Medjool Dates Half Price $9.99 Per Kg @ Coles

680

Fresh, tasty, sweet, loose, Medjool dates - the best dates. Grown in California. Now half price at Coles, just $9.99 per kg.

It looks like this time Coles is winning the cheap dates competition over Woolies. Medjool dates are usually $20 per kg, but are regularly discounted before Ramadan (Ramazan). Last week's best prices were $14 at Wooles and $12 at Coles.

Not sure if this half price discount is national (yet), but they got reduced at Hornsby NSW today.

Any deals on pre-packed? Not sure if I wanna take my chances on loose

    • If you get loose just leave them in the fridge for a day or two before you eat them and you'll be fine.

      • +1

I thought these virus survive longer in the fridge than outside - unless you freeze. The typical recommended in 3 days at room temp. We usually wash all the perishable with dish washing soap and water and then refrigerate them.

    • +1

Agree it is a bit of a concern, and the lids are usually left open and not all stores provide tongs either. Better wash them before eating.

      • tried washing and ended up with soggy date. no one likes a soggy date

    • +1

Not yet, pre-packed boxes are still $55 for 5kg box.

But when I'm picking them, in addition to using tongs I'm putting bags over my hands (to keep it clean for others) and don't eat them immediately (give some time for nasties to die). You can wash & dry them, put in the fridge for some time.

At this price I'll be tempted next time to ask Coles people at store to bring the new full box from the storage, and take the whole box (measured as loose dates, so cheaper).

    • You can use them in a cooked recipe like Date Slice or Protein Balls.

I wouldn't eat these loose. Not only are they exposed at the store but they are imported from USA/Mexico.

      • +2

        imported from USA/Mexico

What's wrong with it being imported from USA/Mexico?

        • Have you not seen rate Corona Virus stats?

          • @nightelves: Do you know what's not imported from abroad in Kmart, Target, Big W, Coles, Woolies, Aldi? Unfortunately, except a few products, all our shelves are filled with imported stuff and a lot of that must be from countries hit hard with the virus, particularly China. This will remain until we boost our domestic manufacturing in future (which we should).

I am not an expert, but I doubt if virus remains active for days on those items even if there was in the first place.

      • Aren't Protein balls raw?

      • @abc A loose date from Mexico? you sure you wouldn't eat them?

Not sure if I wanna take my chances on loose

So you've never had a loose date ???

  • +3

Covid Medjool. Not everyone uses the tongs.

    • +2

Tongs are too slow, I cover both my hands with vegie bags and use one hand to grab and transfer into the other hand bag hulk style.

      • -2

I like to have fun so use my mouth, bobbin-apples style ..

  • +4

My store in NSW still has them for $12 per kg so I doubt it's national.

  • +6

You guys love a cheap date huh.

    • +1

      I’m love em really cheap.

  • +4

Guess this is the only date I'll be having for awhile…

Half Price $9.99 Per Kg @ Coles

Got some the other day at Coles for $12, half price would be $6, not $9.99…

    • +1

half price would be $6, not $9.99

jv, the normal price is $18-20/kg.

      • -5

The price was $12, and then immediately after, got reduced to $10. That is not half price.

  • For some people, this is going to be the most dates they will ever have in their lifetime.

    • isn't there are limit of two per person?

      • Two Kg or two Boxes (5Kg each) per person?

  • I did see a young man put his hand in the box and take a "free sample" a few days ago. Pity it was left to me to say something even though the Coles staff member was right there!

  • +1

Unfortunately they changed their supplier, these dates are lower quality than last year.

Last year they used Natural Delights this yeah it's Natural Goodness which seem to be frozen and thawed here in Australia.

    • What? Really? That's a shame. In terms of tastes, what score would you give the two?

      • +1

The previous ones were juicier and fresher.

If you really care also, Natural Delights were GMO-free, checked the box on these and no labels as such.

Taste-wise, they're very similar, im just commenting that they don't appear as fresh - you can see some are dried up and fruit skin drying.

  • +1

Maybe wait until toilet paper is back in stock!

    • The wait will be forever then, hey.

  • +2

To many ppl are like animals and touch loose bread and dates with there bare hands. Also too many people stick there hands in the nuts and dried fruits that are available to scoop and fill your own bag. Almost everytime I'm shopping I see a culprit touching and eating from these products. In times like these woolies and coles should not be selling exposed food.

    • -1

Yeah and I saw one of the staff restocking the bottom containers and like breathing so close to the nougats

  • how do we know which Coles branches are having this on sale?
is there an online price check ?
