Optus Mobile Broadband $15 for 25GB of Data Per Month (Includes 20GB of Bonus Data for 24 Months)

510

Noticed that Optus have a special on their mobile broadband plans.

They are offering an additional 20gb of data per month for their plans.
So their cheapest plan of $15 per month now comes with 25GB instead of 5GB.
The $25 plan now comes with 45GB and the $50 plan now comes with 95GB.

    $10 per extra 1GB

    Ouch

      This really kills the deal.

  • If you already have another optus plan, you can ‘data pool’ this plan as well.
Good thing they will warn you about the usage once it reaches 50% or more so you can adjust the data usage (less Netflix nights)

Fully regret getting Optus, still waiting on NBN in this suburb in Brisbane so I was using an ALDI sim with 75gb a month which was handling 4K streaming. Hopped over to a 500gb plan with "full" signal on Optus I'm watching dancing rectangles pretending to be a YouTube video on 144 and 240p…

Just venting after banging my head on the wall all night trying to get internet that doesn't make you long for the dial up days

Which modem do you have? You might be able to switch the bands it used to connect with and boost your speed. Mine went from 1.5Mbps to 25 after switching to band 40 (2300Mhz).

      • Thanks for the heads up. It's a Huawei B818 - I've set it to 2300Mhz only for the preferred network mode and we'll see how it goes tomorrow.

        • Vodafone has the best data network in the country, just the smallest.

Brisbane is incredibly well covered; if you need wireless boradband, vodafone will be your best solution IF you have good reception for them.

          • @MasterScythe:

Vodafone has the best data network in the country, just the smallest.

Can you elaborate on that? Source?

            • @Domingo: TPG has the best Vodafone has the best 3Mobile network in the country. Just the smallest.

              FTFY.

              @Domingo: Source, is me.
              I'm a network Engineer.
              Talking 4G, traditinally:
Telstra offers 10-15 MHz of bandwidth.
Optus has been offering 10MHz; recently expanding to 15MHz.
Vodafone offers 20MHz in most areas.

It has improved since the inital 4G rollout phase, however significant areas have focused on increasing coverage more than speed.
              It's not a new thing….. Here's an article from 2013.
              https://www.techradar.com/au/news/phone-and-communications/m…

You can get more detail on it here (including MIMO and other techs):
              https://whirlpool.net.au/wiki/mobile_phone_frequencies

Basically; yes, thanks to MIMO and band pairing, most providers are able to offer 20MHz or even 40MHz streams (Nighthawks on Telstra able to to 1Gbps in metro cities….); however if you're in an area where you're on a single tower, relying heavily on a single frequency, then there are VERY good odds that Vodafone will perform better.

Either do a lot of research into what bands reach your house, and from which tower they come.
Or, for the lazy man; invest in a 365day expiry sim, call it a 'backup' in case your primary sim has an outage, and test for yourself.

Whichever wins, either port, or use as a data sim.

      • Alright credit where credit is due to ol' Optus - locked it onto 2300Mhz and got 91/9 on a speedtest consistent throughout the day… Dancing rectangles are gone hopefully for good

        • Ah 2300mhz, how we love you.
HOPEFULLY it doesn't get hammered in peak times.

at least, even for the layman it's easy to understand; the lower the frequency, the better the coverage, but the lower the speed; you can test and try any frequency that reaches your house.

      • Yeah I had good success with this using that French program to change the frequency.

This is a data only SIM.

If you were planning on getting an iPad anyway, with the extra data seems like an ok deal? Although there is probably limited use for the "mobile" data in the near term (maybe for backup if your home internet connection goes down).

    E.g. iPad 7th Gen cellular 32gb RRP $729
    Optus 12 month plan $57 (15+42), min cost $684.

So monthly payments, small discount on the iPad ($45) and free 30gb/month data?

(128gb iPad would be $889 RRP vs $828 for the same $15 Optus 12 month plan)

Hopefully I've read the Optus website correctly lol

Why don’t Optus have peace of mind, like Telstra and Vodafone?

  • Thanks only signed up for the 5gb plan a month ago. Nice addition for nothing more!

  • Does this work with home wireless broadband modems? I tried to buy this for my Optus branded Huawei B525 but the girl in the shop says it won't work for this modem.

    Anyone had any luck?

  • Can you use a mobile phone for this? As a hotspot? Od you you need a USB dongle thingy?

    • Unless optus are locking things out for some reason; an old phone will work fine, and usually WORLDS better than a USB-stick modem.
Just don't make any test calls or SMS's on it; the prices can be BRUTAL.
