Consumer Discretionary Spending during COVID-19 - Are You Spending Less?

Did a scan of polls but didn't see this. Please close if I'm wrong.

Ignoring essentials like food, fuel, housing etc.. How has consumer discretionary spending changed since COVID-19? Has it gone up? Stayed the same? Gone down?

Curious at how the OZB crowd's spending habits have or have not changed since the pandemic.

Spending a bit less, mostly because the AUD slump means the cost benefits of buying OS are mostly not there anymore. Also there are less specials on at the supermarkets which means the weekly shop is a bit higher as well. Also where I might normally buy 12/24 units of something that I am now only allowed to buy 2 of means we're spending less. Of course fuel is down a lot…right at the the time where we aren't allowed to drive anywhere so a bit of saving there also. So swings and roundabouts I guess. :)

Haven't bought anything from ozb. Been cooking a more or buying less take away too (still does, but less).

  • i thought the fridge, TV, netfix, monitors/PC, sales are up ?

  • Still working as normal so no change.

  • Spending is way down for me as many of my discretionary spending has dopped. That said, the lockdown does not suit me or my environment but as commented on another post, will do what is necessary for the time being.

Will I go wild once the restricitions are lifted, definitely - Australia needs all of us to spend and go crazy.

    • Agree with everything you said - ordinarily I would want to celebrate by going on holidays but we'll see.

In my mind i'm 'saving' on travelling expenses Petrol/Pub Transport,
So i can afford to make more silly purchases than normal, (Puzzle Boxes, silly tech crap etc)

  • I'm saving $50 per week on public transport which goes straight into electricity and gas.

Spending a lot less on things like dining out, petrol and outings.

    Spending more on investments.

    • Gold and (carefully selected) healthcare/biotech.

  • Spending less and my cocaine supplier died from coronavirus

    • but cocaine kills coronavirus

      • He used a rolled up $20 to snort it & the note had coronavirus

    • So sorry for your loss in these hard times.😅

      • Thanks bro

I'm doing my best to support small businesses in these difficult times. Booze, drugs & prostitutes are still essentials for me

I've just substituted my weekly costs for work (drycleaning, public transport, lunches, etc) for either work-from-home related stuff or just things I want.

  • Spending a bit more at Bunnings since finally got around to catching up on the DIY maintenance and home improvements at home. Also trying to maximise work from home related expenses such as computer gears and ergonomic furnitures.

Offset by some savings from coffee, eating-out, transport.

  • Spending more:
I get into UberEats sprees and get it few times a week. This happens about 2-3 times a year.
I've been on a spree for the past 2 weeks…but I eventually realise (yet again) that its overpriced and delivers lukewarm soggy food.
I spent about $100 on loungewear now that I am staying home more.
    Groceries are about the same

    Spending less
Life has slowed down and so have I.
I have a busy job and was always on the run so I've saved of petrol, public transport, those odd coffees/bakery item/chocolate bar I would grab on the run.
I don't get to catch up with friends over dinner at a restaurant
Love to travel and intended to travel at the end of the year - saved a few grand there

    Overall - spending less.

Casinos and pokie parlours being closed is a huge boost to some people's budgets. I wouldn't mind if my local casino remained closed for at least a few more months. That's going to break a costly addiction for many people.

I wish those on the boards of these clubs imagined it was their own mum was on the pokies.

I'm spending a lot less. My spending has been absolutely slashed over the past month, to the point where it's amazing how little I spend. Total spending for the first 14 days of this month has been just over $200. That includes everything, including one utility payment.

I will be refinancing my mortgage next month so I'm a little wary of spending too little. The loan's agent may look at my spending (on target for $600 in total this month) and think I'm cooking the books.

    • Doesn’t matter if you have low actual expenses, banks will just increase them to the HEM benchmark

  • Saving the $5 spent daily on coffee by working from home.

  • less fuel, no toll, less mileage (means less frequent car service)
    less dining out or takeaway

more grocery (more home cooking, more baking and less options for cheap brands)

more water, electricity & toilet paper (but hopefully it will be offset with tax refund)

  • 16 hours of polling …. although not sure if everyone understanding what I was asking lol. Wasn't asking if one was spending overall less, just if their discretionary spending has gone up/down
