Kewpie Japanese Mayonnaise 300g $3.75 (Was $4.70) @ Coles

600

Not the cheapest it's been in the past but very keen to try for the first time.

With its rich and creamy texture made from egg yolks and a unique blend of vinegars, this “umami” style mayonnaise has a refreshing aroma and a tangy depth of taste.

once you have Kewpie, there really isn't another option

    • +5

Depends on what it’s for, it’s not a very tangy mayonnaise.
Ones like Hellman’s are much better/nicer for salads.

  • +7

I like their wasabi flavoured variant.

    • Have you tried Sriracha flavored?

      • No, but will get one if I see one on the shelf.

      • What’s the Yunupingu flavour one like. I have No idea what Yuzu is.

        • +1

Yuzu is going to be huge when it gets to Australia. Tangy like a lemon but some sweetness like mandarin. Have no idea why Australian companies aren't using it now that Japanese-Cuisine is so popular here. Really delicious.

          • +1

@Dentshop: I meant Yuzu as I saw it in Coles today.
No idea why my comment has the other word, bloody IOS!

            • @PVA: Thanks for the tip - must try it. Might go well with summer salads

      • Yes it’s so good!

      • Adds a subtle spiciness. I like it, but prefer the Wasabi or original.

    • didn't know there was a wasabi variant, I have always just mixed wasabi in with plain old Kewpie Mayo

      • +2

Mixing it yourself is better - I find the prepared one lacking in wasabi kick.

Just had a squirt from Kewpie Wasabi bottle in fridge - needs more Wasabi😊

        • +1

Then I am not missing anything, I really like an extra kick in mine so plenty of wasabi goes in. :-)

          • +1

            @gromit: From Woolies ingredients:
Egg Yolk 5.4% down from 9.5%!
            Wasabi Oil 1%
            Horseradish 0.6%

Add your own wasabi & enjoy almost twice the tasty smooth egg yolks of the Original! And the extra Wasabi kick of course.

The magic ingredient for home made sushi .

  • Made in Thailand?

    • Yes.

    • Yep, Thailand.

Doesn't compare to the stuff that's made in Japan which is heaps better.

  • +2

Not a bad price if you use it sparingly, but keep in mind it's not hard to find it for $7 - 8 for a 1kg bottle in most asian grocery stores.

    • +7

Except the nozzle on the 1kg bottle sucks :(

    • That bottle is too big and the nozzle is no good.

  • +7

Your description is of the higher egg yolk content Japanese made product. https://www.kewpieshop.com/products/kewpie-mayonnaise-asian

That is a different tasting product to this!
Woolworths list "Kewpie Japanese Mayonnaise" as Product of Thailand, with Egg Yolk (9.5%).

    Discussed in previous Deals.

    • +2

      Proper research. Up vote!

    • Interesting even the Japanese one says "made only with egg yolks" but then lists ingredients with veg oil as the primary ingredient, MSG etc:
VEGETABLE OIL (CANOLA OIL, SOYBEAN OIL), EGG YOLK, VINEGAR, SALT, MONOSODIUM GLUTAMATE, SPICE, NATURAL FLAVOR

      • +1

        "Made only with egg yolks"…
Rather than with whole eggs, like other egg mayo.

Made with egg yolk gives a more yellow creamy mayo. That's what makes Kewpie different to other egg mayo.

    • +2

      Thant's right.
Mayonnaise contains more than 10% egg yolk prohibited to import except import carry on by yourself.
Max 1kg per person allowed to import when you go to Japan and buy them.

      • Yes, discussed in other Kewpie Deals. Explains the 9.5% in this.

1kg😢 Was wondering about bringing some back - when flights resume.
Looks like I'll just eat it as a special treat in Japan, as usual.

      • +1

        Thant's right

        Is that a UN resolution?

  • I eat this on everything.

  • Best Mayo Ive ever tasted.

    • +1

Japanese version is tastier than this.

      • i agree!!

        Made in Japan is tastier

  • secret sauce!

The msg in this makes everything tastes so much better!

  • My local Woolies always has 1L variant for $9.50 everyday price. Better value than this Coles one.

    • Woolies lists similar looking Ssk Japanese Mayo 1kg @$9.50. Sure it's Kewpie? May only be at some Woolies.
Coles have sold the 1kg Kewpie at that price.

      My local stocks this 300g @$4.70 & 500g @$7.

These 300g were on special @Woolies & Aldi for $3 in January. That made them almost the same price @$10/kg & much more convenient than 1kg. Stocked up then, buying the 3 flavours.

Asian grocery stores can be cheaper for 1kg.

Perfect on Okonomiyaki "Japanese savory pancake". Many different recipes around Japan but Hiroshima was the best I thought.

    • Kansai region (the kitchen of Japan) & Hiroshima have different styles of Okonomiyaki.

Hiroshima style is prepared as a stack of ingredients, whereas in Osaka - it's all mixed together.

I like the informality of the Kansai Okonomiyaki. It's the form found outside of Hiroshima.

      Love Okonomiyaki

      • Go easy on the okonomi sauce and no katsuboshi thanks.

The look on the girl's face is always of shocked disbelief upon hearing that request…

        • You heretic😂
          Those are the best bits!!

    • +3

I will always cherish sitting inside a small hole in the wall okonomiyaki place, cold beer in the hand, smoke bellowing through the air from the locals and the okonomiyaki grill, all whilst it was freezing cold outside, there's really nothing better! I can make a similar tasting okonomiyaki, but damn that atmosphere is unmatchable

      • +1

Yes - the atmosphere is wonderful. The Japanese know how to enjoy themselves.

Passed a tiny packed Yakitory bar in Nagasaki. I was a little hesitant to go in because I thought locals might not appreciate a stranger. Instead, I was welcomed.
It wasn't my first Yakitory bar, so I thought I would have a bit of fun - as they didn't expect me to know how to order. So I played along.

After a lot of laughs, had a wonderful time & shared a lot of food from others plates. The owner only charged for my first 700¥ dish of Tako (octopus), but not for all the whiskey! He was pretty drunk too. Staggered out the door. My new friends didn't want me to go. A memorable experience, like many in Japan.

        Just enjoyed a 500ml can of Asahi🍺

  • Every time I see these I always feel that the baby looks creepy

    • It's not a baby, it's a Kewpie Doll originally manufactured 100 years ago! Hence the brand name.

  • +1

MSG bomb. $7.99 for 1kg at most Asian grocery stores.

  • -1

Interesting that a product can have MSG but not be considered to have artificial flavours. Must always check the labels!

  • Where can you get the Japanese made one?

    • Japan, & other countries that allow importation of mayo with over 10% egg yolk (unlike here)
      Or make your own

      • OK thanks.

I wonder what the rationale is to ban mayo with over 10% egg yolk?

Also what the egg yolk content of Japanese Kewpie. I can't seem to find this out online.

        • Discussed in a few Kewpie Deals & above.

Comment said it is 15% egg yolk. This one is 9.5% - to avoid the ban on 10+% imports. Other flavours have less!

Health rules here would likely be the reason for ban on high egg yolk products.

  • What’s the best food to put this on? I don’t normally cook a lot of Japanese deep fried chicken unfortunately.

    • anything where you use mayo, or even butter. sandwiches,… avo and mayo, vegemite and mayo,…

    • Tuna sandwich or make some Japanese potato salad or egg salad.
