. I'll save the money for the coming 3080 Ti in September and I believe that's the performance boost you can see (atm I'm on 1080 with an ultra wide 34' gaming monitor, bit underperformed in some quite demanding games when I max every setting)

  • +1

These CPUs are brilliant. I've got mine running at 4.4GHz on all cores and it's stable AF using an AIO cooler.

    • Looks like you got yourself a golden chip! Mine can barely do 4.25Ghz all core at 1.45V+ (just to try out, not wanna risk my chip), even single core struggle to push 4.4Ghz. I heard most of the first few batches in Jul last year couldn't push to the advertised clock speed even after all the bios updates.

      • Yeah the new Zen 2 CPUs seem to be composed of much better silicon.

    • Same 4.4ghz on my 3700x without even trying.

      What MB u using?

      • Is that 4.4Ghz on a single core load, or all core load test?

Mine is among the first batch Jul/2019, used with MSI Mortar, it boost 4.3Ghz single / 3.95Ghz all core out of the gate and 4.3/4.1 with PBO + Auto OC. There were dozens of reddit threads and youtube reviews back then about the zen 2 CPU cannot reach advertise clock regardless of boards. I think from some of the bios updates, I sometimes got 4.4 out of the 2 best cores, but recently they can only do 4.3-4.35, back to the beginning.

I heard reports here and there of people reaching 4.4Ghz single / 4.2+ all core load with PBO in the recent months, so probably the manufacturing process has improved.

        • All core under load.

          • @Skramit: Impressive! What voltage you're running at? and temp/cooler type?

            • @Kingduytan: 4400mhz @ 1.35v
              4300mhz @ 1.25v

So I'm actually running 4300mhz now due to the big drop in voltage it was stable at.

Silverstone 360mm AOI Cooler. Temps were aorund 80c under full load at 4400 but much better 75c at 4300.

              • @Skramit: 4.3 @ 1.25v very nice. It feels like I'm running a 3700 non-X =)) I can only run stable at 4.15 @ 1.25, it does yield nice temp 65C in CB20 loop with air cooler.

  • That's frustrating, I just ordered one from Amazon yesterday for $475…

    • You can cancel if it hasn't shipped.

    • +3

Get in touch with Amazon they’ll refund you the difference. I did.

      • +1

Thanks for the advice. I've just contacted Amazon Customer Service and they've credit my Amazon account for $10. Since my order has already shipped the rep couldn't cancel the order easily as the package would have to have been intercepted. Happy with the outcome!

        • Sadly they haven't shipped mine, said they were out of stock in Melb and waiting for replenishment from another Australian depot. They did give me another $10 credit for the delay though.

  • Thoughts on this vs the AMD Ryzen 9 3900X 3.8 GHz 12-Core for $675? I know they're significantly different but is it worth the extra $217?

    • +5

If you need the cores for production then yeah. If you're only gaming then no. This or a 3600 will be fine for gaming. You can put 200 into a better gpu.

      • Cheers. In the past I have missed the balance between the investment in CPU and GPU.

        • This is terrible for gaming if you're buying it instead of a 3600 and a better video card.

        • If you could get at least RTX 2070S, then get this CPU. Otherwise, prioritize best GPU you can get with 3600.

If you're on 2080 Ti then just go crazy with 3900x, doesn't matter haha. Joke aside, if you can spare some bucks (without gimping CPU or GPU), push for 3600mhz cl16 RAM will also yield nice gaming improvement.

          • @Kingduytan: even 3300x is great for gaming which benches within 98% of 3600. save the extra dough for graphics as others said.

            • +1

@selphie: 3300x will run to its capacity in many modern titles, and will struggle if you have stuff running in background (which is why I upgraded from a 1.5 year-old i7 7700k to this CPU). Besides 3300X only save like $60 compares to 3600 in a usually $1000 mid-tier build, and you lose out on 2c/4t?

3300X is only nice as a stopgap when you wait for something better like ryzen 4000, or if you really must have a pc now and want to save for huge upgrade in a year time. And It needs to price at $150 or something to be viable.

With all that said, since Jacked is wondering between this and 3900x, I'd assume he's not that tight on budget. You could get a 3600 + 5600XT for the price of a 3900x.

              • @Kingduytan: Thanks all. My system is well overdue for an update (i7-8700 3.2G and a 1070). Trying to balance whether to go all-in now and thought if the 3900 future proofs me for a year or two longer the $200 is probably worth it. I'd like to say I'll be using it for production but realistically it will 99% be a gaming machine. Happy to spend the money for the right equipment. So, maybe the 3700 and a 2070.

                • +1

@Jacked: Oh… i7 8700 isn't even that old. Its gaming performance should be very close to 3600/3700X. I think you probably should wait for Ryzen 4000, unless your work demand it.

Depends on what monitor you have and games you're playing, you could also hold on to the 1070 and wait for RTX 3000. If you're playing 1440p then I could see 1070 is a pain in the neck and upgrading to 2070 Super now would fix it nicely.

                  • @Kingduytan: Thanks. Yeah, probably being a little impatient. I hear the Ryzen 4000 could be hear October and can wait until then. Thanks again.

    • +2

as someone who just got the 3700X its a good processor but I am finding I have core envy and wish i'd gotten the 3900X.

  • +1

Just bought it this morning from Amazon @ $450. This is so far the best price I have seen…I am following eBay and few other sales but 3700 has not come down to this price.
So till this is ON…grab it if you need it.
    Cheers

  • Looks like no more stock from Amazon AU, price is 500+ there now.

    • yep cheapest AU now is Shopping express @499
