D-Link Viper 2600 Modem DSL-3900 $219 + $8 Delivery (Free C&C) & More @ The Good Guys Commercial (Membership Required)

170

I have been looking for Modem routers with some extra features for the right price, saw on Ozbargin - https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/529650.
Checked their website to find that most of the modems/routers are way cheaper then other stores.

I have done quick spread sheet and compared a few of the products note the delivery may vary but free pickup.
If someone would like a full listing of what's available I would be happy to screenshot and upload but copy paste was taking to long.

Note I am working on a better list right now google sheets for anyone https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1YhLdefUwTaXXSMVFUOPa…

    link not working…

Are you logged in? Updated link to the home page and put the link to the router in the description.

Any good Wi-Fi extenders in there?

    • +2

Updated the spread sheet with some of them there are more.

      • Thanks.
That netgear nighthawk price is so tempting. Not running a mesh network tho.
How does one get a goodguys commercial account?

      • Hey mate, thanks for the list. Do they have Netgear AX6000 AX8/8-Stream WiFi Router as well?

    • Good and wifi extenders don't go together in the same sentence. Get a router that can do a mesh network even if it's a budget Tenda or TP-Link.

Unless it is FTTN, otherwise don't bother with a "modem".

FTTC, FTTP, HCF provides a node (modem) with one Ethernet port. Many other options in the market - e.g. Asus AC67U.

    Only FTTN requires a "modem"…

The tech that came to instal FTTC was shocked that I was able to plug my PC directly into the node(modem) with working internet without a "modem"(router) provided by ISP.

    • +4

You realise the security implications of that, right? You've just plopped your box right on the internet with only Windows Firewall to save you..

      • -1

        PC ≠ Windows

It is recommended to directly connect a PC configured as a firewall (running pfSense, for example) to the nbn modem for best security. Anything but an Ethernet cable between the two presents a massive security hole.

        • +3

Sure, but he said PC, so we can generally rule out Mac because they'll tell you, and the odds of it being Linux desktop are very low…

          • -2

@ryang: A firewall appliance is neither Windows, Mac or Linux desktop, so I am uncertain what you are trying to say.

            • +1

@alvian: Would you ever refer to a "firewall appliance" as a PC, in the statement made by the user above? No. You'd call it the router.

              Let's keep some context.

              • -1

@ryang: My firewall looks like a PC because it was a PC. You can call it a firewall or a PC or that strange box that sits in the comms cabinet without kb & display, but I've never once referred to it as my router, funnily enough, because there are other boxes that do routing.

                • +1

@alvian: it was for testing to ensure my NBN works… no need to read too much into it.

and generally PC refers to non Mac as understood by many.

Further note on security… a couple of options available. hardware (router) + software + VPN should suffice home use (or overkill). These days, many routers route traffic to "cloud" based firewall/anti virus… pretty secure - privacy is probably a bigger concern.

Chill… TGIF. My initial comment was a rant on ISPs using the term "modem" and confused the fk out of people… (I was one of those, even though used similar technology/infrastructure overseas for internet connection).

FTTC, FTTP and HFC requires an NTD or NCD. It's not called a node. A node is outside and completely different.

FTTB requires a VDSL2 modem like FTTN does.

      • +1

Thanks for correction. They call it the "connection box."

        • Yeah NBN connection box is another name used.

NTD stands for network termination device and is used on FTTP and HFC.

NCD stands for network connection device and is used on FTTC.

  • I got Orbi RBK50 from wireless1 for $499, didn't even open it, My RT-5300 still going very strong. Updated with Asus Merlin, even better

  • Yeah I bought the Orbi RBK50 from GGC for $400. Very happy with the performance.
I know it has been cheaper before given the current climate of shortages with electronics this is the best price and will be for a while longer.

  • Provided the router supports VLAN Tagging you will be able to connect to all but FTTN as previously mentioned.
Most have this feature but make sure to check.

  • The dlink 2600 is awesome, though i had to exchange it recently add it wasn't connecting with our iinet nbn . The replacement did the same. Turns out iinet had changed their vlan settings recently, which caused the issue.

  • For the ORBI systems.. do i need a modem still to connect to NBN? I've read mixed things

    • What kind of NBN? FTTN, FTTB, FTTC, FTTP or HFC?

Do you use a home phone?

Sorry noob here. How does one get a login for this commercial site? TIA

    • +2

You need a membership, usually through your place of work or union, possibly students can through their student union.
I have a membership through our health care union HACSU, so I had to activate my Good Guys Commercial account with my HACSU login details.

      • Thanks for explaining. Here I was thinking that's it's akin to Costco 😭

    • You could also sign up to the g'day rewards membership as part of the discovery park membership program which is open to all and might be useful if you do camping/retreats etc. https://www.discoveryholidayparks.com.au. I believe the membership is $50 for 2 years (i got mine last year). Once you get g'day membership you then need to fill a online form and link your account with good guys commercial which takes about 3-5 working days -> https://www.gdayrewards.com.au/partners/g-day-rewards-partne…

  • Netgear Orbi RBS20 is not a router by itself and a Netgear Orbi RBR20 needs to be purchased to complete the setup.

Put these in the Google spreadsheet please and thank you.

Netgear Orbi RBK23, Netgear Orbi RBK50, Google Nest Wifi - Base Unit & Google Nest Wifi 2-pk (Base Point Unit).

    • +1

Added some additional notes, and all Orbi listings.

  • +2

Guys, the issue with the GGC at the moment is that the Orbi RBK20 or RBK23 or Nest wifi 2 pack are all on backorder and not expected to be in stock until mid-May 2020 at the earliest.

I found out after ordering, but am happy to wait given the difference in price when compared against other stores.

    • So you mean they'll let you order even though no stock? I got an Orbi RBK20 2 weeks ago and received it.

      • Yep you were lucky, they told me they've got 0 stock so delivery will be once the new shipment arrives.

I checked over a week ago and should have purchased them because there was definitely stock at one of my local stores.

        • +1

really? i placed a order yesterday for the RBK23 and got an email saying that it has been shipped and got the auspost tracking number also showing on the app. its coming from The Good Guys SHEPPARTON.

          • @ridical: Are you for real wtf!
Are you in Victoria? Maybe the orders go to your local Good Guys store?

  • Every time I see a TGG Commercial post I keep thinking I should sign up for work.

Any tips as to how to actually do this? There’s nothing on the website that provides a signup link or contact info to ask…
