$179 for 1TB not bad either

I literally bought a 1TB Samsung QVO 2.5 internal SSD for $159 from Centre com yesterday to rescue my 8 year old laptop as the boot time was so slow 5+ mins. They offer free shipping but don't want to wait 5 days or so and end up going to the store. Now boot up time is under 1 min.

      • Cheers for the heads up. Bought one myself. Better deal than the MX500.

      • Also had one arrive today, for a machine I'm putting together for my parents. Should be good because explaining to my mum the difference between drives and how much they store is a nightmare and only have a 120gb one on hand as an OS drive.

Will pick up a couple of TB external whenever they start to run out, but for now this is plenty.

      • +1

Qvo uses cheap nabd, compare with evo

    • The Samsung 860 Qvo 2.5" SATA 1TB is $177 and apparently 7% faster.

Any reason to get the 1tb MX500 over the Samsung?

      • +1

MX500 is TLC, costs more. So if price difference is only $2, I'd get the MX500.

      • -1

I would only use 860 Qvo as a storage drive due to its small SLC 42GB cache. There is a massive drop-off in performance once that cache fills up, from 520MB/s to 80MB/s

        • +1

Thanks all, ended up getting the Samsung. Was $20 cheaper and pretty much the same performance. Not too worried about the slower write performance.

      • The QVO is just fine. The SLC/TLC/BS-LC mob made me spend extra on expensive Samsung and Crucial drives that I found perform exactly the same as my el-cheapo 10-year-old Transcend SSD. In fact, a folder with 500k porn jpgs take the same time to load on a 5400rpm HDD as it does on the next-generation super-high-performance dark-matter-made pro Samsung and Crucial SSDs.

  • Hmmmm yeah not a bad price but I would've liked it to be in the $80s like it often was.

    • +6

Would be nice but in this current climate - $95 is best I can find!

      • +1

Agreed prices are crazy atm, $76 was the normal "deal price" in Sep/Oct but now a deal is anything less than $100.
And while ~$140 was a good price for 1TB now it's more like ~$180 or so

    Thanks guys bought 1

  • Can this be used on a MacBook pro 13 inch 2015 model?

    • +2

no, macbook requires a proprietary connector M.2 style drive. you can buy connectors for an M.2 drive but i've heard they aren't super reliable. i got mine on a sale from here not long ago, for a good result: https://www.macfixit.com.au/owc-ssd-drives/macbook-pro/retin…

make sure to check your model number (e.g. A1502) and compatibility on that website if you go for that option

someone else might chime in with a bit more expert knowledge, but there you go

  • Damn I pulled the trigger on the EVO 500gb from Shopping Express last week, $122 including delivery..

  • +1

Thanks mate, very useful right now. Prices suck at the moment.

  • I have one of these and it's starting to fail with constant issues starting up. Not sure if I recommend it.

    • +1

Thats why you paid extra for the 5 year warranty.

    • +6

This, like any SSD or piece of hardware is susceptible to issues/failure. The MX500 has a 5 year warranty, and to my knowledge only launched Q4 2017, so should still be within warranty if you wanted to make a claim and get a replacement that isn't faulty - plenty of time left.

My work has put over 800 of the MX500 SSDs (250GB, 500GB, 1TB, 2TB) in PCs to date, and I'm not going to sit here and tell you none of them are faulty, but the numbers are low so far… in line with Samsung, for a lower price point. Isn't that what OzBargain is all about? =]

Still waiting for the 2TB SSD drives to hit that sweet price point.

  • aww… missed out!

  • I got a similar model from this manufacturer in 2014, been using it everyday and still going strong. The performance is not outstanding but so is the price. Great buy if you are looking for a budget SSD.

  • Thanks OP.

We're back in business! 8:50AM (AEST)

    • Cancelled the $109 and reorder at $95. Thanks.

missed the previous one.. got one today! thanks

  • I absolutely love the Lexar 1tb ssd, $140, never used one before at first it felt like a gimmick, but the system feels snappy, it makes me feel like 4k must be real, rather a gimmick.

    Given I'm still on 1080p.

This deals not at bad, if all you're going to do is use it for the operating system, you can use the HDD for game installations.

I got 1tb for mostly programs like Photoshop, blender, ect because they take a huge portion of priority.

  • Thanks, OP.
    Missed last one, just ordered.
Hopefully, it will work with my old Lenovo Ideapad 320:)

  • +1

Back in stock again @ $95!

    Get 'em while they're hot

  • I wanted the Samsung 860 EVO, but this fits the price point. Good enough.

  • Is MX500 a good OS drive?
Is it also ok for video editing cache drive?

Currently have Transcend 256GB ssd for OS that's running out of space.
