This is more of a technical question than an invitation to a political argument. :) But with all the talk over the last couple of days about the government FORCING their tracking app onto everyone's phone (since recanted) I was wondering how they would accomplish such a feat. Could they technically install an app on our phones without us knowing about it or will they force us to do it ourselves by using threats?

As someone who has written apps for both iOS and Android, good luck making sure the app always runs and therefore provide accurate enough result. No buts and iffs, this sounds like a sham by whoever is selling the app to the governments, they simply cannot guarantee the app working, at best we have wasted tax payer money at worst we have relaxed quarantine measures thinking we have a safety net where we actually don't…

my employer used to send out employee satisfaction surveys, claiming "please be open and frank with your responses, it's all anonymous". except check with other colleagues and everyone gets a unique URL in their invite.

that's right. we are living in minority report…… Police now have precogs to determine if your peaceful protest is going to turn violent and will "pre-emptively" arrest you.

I think you're looking at the separate information app. I haven't seen the contact tracing one in the apple app store yet, although it is meant to come today.
If only I had the confidence and trust in both the (long term) intentions of (all parts of) the government, and in the security of the truck ology as implemented, I'd download a tracking app.
But I don't. So I won't.
And if they make it "compulsory" I'll find my phone out of battery quite often when I'm out and about.
