  • Just wondering will Mesh WiFi have better roaming than setup multiple APs?

    Since Mesh WiFi Interconnected.

      Marketing will have you believe YES!

      Techies will tell you that Wi-Fi roaming is solely determined by the clients and not the stations. The stations can give hints to clients via 802.11k/r/v (if the clients support these new protocols at all), and the stations can keep disconnecting and ignoring the clients, but it is the clients which will decide if and when to roam and to which station.

      I went from multiple APs to a mesh wifi and noticed that my Apple devices now switch between the stations more seamlessly. It's not perfect as you will still notice a slight disruption with some apps e.g. two second drop in a VOIP call, but it's still much better than before as I had other apps that dropped sessions completely.

      I can't speak for other operating systems as I don't tend to roam around the house with them. The other plus is that the coverage is significantly better with the mesh wifi but that could be because I was replacing an 8 year old system.

      • now switch between the stations more seamlessly

        That is what I thought because they are interconnected by WiFi instead of multi APs on the same network but no Interconnected WiFi signal.

        Router -> Mesh1 —-> Mesh 2 —-> Mesh3

        Multi APs.

        Router —> AP1

        AP2

  • Thanks OP. You may run in to some trouble with Amazon if you’re hoping to swing a credit for incorrect image; it’s pretty clear in the description and title that it’s an add-on satellite.
