I Had A Wonderful Car Sale Experience, What about You?

I have been reading here about all sorts of problems about people selling their cars or buying one and facing different issues, I thought its only fair if I share my exceptional experience as well.

here is the story, I was selling my car and listed in on facebook marketplace it was a 2011 Hyundai i45. Listing price was 9K and buyer enquired and asked for a discount and i offered 8K.
The buyer asked for my BSB ACC number and I gave them. She sent a screen shot right after that with a receipt from their bank. I told my self its just another scam cuz the buyer didn't have my phone number, name, address and didnt even inspect the car, she just asked if its working fine.

two days later money was cleared in my bank account and i was shocked couldn't believe whats happening. I mean if she really wanted the car she could have just make a security deposit so i would hold the car for her. Its first time in my life im experiencing something like this.

I contacted buyer and informed her money has been cleared. she came same day for pickup and I tried to do everything I could to make it a great experience for her.

Has anyone else had a smooth transaction at this level or beyond?

    …and then I woke up…

    • Aw man, I hate it when I wake up from a nice dream…. I remember dreaming about having super powers and could fly, and shoot fireballs and other cool powers like turn invisible and no one would be able to see you or instantly teleport to anywhere in the world….it was awesome! ….then I woke up and tried to do the same gesture to shoot fireballs but nothing happened… Tried to jump up thinking I would be able to automatically go into flight mode, like how superman jumps to fly, but nothing…. I'm very sad my real life is lame…

      • … Tell us more!

        • Well…if you want the details…..it was a while ago and don't really remember much of the details myself…. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Sure be nice to relive that same dream though….and be able to record my dreams so I can play them back whenever I feel like watching myself…either in first person view or third person….

I think I only dream when I feel extremely sleepy where I can barely keep my eyes open and just wanna drop dead on some surface and close my eyes. If I'm not all that sleepy and it's just your everyday rest, then I don't really dream anything, just nothing happens from the point I close my eyes and the next morning. Or at least I should say I have more of a chance of dreaming something when being sleepy than not.

I once had a dream where I was married to a hot grill and had a cute baby grill and everyone around me was oddly happy and smiling even when they shouldn't be… I could tell they were forcing that happy smiley face….

Oooh, another one where I had a dream in a zombie apocalyptic scenario and I was like the leader of a surviving group trying to make ends meet and scavenging for food and water in the world whilst fighting back zombies with guns and whatever else we had….that was pretty cool…and …….damn jump scares everywhere…hate their asses! Hahahaha

          …what else…?

          • @Zachary:

where I was married to a hot grill

Did this hot grill have a nice pair of buns?

            • @D C: Very, she was a redhead too I believe…. The little grill I had turned out to be a blonde instead….but boy was she smart(er than the usual stereotypical blonde…)!

Oooh, I remember some more dreams now:

              • I had this one where I was playing a game and I was actually in it and felt every aspect of the game, including the pain that was dealt towards me. I somehow have the ability to swap views, between me ingame as if playing the character or outside the game as if I was the player controlling the character using the keyboard and mouse! That was pretty neat.
              • Another one where I was a professional street racer, challenging randoms and winning all the car races just for fun. Had a few close calls like when I thought I wouldn't make this one drift because I was going too fast but somehow killed it and drifted the corner like a legend! They weren't all drift races, some were sprints and drags… What was I driving? Dunno actually, I never got out of the car to see myself….probably some exotic supercar that was a perfect all rounder, if it can beat every single racer I challenged in every single race type…

  • And then the genie said "Master……

Oops, sorry, that was a different dream.

was it an atm deposit? sounds dodgy

  • +2

Sounds like the first car I bought. 5k, sent the money through in a couple of days after only seeing a few photos and picked it up another couple of days after that. Not everyone in the world is trying to scam you.

    • +4

      that's exactly what a scammer would say…

  • And everything was done via text message without any verbal communication.

  • You both got lucky.

So many issues that could have arisen.

Nice, but 8k for a half baked 9 year old korean suv is still expensive, the young lady must have been given free money.

    • "I DoNt LiKe KoReAn CaRz… KoReAn CaRz = BaD!!1!!1!!!"

The i45 is NOT an suv, it's a sedan. And depeding if it was auto/manual/Active/Premium or Elite, market value for a private sale is around the $8,000…

      • i35 is the suv

      • -1

well, seden really? then it should've worth even less

    • Speaking of half-baked, who remembers the nine-year-old Japanese Suzuki Kizashi?

Had a guy buy a BMW I had from interstate, transferred me the money sight unseen.

On the other end of the spectrum, had a guy an X-Trail on eBay. When he came to an pick it up, they took it for a drive, and complained it didn't have as much power as the V6 Prado they drove down in. Then tried to bargain down the price. I told them no, you purchased it on eBay, you own it. They then gave me the money in some $50s, mostly $20s and $10s. After counting, they were a grand or so short. I mention this, they then pull the rest of the money out.

Had another guy coming to buy my ASX, cheapest one on car sales, high spec, offers my a low ball offer if I'll give him 3 months warranty?!

Plenty of other experiences ranging between the really good and really bad. Easiest way of selling is to drive it to the auction, then wait for the money to be in the account.

    • Had another guy coming to buy my ASX, cheapest one on car sales, high spec, offers my a low ball offer if I'll give him 3 months warranty?!

I hope you accepted. Very fair for an ASX 😁

      • Tell me about it, what a hard car to sell.

    • What's this in-person auction thing you speak of? Link?

      • +1

In person auction? There are plenty, pickles, Manheim etc. I use lloyds because they are easy.

There also the "we buy your car people", who lowball the crap out of you, but if you've bought at the right place you can still make good money quickly.

        • Thanks, didn't know you could sell a single car, or small items like appliances.

Those sites are a little bit addictive - I almost bought a shipping container granny flat.

          • +2

@psdillon: Yeah, they are getting pretty picky with single appliance type sales though. I've seen things go for bizarre prices, at graysonline, a used specialist tool went for over $800 when you can buy them new for about $350.

Haha I know that feeling, so much stuff you didn't know you needed.

            • +1

@brendanm: I saw something like this. A G-Scan 2 code scan tool was at auction, I think it was Pickles or Grays and it was bid up to $2,500 without any of the adapters or plugs. This price didn't include the buyers premium. A new one (with the box and all the adapters) was a few hundred less than what the auction one ended up going for…

  • Went to see a car off Scumtree.

The seller instantly offered $500 off when I said I was interested.

Been going great for 1.5 years so far

  • That is so far beyond normal, unless the mega wealthy want a 2011 hyundai

Yeah in 2006 I bought a 1982 Toyota Corona for $750 in NZ from a backpacker, I sold it 11 months later to another backpacker for $750. That was a good car.

A few years ago I had my Toyota 86 GTS up for sale. It had been up for a little while with a few low ball offers here and there. Out of the blue I get an email from someone in Queensland who says he wants it, and he already has finance for it. I thought it was a scam, he sent me a photo of his licence, got the finance company to give me a call about the car, I had to take it to their office so they could see the car existed. Went through all that, and the company gave me the money. The guy had been approved for $30k even though I was selling for $28k. He asked me to take the full $30k, organise to send it up on a truck, and then transfer the remaining balance back to him. It all went hunky dory. I was going to ignore his email at first but he turned out to be genuine.

    edit: I'm in Vic

    • (GOOD) bought my first car on carsales, i flew to sydney when seller agreed on price over the phone. it was almost 10k off the market value near new. had a look and went to the bank for transfer and drove back to melb. amazing car
    • (GOOD) sold a cheap old car on gumtree, guy came the next day had a quick look and bought it cash
    • (BAD) tried to buy a car off FB market and this guy seemed really nice and a lot of ppl seems to know him and his car, turns out he was lying through his teeth about the cars history and lying to everyone about who he is.

2/3 good experiences is not a bad record for me so far, it seems like the nicer they are they more careful you should be!! when you buy cars try to ask questions you already know the answer of to see if they are genuine or not.

Back before gumtree I had a car listed in Just cars. Bit rare and a classic. Guy rang up from 2hr drive away, barely asked a question, offered full price and wanted bank details.

I was a bit reluctant to hand out bank details so offered for him to pay my brother in law who was local to him. Next morning he rocked up with $8500 in cash and handed it to a complete stranger (to him).

The next weekend he arranged to catch a train and pick up the car. Wouldn’t accept a lift from the station and got a taxi. Picked up the car and drove away. Only heard from him when he got home and had a minor question about the running of the car but was a happy customer.

It happens. I’ve sold other cars to locals easily enough, not everyone is a douchebag.

  • Sold a car for a mate years ago. 5yo Yaris. Someone bussed from Ararat to Melbourne inner suburbs to buy a 5yo Yaris. Priced averagely.

They test drove and handed payment in full by cash, rego transfered same day.

    Not a dream.

  • Sold a car yesterday to a colleague's daughter. Payment cleared, rego transferred. So far so good…

I keep waiting for something bad to happen.

    • Yeah, there is a tendency to offer a discount when selling to friends, it should really be the other way around. They should be prepared to pay more from someone they trust, and you need to receive more because you may be held accountable if something unexpectedly goes wrong.

      • It was a 2018 Suzuki Swift GLX Turbo that belonged to my SIL. He paid $18.5k for it. SIL paid $22k for it 2 years ago. That's on the higher end of what we were expecting. He didn't even haggle.

  • I had a couple of similar ones. Sold my electric car in Perth to a buyer in Qld. He did get me to bring it to a friend/relative in WA to check it out for him. Then paid in full by bank transfer and arranged a car transport company to take it.

The second one was a motorbike, I had a message offering to pay full asking price providing I could bring it to Freo hospital for him.
Sounded dodgy, but followed up with a phone call, turned out he needed to get back to Esperance and all the flights were booked out due to bush fires, so he thought he'd treat himself to a new bike (n+1). He was so happy to have it, it was a great experience. Never did ask why he'd been in hospital and if he was really fit to ride to Esperance though.
