Great price considering this is unlocked.

If your local OW doesn't have stock the Coles deal has been extended for another week.

  • +1

Good price for unlocked. I bought the Coles phone last week and unlocked it with no hassles. A great little unit for the price.

    • How's the gps on yours?

      • +1

        seems fine

      • +3

I can confirm that GPS is fixed after the latest update in March. I have got the Vodafone version for the last 2 and a half months or so.

        • I am using the Vodafone version and GPS is still not logging onto satellites after the March update

          • @he88388: Maybe they are using different suppliers for their GPS hardware as too many variations.

I also have had the Vodafone version that worked well from day one last year.

          • @he88388: Try turning off the vowofi switch when using the GPS. Also calibrate sensors with GPS status and fix app.

          • @he88388: I had the same issue prior to the update. Did you restart your phone recently?I had Telstra/boost card at the time, since the update I have tested on Vodafone and Optus and it has been working fine, I also tested my brother's boat card and it has been working well on telstra. There was a theory about searching for Vodafone servers in relation to getting a GPS fix, but I think that's not 100% right.

          • @he88388: GPS units technically do not log onto satellites. The GPS signal would be transmit only from the satellite.
There would be a denial of services if they would logging on, those poor satellites from decades ago could not handle it.

            • +1

@fredk1000: Agreed, the term we are looking for here is "locking onto satellites"

  • Jb price match?

  • -3

I feel every time this gets posted there should be a big warning about the GPS issues people have reported. Pretty terrible Samsung keep selling this without fixing it.

    • Some people report theirs works fine too.

      • -1

Oh cool, so it’s a device where all of its basic features might work. Good work Samsung.

        • +4

Lucky we are covered under Aus consumer law if it's faulty. I consider this a major issue with the phone so you would be within your rights for a full refund.

        • Or it is just user error. or a bad software that somebody have installed.
When reading people who have issues, they never did day1 full wipe and tested if they still had the issue.

          • @lplau: Fun fact, you shouldn’t have to. It should “just work”.

    • +4

It might sell better these days if it was the BlueTooth that was gammy.

    • what’s the worst it can happen with a dodgy GPS?

    • After the match update GPS is working great. Very quick to lockon and compass directions are working well too. Update came in March but it probably a February patch

    • +1

Never had a problem with the GPS, such a great phone. Should be voted no. 1 ozbargain tightass phone of the year.

  • +2

Good price for the unlocked version for those who don't want the hassle of trying to unlock separately.
I think A21 is going to be launched in coming days so it would be interesting to see the price of A20 dropping further to clear out the stock.

    • those who don't want the hassle

Agree, but the phone unlock process literally takes <5 minutes.

      • For an experienced person, who can be bothered.

        For everyone else, there's unlocked.

      • +1

        …..and around $5 too.

        • Yeah 5mins, once u get the confirmation email with the voucher code, which takes hours…

  • Does anyone have experience with this A20 falling on the floor, is it tough or it cracks easily like many Samsung I see around?

    • +74

Hang on, just dropping mine on the concrete floor now for you.

      • +6

You know what I mean, I dropped my shitty Alcatel many times and yes it’s a terrible phone but tough like old boots and does not crack. It lags like hell now and I’d like to replace it

      • +2

        Annnndddd…..

      • +2

Don't keep us in suspense any longer….did it survive?

        • +67

He can't reply because his phone has broke.

    • +2

easy to crack, it's a large screen. expensive to replace a AMOLED display. It however is a nice phone if you look after it.

      • +4

        like a blonde

        • +1

Your blonde has a large AMOLED display?

          • @Gaz1: That's how he normally views women. It's wipe clean too.

      • lol. isnt that the issue with all smart phones nowadays (including apple)?

    • +5

cracks reasonably easily. Invest in a rubber cornered case immediately.

    • +3

Mine did actually fall out of my bag yesterday onto the concrete. About 1.5 metre drop onto the corner. Slightly scuffed, screen works fine and no cracks in the glass. Not going to try again but happy it made it through.

    • +2

Drop(ed) mine quite frequently. Have a glass screen protector on - shattered, back is scratched up, dents on edges. Still works fine, pretty sure the actual screen is undamaged.

      • "FlipCrank" Would you not remove/replace the shattered glass screen protector

as soon as you picked it up to find out and ease of use?

        • When it becomes an extreme case of spiderwebing where it impedes the visual fidelity I'd do it. It's fairly contained to the edges - still good for a couple more drops. If I bought a new screen protector for time I dropped it I might exceed the cost of phone at some point.

          • @FlipCrank: Wow,…really? You drop your phone that often? Maybe get a grippy case and/or take more care lol.

Excactly for that reason ( in case I/you drop it on hard surface ) it's sensibleas well as cheap insurance to have a solid screen protector/case on.

            • @ozhunter68: Never had this problem with "normal sized" phones. The phone is too large, sides are not flat or wide enough and is generally quite slippery. Cases just exacerbate the size issue and its an added cost if you want something that would even provide decent drop protection. Most of these drops been it slipping out of my pocket.

    • +2

I had a massive fall on concrete floor at the MCG from probably about 1.5m. flat on the screen. My screen protector shattered but screen was intact luckily. I think partly because I had this soft case with lips around the side which cushioned some of the impact.

      • Yeah the lips don't lie. My moto has probably been saved by those lips when my wallet phone case fell open.

  • +1

I bought one of these as a gift a while back - i was seriously impressed at what you get for $179… it was quite responsive and screen was very decent.

  • +5

Thanks OP, I've had this phone for about 6 months now and have just bought another one for my wife. That will stop her complaining for a couple of hours :)

    • +2

      This is the way.

    • +1

She can just call you faster to complain now.

      • Working from home means she doesn't need to call me at all!

  • Does this come with generic AU firmware, or is it a Telstra variation?

    • +2

It's unlocked so it has nothing to do with Telstra.

      • Ah pardon me, I meant for the Coles deal sorry

        • +2

Generic au firmware on telstra one too
Only a couple telstra apps installed, which can be removed

  • Thinking of this for my father-in-law who needs an upgrade… does it come with a case and/or screen protector already applied?

    • Also curious about this? I very much doubt the screen protector part but do they include a case like a lot of the Xiaomi and Oppo devices

  • +1

Would this be a silly move from a s7 edge which is working fine?

    • +1

I was thinking the same, from my S7 but I think in someways it will be a step backwards..

      • +1

        1440p to 720p screen i just noticed…. damn

    • If you want android 10 it might be worthwhile.

      • I'm in the market for a more premium phone but was thinking this might scratch the itch for 12 months or so until the pixel 5 and s21 are out.

does it have one UI 2?

        • +2

Android 10 with One UI 2 has started rolling out to some countries, so hopefully soon in Australia.

    • +1

"SgtBatten" If your S7 edge still has decent battery performance and working well, then keep using that,…..

unless you want larger screen and/or longer lasting battery, as well as Android 9/( soon 10 )/One UI.

      • +1

Yeah i think i will. battery is not great but I cannot really use my phone at work so it's only getting drained when at home using it all day and i can charge any time.

  • My mum's phone is on the outs so this is a great deal, but I'm thinking it's probably too big for her. Does anyone have any suggestions for something with similar specs but in a smaller size?

    • +2

My mother is 80, 5'4 and loves her A20. It's not too big, especially for your mum's eyes.

      • +1

        Classic,….and true too.

      • +1

I'm glad your mum likes it, thanks for the feedback!

I'll try and sell her on it being an upgrade for her eyesight, but I think her main concern is she hardly has any space in her handbag since she's carry all dad's stuff too!

        • +1

It's all about the newer Screen to Body ratio for these current phones, so probably similar to her old phone.

    • +2

Grabbed one for my mum to replace her aging HTC One X9 which has a permanently blurry camera. Should be a nice little upgrade for her.

  • Does it support Google daydream? looking for good vr Phone for kids. Have Google daydream already.

  • +2

For people worried about GPS issue, I can confirm that has been taken care off in the latest software update that came in March.

I have the Vodafone version, unlocked, have tried Optus, Vodafone and Telstra networks in the last 2 and a half months and it has been working fine on all networks including GPS on all networks.

This phone is slow, coming from MIA2 and international version of Nokia 8.1 which was useless for Australian network bands. Reddit, YouTube, facebook and chrome will make you feel you are using something from 4-5 years back.

The camera is terrible, again comparing Nokia 8.1 with Google camera app.

For the price you cant find a phone which supports local bands, b28, NFC,decent screen and security of Samsung. Don't pay over 180 for sure, got mine for 149 + 5 bucks to unlock

  • does it have VOLTE & VO-WIFI ? nor sure if its too much to ask for his price point

    • +3

Yes it does, works on BOOST too

  • Does it support adoptable storage? That is, can you merge your SD Card with internal storage?

    • +1

      yep!

    • Didn't know Samsung ever allowing that? Recent?

  • Good for the price, but a 4GB of Ram is better for Android phone if you want a little future proofing no matter how cheap the handset is.

  • -6

Doesnt have NFC may want to adjust post. the a50 has nfc not the a20

    • +4

      Yes it does have NFC.

  • What's the camera and video quality like compared to the flagship models?

    • +2

"Shane34" I can understand you might want to compare to a current flagship, but a bit hard to do as it is weaker in

all areas. From a distance will look very similar, with case on will feel similar. I would even go as far to say from

a distance even the large 6.4" 2.5D Glass Amoled screen even looks similar. But when you start to use it you will

notice noticably slower performance, especiall multitasking or running heavier apps. Sound is weaker, camera weaker

and limited, no water proofing etc. On the plus side it has up to date software/more features than many, great battery

life, and ticks many other boxes for neeed features as well as 24 months AU local warranty.

Let's not forget it's only 4-10 times the amount of flagships too.

  • +1

This would be better than an iPhone 4S right?

    • The NFC alone is worth it.

      • What is NFC?

        • +3

          if you dont know it

          you dont need it
