Yeah I would avoid wd red 6tb and under if you plan to put them in a raid as they’re SMR drives.
1TB is ok but the others under 6TB aren't

What date did this start/how do you actually check?
I've got 4x4TB Reds from late 2017/early 18 that I've had running for some time.
@Matt86: I've only seen the currently shipping drives list
https://www.extremetech.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/Weste…
@Matt86: 4TB Red with EFAX model number are SMR.
4TB Red with EFRX model number are CMR.
@Twix: Phew!!!!
The two I bought last year for my NAS are WD40EFRX.
Although I definitely didn't my Red Pros.
@Matt86: There isn't check out yet. You can keep a eye on Smartmottools thread regarding it.

Many ozbargain users actually say that SMR is BETTER though.
i dont think so. they are just cheaper and many feel their backup is not important so smr is okay for them.
everyone different.
@CyberMurning: Yea, maybe. The WD red thing is a bit of a scandal though.
thanks for the heads up, I was just about the pull the trigger
And if I remember correctly it was trying to add the drive to a DS918+ that made this apparent.
Skid Mark/Stingy Manufacturer Recording
came here to say this
Would be a good starter deal if not for the probability of an SMR. If only it came with an ironwolf instead. Even then, 6TB our over preferred for the better URE.
Just a warning - new models announced (and then removed). Check my post on the forums
any Synology guru overhere? i have issue with getting smtp server setup for my scanner.
thank you in advance.

Too small for me. I need Synology 5-bay and 8TB WD RED.
Here I am wanting to upgrade my 5 bay for a FreeNAS Mini XL+.
I wish I could afford that, the FreeNAS hardware looks really good.
That's the only thing stopping me too :P
Where can you buy one of those?
I shucked 2 4TB drives for my Synology DS218+, bunged them both in gave me a total of 4TB storage… still don't really know what I am doing with mine. But love it for Plex!
you done raid 1, ie 1:1 mirror thats why you end up with just 4tb not 8tb
I don't bother with RAID for Plex on my DS918. I just have a big external backup and if it goes to shit, so be it. Atleast I have more storage. Seems really silly to me unless it's really crucial stuff for work or the like.
How do you do not RAID then?
@cc23: during initial setup you can choose all of this.
the non raid would be jbod. just bunch of disk.
wait i didn't make up that term.
JBOD (just a bunch of disks,or just a bunch of drives) is a derogatory term - the official term is "spanning" - used to refer to a computer's hard disks that haven't been configured according to the RAID (redundant array of independent disks) system to increase fault tolerance and improve data access performance.
@CyberMurning: Thanks I’ll try this.
Arrg, the conflict between 'want' and 'need' hurts us…
You can use NAS for:
1. backup (with cloud replication to AWS S3 bucket)
2. install plex with docker for your home media
3. storage of files
4. use it for hosting your virtual machine disk
5. install Kodi in docker container to skip ads
Is there anything else that anyone can think of?
btw a couple weeks ago there was a deal for DS918+ for $666 but its already expired :( -> https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/532673
i might wait for a better deal than this
FYI all they just announced the refreshed devices. So wait a bit and these will drop in price. The new ones only have a 15% increase on performance.
Here is a link to the new device.

Has similar specs to the Asustor AS6404T but the Asustor wins a bit. Some people prefer the different OS's I guess?
Comparison roundup here: https://nascompares.com/answer/asustor-as6404t-vs-qnap-ts-45…
Just a warning, the bundled drive uses SMR, which are not appropriate for RAID arrays despite WD's marketing.
