Need Tips for Surviving a Course Where The Trainer Is an Idiot

Hey OzB

Yes im doing one of those super duper free tafe VIC courses.
Unfortunately the only trainer who could be found has absolutely no experience in the industry or in education.

He literally googles the topics and rambles on about them during class time, it is quite abit non stop hot air and firmly patting of ones own back.
Have talked to the school directly and gotten the usual run around.

Asking questions that he should be able to answer but cant got old real fast, any advice?

self learn ahead of time and teach the class yourself

    free

    Don't go?

  • +4

Convince the class to all give negative feedback to the school about him. With enough mounting pressure, hopefully things will change.

Lets say all the capable ones have already withdrawn

so since u are still there does it mean u are。….in…

@[Deactivated]: Don't go to the course?

            • @brendanm: Ive been known to 'wander off', and my focus still has to be mostly on the course

  • +1

    any advice?

Do what he does… Learn online or move on to something else. Leave some feedback if you wish.

    • Done both, its just having your time wasted to this level is tough on the mental state

      • No offence but you sound into self gratification when you say things like that…

        • The course is the equivalent of going to mcdonalds, ordering and paying for a cheeseburger, then being told you have to go around back and make it yourself.

          • @[Deactivated]: Is it though? I find you analogy unrelateable to your situation.

It's more like you went to McDonald's, expected a 2 star michlean chefs burger then started stomping your feet demanding they get a better chef and ingredients…

"Burger king is peasants doing what's peasants do, taking a cheap cut of meat and giving it a little class"

You get what you pay for?

Nice. So if he gives the instructor money it will improve!

  • Maybe his way is teaching is so good it sounds simple for trolls.

I’d be interested to know which of the courses you are doing. Most are at Cert 3 or 4 level, so they are entry level courses, and most have limited pre-requisites. Perhaps you are overqualified? They are supposed to address Skills shortages in particular industries - so that you go in at entry level, to gain entry level qualification and then hopefully progress. • he should be able to answer but (profanity) got old real fast

Does he suffer from an aging disease like progeria? Even if he does, there's no reason to be calling him that.

  • isn't this 99% of uni lecturers too.

    • I thought uni lectures were all 40 minutes of trying to relate the topic to the professors pet project followed by 5 minutes on SCRAM Jets.

Where The Trainer Is an Idiot

He has a job, you don’t. Sounds like there's at least one thing you could learn from him.

I just finished my assessments for a diploma that I regret doing. It was dry af and I'm not entirely sure what I've learned. My tip is to just put your head down and just do it. I'm gonna work at Nike with this useless diploma I reakon. I can tell you, I am soooo glad I'm done with this thing, you will be too when you finish. The good news is you didn't pay for your course. I did though, haha jokes on me.

It'll be worth it in the long run, even if it just adds an extra line to your resume.

  • If you want to stir some shit up, make sure you have records of all the formal written complaints you've made.
If you haven't already, ask to see their grievance procedure. They're legally required to have one as a training organisation.
Go through these proper channels first and record their responses and if you feel you haven't had your grievances addressed be very clear about why, then allow them to respond

THEN contact the ombudsman. If you try in good faith to resolve an issue through the proper channels and fail they can then step in. Frankly it might be overkill for a free tafe course but it's your call.

  • I did a childcare course in sydney. It was a dogs breakfast. I made a stand and insisted on learner guides. I got nowhere. I feel sorry for the people who paid a lot of money including international students

    • Are you doing childcare now pam?

      • no i wasted enough time on that course

  • Like most 'education', shut your mouth, parrot back the answers when asked and get your bit of paper at the end.

  • TAFE would have a formal complaints process - which is probably filling out a form as opposed to just talking to someone in administration.
A formal complaint would force them to deal with the issue - internally its handled much differently.
ASQA is the regulator for vocational training, they also have a complaints process: https://www.asqa.gov.au/students/complaints-about-providers

  • If OP is not learning anything, I could understand the grievance.
But as OP appears to be just bored, they should just stick it out and get the Cert at the end of the course.

BTW, I've been on courses with people with a similar perception of the course/tutor, and they didn't do so well at the end due to lack of understanding.
