the air filter is apparently able to achieve PM2.5 filtration efficiency of up to 97%

    Apparently?

    • +13

It's Krusteriffic, Johnny Unitas! But is my upper lip supposed to bleed like this?

  • +34

Will the virus be cured by the time these arrive?

    • Recurrent ??

    Washing hands = Free

    • +12

these don't stop virus/bacteria (you need a n95/n99 mask), they're for pollution. Would have been handy back In January for the fires.

      • +2

n95 masks are rated to block 95% of PM2.5 so these would be slightly better if the 97% rating is true

      • +1

        you need a n95/n99 mask

this is n95. I have one.

It's just a standerd n95 disposable mask with a foam outer shell. The foam is just cosmetic.

It's disposable after 18 hours of use.

        • +3

PM2.5 means the mask is rated for filtering particles 2.5 microns and larger. The coronavirus particles are closer to 0.1 microns in size. Therefore I doubt this mask will be very useful in these times.

          • +15

@Fishdog: Respiratory droplets are larger than the virus itself

          • +2

@Fishdog: Even the non-n95 surgical masks can be of use in reducing risk.

            https://smartairfilters.com/en/blog/n95-mask-surgical-preven…

            • @lolcoaster: While better than nothing, like a scarf or a bandana - wearing a surgical mask is only really effective for protecting others if you're infected compared to the efficacy of an N95 for self protection.

          • @Fishdog:

The coronavirus particles are closer to 0.1 microns in size

Irrelevant. They do not float free in the air, but in mucus/saliva droplets.

        • -2

It's disposable after 18 hours of use.

          18 hours of Chinese smog?

They don't suddenly stop working, but slowly get clogged and reduce effectiveness.
In clean air, you may get much more use while retaining >90% effectiveness.

        • +1

So you can't wash them and reuse again? That's a shame.

        • +3

this is n95. I have one.

Ive just found the packaging, says kn95 on front.

          • +1

@ash2000: Then that means its a fake N95..

            • +2

@mikokik5: Seems unlikely from xiaomi, but anything is possible.

Frankly, I'd be buying a paper kn95 mask with exhaling valve, cheaper.

Of course all masks claiming kn95 from China need to be viewed with a healthy dose of skepticism.

    • +2

the big issue is air born droplets …. it attacks respiratory system ……. washing hand makes people feel safer but the big deal is air born droplets e.g on train, fight is supermarket to get toilet paper, etc.

      • ^^^ this! I dont get why some people think simply by washing hands would prevent being infected. +1

        • -1

You and other paranoid mask people are the reason why medical staff don't have access to any. Every intelligent health professional in Australia are telling people you don't need a mask, you must be better educated than them

          • +5

@UberIsCool: so are you saying all the countries that use wears are paranoid? eg. Taiwan, HK, China?
Dont you think it's logically flawed that the medical staff needs them (ie. the do work to stop the spread to medical staff). So the masks only work for medical staff but wont work for normal people like u and me?

            • @homersyd: Medical staff have many patients constantly breathing on them all day and in close proximity. It’s like when you have an x-ray and they leave the room so they don’t expose themselves to X-rays all day.

Wear one if it makes you feel safe, but touching your face without clean hands will be worse.

            • @homersyd: Yeah, you know the one's that have the virus under wraps /s

      • Really? see many people sneezing in front of you? Coughing all over you? Air born droplets dissipate, you don't walk into them and suck them in.

Mask pretend to make people safe. They are only good for medical workers who are in patient faces.

        • +1

what about in the lift …

          • -1

@dcep: Like I said, they don't just float around. If you have to sneeze or cough, do it into your elbow.

            • +2

@UberIsCool: I have only seen like 3 out 10 people who sneeze or cough and cover with their hands, let alone elbows. I agree if everyone follow that guideline, then the need for masks would greatly reduced however the majority of people dont so…

            • +4

@UberIsCool: Um, they don't just float around? Please visit https://www.who.int/ for some up to date facts - can float around for 3 hours after infected person as left the room… misinformation puts everyone at risk.

              • @ebaypus: I'm gonna believe a guy on the internet posting under UberlsCool before believe WHO.

  • +6

Only a matter of time before we see Xiaomi re-usable toilet paper…

    • +8

      They have bidets

    • +2

No mask without replaceable filters are supposed to be resused.

      • +2

Yep, this is a regular paper n95 mask with a funky shell. No way of replacing the inner paper filter.

    • It's double-sided, after all.

  • +1

Actually curious if these are effective. Mask only needs to prevent airborne saliva particles from entering the mouth.

    • +1

      you mean nose

      • you mean eyes

  • +6

    Just out of curiosity,
why is everyone not wearing a mask?? seriously?

    • +17

Because they’re next to impossible to buy

    • its the “i’m statistically safe” attitude “ and makes you feel safe, wearing a make makes you acknowledge you are vulnerable ….. you will see health care workers wearing them as they appreciate the risks.

      • +1

No they dont, I can tell you first hand as my friend works in hospital. Only the so-called first line medical staff wear masks!!!!

        • If its a third party that works in the hospital (your friend) the info certainly is not first hand.

    • It doesn't look cool and the coronavirus will toughen you up.

      • +3

        put hairs on your chest.

    • why is everyone not wearing a mask?? seriously?

Mask is mostly effective in 2 cases:

      1) When you are sick - so it prevents coughs, sneezes being passed on.

      2) You're a healthcare worker dealing with lots of people who are sick.

When you don't fall into the above 2 categories:

      1) Wash your hands with soap.

      2) Don't touch your face / eyes / nose / mouth with your hands.

      • +13

        2) You're a healthcare worker dealing with lots of people who are sick.

I don't believe that. If we had an abundance of masks we'd be encouraged to wear them but we don't so we aren't. That lines just thrown out there so we feel okay about not having them.

        • +4

I've been actively working in a COVID-19 clinic (my office became part of it). We are all required to wear masks and that's just the start of the protective equipment we have.

          • @Clear: A COVID-19 clinics one thing. Medical staff not running those specific clinics aren’t necessarily wearing masks however. I work in a hospital and most staff aren’t wearing masks, and the advice going out right now is most staff don’t need to.

            • @Smigit: Yup generally only those are going to be in contact with patients or in those areas are required to wear one.

        • Lol, conspiracy man

          • @UberIsCool: Likely he's just able to analyse facts and think critically for himself, unlike most of the unwashed masses

        • This is exactly right craigoss, and also:
          1) When you are sick - so it prevents coughs, sneezes being passed on.

Even an N100 mask will not protect others if it has an exhalation valve as most do.

      • +7

Do you seriously believe that those in China or Korea are wearing a mask just because they are Sick? I don't get that. just because you wear a mask that doesn't mean that you are sick. you prevent any potential harms by wearing it. I've seen some elderly coughing on a train without covering it with his elbow . he just Shot the cough with no barriers. that is the time that I thought i should start wearing a mask. you don't wear a mask not because you are sick we need to encourage others to wear a mask because we need to protect ourselves

        • +4

          You gonna wear goggles too?

          • +1

@krisspy: Between my rigid scleral lenses and glasses; i think i already do :p

          • @krisspy: Goggles would certainly add a layer of protection but not nearly as much as a mask would provide since, as we all know, when inhaling you actively and repeatedly intake a sizable volume of molecules internally from your surrounding environment.

        • +1

you prevent any potential harms by wearing it

No, it could be meaningless depending on the use. e.g. flip the mask inside out (I've seen it)

        • Asians been wearing masks for years, way before any outbreaks. And still look what happened!

    • +2

Because the virus can enter through your eyes, also.

Sure you didn't breathe it in, but it will just land in the mucous membranes in your eyes.

This is why healthcare workers wear faceshields or the full face respirator units as well.

      • Definitely, a faceshield or goggles would certainly add a layer of protection but not nearly as much as a mask would provide since, as we all know, when inhaling you actively and repeatedly intake a sizable volume of molecules internally from your surrounding environment.

    • Because they won't prevent you from getting the virus. It enters through the eyes and any small openings, ie under the mask if you aren't 100% clean shaven.

If someone sneezes and it lands on your mask, you will remove the mask getting the germs on your hands and then you touch your face. Best to practice hand washing.

      • Hand washing is good but a mask performs a different function. That's why it's crucial to also practice correct mask removal procedure. Eye protection would certainly add a layer of protection, but not nearly as much as a correctly worn mask would provide since, as we all know, when inhaling you actively and repeatedly intake a sizable volume of molecules internally from your surrounding environment.

    • -1

Because they're pointless unless your sick….. They're suppose to stop people spreading it.

      • If they were pointless unless you're sick healthcare workers wouldn't wear them… Unless they were also sick.

    • +2

One of the problems is people don't know anything about mask safety, they think put it on wear it and they're safe.
When they get home and take the mask off they touch the front of the mask without gloves on, collect all the potential mucus, saliva, virus onto their bare hands. And for the first time all day they then pick their nose because they haven't been able to do it all day because they've had a mask on, they then deliver a highly contagious finger into the most vulnerable hole in their body, this is how most air-borne viruses enter the body, up the nose then into the lungs.

Damn was hoping this was an actual useful product because it looks so cool.

    • It is; as useful as any other at least.

Just expensive for a few hours of use.

      • It is; as useful as any other at least.

If it was certified by any regulatory body… perhaps.

  • I'll buy some if comes with FREE 3-6 days Priority Shipping.

  • Wondering how these will fit on a non-asian shaped faced? Anyone tried one?

    • +1

there are many asian made things that wIll fit onto a non asian made face ….. have tried.

      • +2

        like filipinas?

        • +1

          Hmmmm, found George Christenson.

    • +1

I have a largeish nose, most face masks sit oddly on me :( they seem to fit nicer on asian faces as they tend to have a flatter nose bridge, they kinda stick up oddly along the nose bridge on myself.

      • +1

The same way your sneakers fit a non asian shaped foot.

    • +2

      Thats a fair question.

Im into the FPV hobby, and a lot of goggles dont clear our western noses.

      • Agreed. +1 for FPV

  • +1

    I can't find the replacement filters…

  • -2

PM 2.5 means it filers down to 2.5 micron …. not all that useful when coronavirus is .3 micron

You need n95 mask, with is not 95% filtration, but at least 94% when tested with Sodium Chloride aerosol at a flow rate of 95
    litres/minute

kind of a different measurement I think

Even a surgical mask (not n95, not sealed) was effective in reducing the likelihood of catching the flu.

      • +1

I don't usually put much faith in non-government sites, although it's probably true, but talking specifically about the mask http://cec.health.nsw.gov.au/__data/assets/pdf_file/0007/567…

        • Well this is the study they cite: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/19193267

"Many countries are stockpiling face masks for use as a nonpharmaceutical intervention to control virus transmission during an influenza pandemic. We conducted a prospective cluster-randomized trial comparing surgical masks, non-fit-tested P2 masks, and no masks in prevention of influenza-like illness (ILI) in households. Mask use adherence was self-reported. During the 2006 and 2007 winter seasons, 286 exposed adults from 143 households who had been exposed to a child with clinical respiratory illness were recruited. We found that adherence to mask use significantly reduced the risk for ILI-associated infection, but <50% of participants wore masks most of the time. We concluded that household use of face masks is associated with low adherence and is ineffective for controlling seasonal respiratory disease. However, during a severe pandemic when use of face masks might be greater, pandemic transmission in households could be reduced."

      • +1

Real world application is a bit different though. For example sitting next to or in front of someome infected for a period is high risk from air circulation. There are studies and cases from buses, taxis etc where they tracked that ppl got it. In such cases pm2.5 or not sealed will be inferior.

        • Xizor Spot on

      • +1

What? NO! A surgical mask is basically strong tissue paper. It's designed to stop water droplets from reaching a patient if you cough or sneeze during an operation when the have open wounds, not stop a virus from getting through the paper to the wearer

  • +6

This is a dust filter. Doesn't come with the water repellent layer needed right now against COVID19 (repelling droplets)

    • +3

Well where do we get those then?

      • +1

can't we make some with a 3d printer?????

    This company is ridiculous
