LIFX A60 (Smart Bulbs) Twin Pack - $99 Delivered (Was $179) @ LIFX

515

Hi all - my kids were after these for their room and after a bit of hunting around, I found the twin pack for just a little more than the single item in most shops. Eg. Bunnings sell for $88.

Order direct from the manufacturer with free shipping.

For those of you who don’t know - these are smart light bulbs. 1100 lumens and apparently 16m colours. 11w energy usage at peak brightness.

I'm a huge fan of LIFX bulbs. I have a couple dozen of them at home. They're solidly made and they just work whether I'm using the app or Alexa, Google Home or Home Assistant.

However, I had a bulb stop working (the whites stopped working so it could only do colours) just outside of the warranty period.

Despite their website proclaiming that the LEDS have a 20,000 hour lifespan, they refused to replace or repair it. I pointed to Australian Consumer Law, and they simply stopped responding to my emails.

I won't be buying $50 LIFX bulbs any more.

    • How long is the warranty?

      • Two years, but 22.8 years on the LEDs apparently.

        • -1

'but 22.8 years on the LEDs apparently'
          - are you sure about your math on hours to years?

          • +1

@qzcbmo: Sorry, LED Life-span is claimed to be 22.8 years

            • @Chapp0: Maths checks out if the bulb is only used for 10% or 2.4 hours each day.

            • @Chapp0: ah, I see. it meant to say 200,000 hours?

    • +2

I've had exactly the same problem! I've persisted with complaining about them and apparently they are sending me one replacement, still got another faulty one. It's a real shame their lifespan isn't as good as they say. I've switched to the Brilliant Smart ones as well as they are so much cheaper and work well!

      • Gotta link?

          • @Chapp0: wow they have some cool stuff. nicely priced, but hard to find a lot of things in stores. the rgb globes are at officeworks at least

            • +1

@cortex: Check out https://www.jdlighting.com.au/ they have stock. JD, Bunnings and Aldi all had sales on them late last year. 3 pack of globes was $39. Search Ozbargain and you'll see.

              • +1

@Chapp0: I'm impressed with their smart dimmer switch. It works with standard dimmable lights and allows control from the switch and from the app, something that most smart lights need an additional costly switch for.

I've got one but haven't got round to having it installed yet.

      • Interesting, my Yeelights have been going for well over 2 years with no issues at all. Cost around $20 a pop - but 300 lumens lower.

    • Can't be having that.

      I'm out…

    • +1

Similar to you was a massive fan. 2 strips. 3 globes and 6 downlights. No problems at all for 4 years from the first one hence adding the rest. Then the latest update instead of tweaking the app they reconfigured the whole thing. Since the update my lights continually drop out or won't respond individual lights randomly. Pity as I have my bedroom, stairs and halfway perfectly working until this now I seldom use them due to frustration. Glad I didn't buy anymore. Any better option you are using now?

    • +11

Same thing happened to me, have 4 of these one stopped working outside warranty, they said here have a discount code go buy another one.

Mentioned Australian consumer Law and they ignored me and closed the case.

I used to make comments on LIFX ozbargain posts and would get down voted, glad it's not just me spreading the word now.

Won't ever buy LIFX products again.

    • +6

Had a different issue but same treatment from LIFX. Stated consumer law and they just said too bad. Followed up with letter from Consumer Affairs and they simply stopped responding. I wouldn't be buying from LIFX directly as their support is awful and won't follow consumer law.

    • +1

I had an issue with my original bulb after a couple of years and they replaced it immediately with an A60 once they verified the issue, didn’t ask for a purchase date or anything. Once I got the A60 that could work with home kit I bought a bunch more. They’ve been solid since.

    • Is this suitable for bedroom ceiling light? Or would it be too dim?

      • depends if you read dead-tree in bed

I have A60s in all my bedrooms but rarely run them at full-brightness. Reading is on backlit digital devices, so a softer ceiling light makes it more comfortable

    • was going to buy this buy then realised extra $10 for shipping.

      • Postage was free over a certain amount (this qualified). Maybe it’s your location or you selected a faster postage option?

        • Not seeing it. I am in Sydney and there is only one shipping option

          • @first in line: Just tried and it’s still free for me. There weren’t any other shipping options.

            • @Onnzo: Not showing up free for me and I am checking out from my phone this time

              • @first in line: Sorry - can’t help - I purchased on my phone and tried again on my phone. Maybe give them a call if this isn’t just an impulse purchase :p

                • @Onnzo: Tried checking out in Safari browser and still wants to charge me for the shipping. I will pass on the purchase :(

  • how do they stack up against yeelight besides 800 vs 1100 lumens?

    • +1

Also curious, have a couple of the Yeelights and they work perfectly - but unsure if 300 extra lumens is worth the jump in price.

      • Depends on the size of the room - a bedroom is fine with the Yeelight, but a large living area will want something brighter, especially of you cover it with a diffuser of some sort.

    • +3

I have lifx, hue and Yeelight. My preference is hue for quick control and yeelight which is running fore more than 2 years for 3 hours a day.

I hate lifx (dawn and dusk), not responsive and if someone switches them off and on at the wall, then can’t access them in the app.

      • +1

What happens when you switch them off and on at the switch?

And how do the other brands handle this?

        • They just take some time to reconnect. For me it typically starts responding within 10 seconds which is fine for me.

        • Takes time to be enabled within the app. They appear as not connected and can’t be triggered. Again this is for dawn and dusk lights. Not sure about the colour lights.

Yeelight is lot better and cheaper.

However, Hue is best, is very quick/responsive, has good accessories like sensors/switches but very expensive.

Now don’t even change the colours and in my opinion the non colour bulbs are the best. Can buy them for less than 15$.

      • +1

I agree. I have a couple of LIFX and every fifth power switch off they forget themselves. I have since given up re-configuring them.

        • +1

same with me. I've given up using mine as smart lights and instead just switch them on/off at the wall because im sick of re-configuring every time my toddler flicks the light switch.

          • +4

@PleasureMe: Switching on/off 5 times is the reset function built-in in the light. I can see how it's annoying with a toddler around.

      • Out of the 3, which one has the lowest minimum brightness?

  • I have 3 LIFX lights, one of them being the Original A21 i've had for probably 5 years now - no issues with any of them.. Obviously when im having wifi issues they also have problems, but thats to be expected.

  • Good deal, I love my A60 in games room, wish this was for the A60+ would love 2 of those in living area with the infrared for security camera.

  • I wouldn't recommend using these for the lights that will be left turned on all day every day, such as dining/living room. I've got one for my living room and the plastic part was cracked due to overheating within 2 years, also getting it to work with Apple's HomeKit is a nightmare, you'd be lucky if Siri turns it on for you once ever 10 times you ask her to.

It's a shame LIFX have recently updated their mobile app. The new app is a P.O.S. And it's not just me that thinks so, check out the app reviews in the Play Store/App Store. There are so many complaints, I'm surprised LIFX haven't changed back to the previous app design which was so much better and easier to use.

I'm seriously considering switching to Philips Hue because the new app bothers me that much. If I was a prospective new customer and didn't have any LIFX bulbs, there is no way I'd buy them now. However now that I already have about 10, it's a difficult decision.

    • +1

I also agree. The old app just worked and was great.
new app .. uuuh. POS. POS POS POS x1000.
Whomever agreed to that release should be reprimanded.

It takes a few restarts of the app for it to actually pick up my bulbs and connect to them! Grumpy.

I originally bought the LIFX because they have a documented LAN API [https://lan.developer.lifx.com/] and being a programmer I like that I could use them without the internet.

Their new app is so crap though, i'm tempted to write a simple script to set a bulb to 20% brightness which is all I really do anyway.

  • These A60 worth only few bucks IMO, whether it got 16m colors or 1 color, meaningless to me.
If you're in NSW, there're much better offers in terms of lighting. $33 for whole home down lights & flood lights replacement.

I really like my LIFX bulbs and the new app. I have them hooked to to Home Assistant as well. I would get more if I had places to put them.

Yeelight Master race.. 6x RGB bulbs for $109 shipped on boxing day

  • People who have these smart bulbs that changes colour, just wondering do you get bored of it after a while? Is it a gimmick or do you actually use the different colours daily?

    • You never use it except to show people or let the kids change it for fun once or twice, waste of money.

I think of you had your entire house set-up it might be different.

      • +2

I have two rooms set up - one with Lifx and the other with Philips Hue and I use the colour changing daily. When I'm in bed watching TV I'll have it setup to a particular colour scene, when I wake up in the morning I have the lights fade on through a sunrise scene.

Don't paint everyone with the same brush, everyone's use is different :-)

    • +1

I got numerous bulbs, colour changing is a gimmick but changing the hue and brightness is useful. I like using yellow tones with low brightness late at night to relieve eye strain. Bright when required.

    • +1

Absolutely use the colour changing feature daily, but only between different white hues. Rarely set it to actual colours, because I have several light strips for that.

For me, that's the whole point of these - voice commands and automation are fine but being able to use bright white in the morning, soft white in afternoon and warm white in evening in the same light socket makes the house much more natural feeling. To do this otherwise you'd need to mix lamps and downlights but it's not quite the same.

    • -1

Confirmed gimmick. You'll only really use hues of yellow/white, I have Philips Hue bulbs and in their case going from the ambience models to colour models isn't worth the price increase.

My exception to this is a colour lightstrip that is sync'd to my PC screen for matching lighting. Gimmicky still but looks good. I would do the same with a TV but it's not as simple to set up.

    • Depends how you use them. The colour is great for ambient lighting so if you put them in a floor or table lamp in the corner it's a nice feature to the room. However, if you use them as the sole light source such as on the ceiling in a bedroom then you will probably get sick of the colour mode very quickly.

    • I dont use most colours alone but I certainly do use them. In living room a have a few around the room. I might have a Movie Time scene, default evening theme, late night theme. It's great so certainly do find it very useful. Sure its a gimmick but not one I have ever got bored with. In short would not like to go back to White only lights. I even have a 100% orange theme set to 1% brightness for those nights I cant sleep and get up at 3.30am for an hour. Nice and soothing on the eyes and no blue light helps get back to sleep (or so they say)!

    • +1

I have my lounge room light change to yellow or green based on what bin I need to take out to the street that evening

      • heh that's a cool idea!

        • Ug….wouldn't fancy sitting in a green, yellow or blue room for long!

Suggested option: place the bin that was just collected furthest away from gate when taking in (or simular) i.e. they are rotated and in turn never need to remember as its obvious which one goes out next time. Doubt this would work in shared accom though :-)

  • +1

I have a LIFX colour bulb and numerous Xiaomi bulbs. I'd recommend the Xiaomi bulbs over LIFX anyday.

Lifx are brighter, but the difference isn't worth the cost. Lifx app is also much worse than Xiaomis but I don't use either app, use home assistant instead.

I nearly forgot to mention I've also got LIFX GU10 bulbs but I've nearly forgotten about them since I just use them as dumb bulbs now, they keep deauthenticating from my router, and it's definitely the lights at fault, all three of them, expensive POS.

No stability issues with Xiaomi and quickly reconnect when restarted from the main switch.

    • I both agree and disagree. I also have both. While the Xiaomi Yeelight is excellent value for money, I think there is a distance in terms of response time. I would never buy Lifx at full price but at this price, I think it's worth spending a bit more for better response time and slightly better colour/brightness quality. With that being said, I love the overall value the Yeelight offers.

      • Response time is due to the cloud, for me it's instant since I'm not using the official app/cloud, it's all over LAN.

        • Would you mind sending a link on how a noobie like me can set something like this up? :)

Not a fan of using the Xiaomi/Yeelight app.

  • +3

Hmm the feedback on the company makes me weary about supporting them.
Anyone seen alternatives to their 'Beams' looks quite neat for mood lightening.

  • Check out the issues on the lifx subreddit as well as the comments here. I have a few of these - the product is good - but their support is abysmal. I have original gen bulbs that have a firmware bug where they stop connecting to the cloud. Of course LIFX blames the wifi but it's not. I also have newer mini's that just go wandering and don't receive home assistants regular 'turn on / turn off' commands. Can be odd to find one or two lights not with the others.

The comments about not replacing the units after the warranty is concerning. My expectation is a $90 lightbulb would last more than 2 years. If they won't back it up.. well I don't see many 'refused warranty' arguments on the philips hue forums.

  • Cheers OP. I just bought a couple more.

Been using these lights for a couple years now without issues. Love being able to voice control them from my phone or Wear OS watch.

  • +2

I bought into LIFX early and hard.

Would not purchase anymore, I have a unifi wifi set-up that's flawless in every other aspect.

The globes drop off the network incessantly. It's so frustrating. Can't get others onboard to use them when they constantly don't respond.

  • +1

I had globes dropping off every few days when I used the shitty Huawei router that came for free

Now that I have a good router they haven't dropped off once. So FYI those with issues.

  • Has anyone tried these Kogan bulbs. yeah I know quality isn't likely to match, but $25 for two delivered…

Been using them for nearly a year. Love em, no issues and gets bright enough. Only gripe is that they are big so some fixtures may not be able to fully cover em. This will not be an issue if its just a light bulb fixture

        Thanks mate!

  • Thanks OP, bought some more.

We have the original lifx lights and some downlights. For my setup the new lifx app is very responsive. The old app was useless and I was using Yonomi app to control and schedule the lights. Now I've switched back to lifx app.

For on/off and brightness control, we have google home minis and amazon echo dots everywhere and both work well.
I get the feel amazon echo is slightly better to control the light? I also use amazon alexa app for location-based controls (lights up when I arrive etc).

I did notice less drop outs since I upgraded to Netgear AX8 router last year.

  • +3

Bought one a few year back, had given up using it as a smart light due to the hassle of frequent re-configuring. would never buy again.

    • Seen similar feedback on YouTube tech vids, they said they've moved to philips hue.. I have one lifx (came free with Amazon dot) and some philips hues… Will be adding more philips after the feedback here.

  • Are these smaller than the Philips Hue E27 bulbs? The Hues are too big for my ceiling fan light covers.

    • My guess would be yes. They are all long. I own these and Yeelights and would expect simular size to Hues.

  • +1

I'm another with a negative LIFX experience. Light continually turns itself on random intervals. Wouldn't buy again.

  • avoid lifx at all costs at the moment, you cannot do 90% of the effects at the moment. review the apps in the store for yourself before buying .
