Inevitable Conversation - Would You Buy an Xbox One X Now Given Next Gen Is 6 Months Away?

Been consolidating (i.e selling of) old console stuff. Had a One S i enjoyed BLOPS4 and some retro gaming on but long boot/loads annoyed me, and once xbox live sub ran out I didn't play it as much.

Was wondering if the One X is a good idea now considering the Series X is likely to be twice as expensive on launch.

Does the One X suffer from (lets say, Minecraft Chunk rendering delays etc.) or long boot/load times as the One S did? If so, I might just skip it until the Series X drops down after a few months or more.

What kind of life/resale value do you think the One X has if bought now, in a year or so.

If the Series X has full backwards compatibility you can expect the resale value to plummet of any earlier models

    • Good point. I had great fun loading Xbox GTA San Andreas and finding it 'upgraded' it's textures, still blocky as hell but fun to play!

Wouldn’t touch one x with a pole. New machine is based on RDNA2 and is going to be light years ahead.

    Wouldn't buy a console period ;P.

Yeah I think it'll depend on backwards compatibility. I bought a ps4 on launch day, and remember not having anything particularly worth playing for at least a year, even two years. So will likely wait, and even by the time something good came out, I think the best game was the remaster of the last of us lol.

  • did you have an ssd with the last xbox? Might want to try out an ssd xbox one s unless you need 4k. I think there is good prices for used xbox with a place like Cash converters. They will have a 90 day warranty and ACL as well

  • Next-gen is at least 6 months away. Will you get 6 months worth of use out of a current console? Then grab one now and enjoy. I'd recommend get a PS4 Pro and play some of the exclusive titles you've missed out on so far.

  • I never jump on a new M$ console at its entry into the market (anymore). Got burned by a launch 360 failing from day 1.
Always wait till the masses overpay and the millions of bug testers have found out the major flaws in the system.
Wait until there is an unmissable exclusive on the next-gen.
Jumping to the current console immediately means you're playing catchup waiting for the new games to be released as there's very little content for the system.
Games will still be released for last-gen at the same time for a year or 2.

    Just buy a current-gen S, X, or even a PS4 and enjoy the games.
Then trade it in for the 2020/21 models of Xbox or PS ;)

  • All good points. I've not played the one s much over the last few months so I could forgo launch days (although with I'd bought a one x with the extra controller for $349 from Microsoft last month!)

I'll hold off for the time being unless a steal of a deal comes along which takes the sting out of trading up!

  • Not new, but starting to see some used for under $300, which is pretty good and worthwhile

  • I agree with Crownie, and the decision should come down to price. On day 1, the games will probably be no better, and if the One X sells for (say) $250 vs $600 for the Series X, you could play the cheaper console now, and by the time you need to upgrade (because the games are actually better), the new one will have come down by 20 or 30%.

  • i just watched ray traced minecraft on the series x demo, looked amazing but the nvme is the thing, instant loading and boot up, although WHY a proprietary expansion system (well, profit, obviously!) but a standard NVME port would have meant increasingly cheap storage expansion!

    • $200-$300 for Xbox One X or $700-$800 for Series X at end of the year.

You could always put the price difference into upgrading a PC GPU but if you've already got a 2070 or 2080 on PC, then well done.

Just load up on Xbox Live Gold for 3 years and sign up to Ultimate for $1 to convert that and have PC access to Minecraft as Minecraft will always be on Game Pass for PC since it's a 1st party MS game.

  • I had the same issue with PS4. The new PS5 comes out at the end of the year (most likely) but I still had a massive backlog of games I wanted to play. I decided to fork out another $200 to buy a used Ps4 (old one broke). Has really paid off so far, especially in lieu of the lock downs. I've already clocked hundreds of hours of game play.

I don't think the Ps5 will now offer enough of a reason to upgrade straight away at launch. I'm not interested in the slightest by better graphics or more RAM.

  • I know I'm late to the party but I wouldn't bother to be honest. XSX is meant to be fully backwards compatible with all previous Xbox generations so you're better off holding out for that unless you're not interested in next-gen gaming right away.

IMO a used Xbox One X is probably worth about $300 used right now (Amazon AU currently have it for $440 brand new, it's a special). It'll definitely plummet in price once more people have a XSX and try to unload their old consoles.

    • My local shop has a one s 1tb for $229, but after reading the backwards compatibility, I'll just let breath of the wild distract me until launch day!
