Do you know if Dan would beat in QLD where Aldi doesn't sell alchohol?
EDIT: Nevermind this was answered as I was asking.Yep, it's not bad. I do like the 18yr better (might have bee a different brand).
I adore the Glen Marnoch with a splash of soda water. Magnificent.
Oh wait, the one I'm a fan of is the Sherry cask version, not the $99 one.
lol at the down vote though
Yes, not worth it, in my opinion. There was nothing spectacular about it, and the fact that it was 25 years old set expectations higher, which, led to a bit of disappointment. I'm glad I tried it, but I but I'd rather spend 100 dollars on something else.
Dan Murphy is matched for Laphroaig 10 Year Old

But Highland Park 10YO seems good price. anyone recommended?
Love all the highland park flavours, always tends to be out of my price range but this is a definite dip in my favour. Will have to double check Dan's.
I'm with you, it's a beautiful, non-smokey, malt
Highland Park is definitely a good wee dram.
When I toured the Highlands with a small local tour company, we all cbipped in to buy our guide (a strapping Aberdeen lass) a bottle of scotch at the end.
So we secretly asked the other tour guide what would be good to get her. Keeping in mind we had basically ALL of the scotches available, he said Highland Park. She was happy.
I did a tour of the distillery in Scotland a couple of years ago. Not a bad drop and double this price buying direct from the distillery (might have been 12yr old). They smoke their grains with peat, but it's mild in comparison to Laphroaig. I Personally prefer the non peat whiskeys such as Aberlour, but for $60 put it in your collection (wish Aldi sold scotch in SA).
Very much agree. I like the Highland Park 12yo (and Aberlour A'Bunadh). A touch of peaty smoke on the Highland Park - but nothing too dominating. Lovely. I've enjoyed the other Highland Park varieties that I've had. The 12yo appeals because of the balance between youthful characteristics and the mellowing that age imparts. I'd happily buy the 10yo at this price.
Hate the bottle design. Bletch!
OTOH Laphroaig 10 Year Old is poison to me - gave away the remaining 75% of the bottle I had to an OzB member with more asbestos lining in their esophagus… Interesting - but too mono dimensional for me.
Dan's has the Laphroaig for $79.95 currently as an online offer. Not sure how long it will go for.
Edit. Beaten.
Anyone else seeing $95.90 at Dan's?
That's in NSW
Which one will you guys recommend for someone who normally just drink red wine and wants to try whisky?
And how to drink it - straight, on the rocks or mix with a bit of water? Not Laphroig lol. Have it neat, this is the way. (For single malts anyway)
Laphroig is very very peaty, out of all the Islay single malts, ie peaty ones, Ardbeg is way smoother on the peatyness.
I love Laphroaig but wouldn't recommend it for someone wanting to try whisky for the first time. If I were you, (when this circus is over) I would visit a whisky tasting show or check out which of your local Dan's have tasting evenings to try find which ones you like. If you want to jump straight in you could start with a 12YO Glenfiddich, Bowmore or 10YO Talisker.
Try it neat. Add some ice to see how you like that. Maybe keep a glass of dry on the side just to break it up between sips/drinks.
Enjoy.I think Laphroaig is almost medicinal, so even for peaty whisky is a bit much.
Having said that, some people just prefer peat, so maybe try some lagavulin 16 next time you're out of lockdown and see if it's your thing.I drink plenty of red wine and I like complexity. Whisky is very different - but Highland Park has good balance and complexity. I also rather enjoy Johnny Walker 'Green' - People scoff (it's a blend of 4 individual 'single malts'), but it just works for me. Look for the occasional special closer to the $60 mark though.
And avoid Laphroaig 10 Year Old. Tastebud killer.
Someone suggested Talisker 10yo here above. That's nice too. A bit more adventurous - but worthwhile. As also suggested, try it neat and then see what a small splash of water does to it.
If you new to whiskey I would say start with lighter fruity whiskey like Glenfiddich or Glenlivet. Once you enjoy the flavours and are more interested a in a scotch whiskey move onto the next level flavours like bowmore, lagavulin, ardbeg and laphroiag (in this order). The way I would describe it would be like drinking cab sav at the start and then trying dry shiraz, very rarely ppl go straight to shiraz at least from what I've known lol some ppl even do the lighter red and whites first before getting to shiraz.
In terms of how you drink it, dont let anyone tell you any different, there is no right or wrong way to drink a whiskey! Neat, with rocks, with single rock or a bit of water or even a bit water with a rock are way to try it. Trying different way to drink actually changes the whiskey too but at the end of the day its all about your own preference and experience. Do whiskey flights when you see them, good fun and very informative. Enjoy the whiskey journey its a long and fun one :Dthanks for all the input - I wish they still have the tasting night thing so I can just try a few to see which one I like.
Funny enough I went from white wine to Shiraz, skipping cabsav, and I still prefer Shiraz to cabsav until now.
Start out with Glenmorangie 10, this is a nice light, palatable whiskey that's pretty tasty. Then branch out from there.
I drink straight or on the rocks, but whatever works for you!
Oh nice.
I was nearly out of Laphroaig. It's my favourite winter drink
I always keep one on hand. It's definitely a staple.
I'd rather go the Quarter Cast from Nicks for $85. They also have the 10YO for the same price as Aldi and you don't need to wait 7 days.
https://www.nicks.com.au/laphroaig-quarter-cask-single-malt-…
Yeah I prefer the quarter cast too but I wasn't sure what the price was like
Thanks
Quarter cask also $85 at dans. Is quarter cask better than 10YO?
I find the 10yo rough and mono-dimensional. Quarter cask is decidedly better - the peat doesn't overpower the rest.
Weirdo QLD~~~no alchol in ALDI at al
Already that price at Nicks
Dan reduced the price as well
cheers…surely Dan will beat!
anyone tried the Glen Marnoch 25yr ($99)?
