Free Flight Cancellation on Jetstar (6 Months to Book/12 Months to Travel) & Qantas (Voucher) until December 31 2021

4641

Fee Free cancellation in form of a Voucher. If you had a fare you were going to abandon this could be of use. I would expect Virgin Australia Group to follow soon. Still nothing on Status freezes but I would imagine that will be announced in the future

Qantas and Jetstar customers given option to cancel flights and receive travel credit
Applies to customers with existing and new bookings on domestic and international flights

ADVICE FOR CUSTOMERS

Customers should not call the contact centres. Due to high demand, we are experiencing long call wait times.

To access this offer:

Qantas Anyone holding a Qantas ticket for travel before 31 July 2020 can get a flight credit and retain the full value of your booking. You need to do this by 30 April 2020. The flight credit is valid for booking and travel by 31 December 2021. This gives you more than 18 months to plan, rebook and travel.

If you already have a Qantas flight credit issued on or after 31 January 2020, this will also be automatically extended but may take a few weeks to update in our system.

From 9am tomorrow Monday 16 March 2020, Jetstar customers should go to Manage My Booking on Jetstar.com. Please do not call the Jetstar contact centre before that time should you need further assistance.
Voucher Valid: Book within 6 months of issue. Travel within 12 months

**If you have reward point booking, this can be cancelled fee free. If you have booked via a third party site (Aunt Betty etc), please contact these specific companies. I strongly do advise against booking on those sites as in these situations of change (regardless weather, virus) they are difficult to deal with.

*I will add in details for Virgin Australia if they follow tonight or tomorrow morning

Update: Extended further to Dec 2021, thanks dealbot

      • thanks, going to start sorting it out tomorrow…

    Virgin Australia has followed.

    • not really - they're just waiving change fees to change dates. Not as good as a travel credit.

      • They are doing travel credit

  • +1

Need to book my ANZ travel rewards flight by mid April. Was going to book a June flight. Hopefully can get an extension on the flight, or book, then cancel (but pretty sure ANZ flight is Virgin.

Still nothing on Status freezes but I would imagine that will be announced in the future

Hoping for this. I've just cancelled 3 work trips I had in the next month

  • +2

Can confirm I called Tiger air today and they also gave a 6 month flight credit.

    • I just called Tiger and they told me we dont give refunds or credit ,we can rebook for free but pay if the flight is more not happy

      • +2

They didn't even question me, I said for the reason covid. They then said they are sending a credit. No questions asked

  • +1

Anyone know if I can cancel the flight if I booked through Amex Travel?

    • Yes you can but you may still be subject to cancellation fees per fare rules as straight out cancellations aren't covered under the current Qantas waivers unless there are very specific circumstances. Also if you did use your Amex travel credit, this will be lost when you cancel.

Other options are to hold the fare in credit or change your flights, both of which options allow you to retain your travel credit and also there are waivers for so you won't be slugged with any airline fees.

Speak with Amex, they can go through all the options properly for you so you are better informed.

  • Has Singapore Airlines followed the same course ?

    • +1

Yup their travel wavier policy has just been updated.

      • Thanks will follow this up.

      • "Travel wavier policy has just been updated"

Had a look but couldn't find it. Would you have a link to it ?

        Travelling May - June

        Thanks

        • A link to their travel wavier policy can be found here

  • Hello
Just wondering we booked flights last year for travel to USA in May/June
Flights booked with classic awards (points+tax)
If I cancel thorough the website , it comes up with agreement to T&C which showed 6,000points penalty.. is this waived? Does anyone know?

    • +7

It says you shouldn't need to call them to get the voucher, can't be that powerful or important if you had to…

  • +2

Called Flight Center, was provided 3 options to

    1. Cancel (at a $700 fee)
    2. Change date (change date fee, can't remember)
    3. Credit for time being which will only last till December 2020, and when you make the booking you'll be changed the change fee.

Pushed on and mentioned this Qantas announcement. They had to call Qantas but I'll be getting a full refund which will take 12 weeks to credit.

    Hope this helps someone out!

    • Hi, how did you get the refund from Flight Center?

I have Jetstar return flight to Japan in April purchased from Flight Center, I thought Jetstar only offer travel credit?

      • Hey Ice666, to clarify this was a Qantas->Jetstar Asia flight (from SYD to PNH via SIN).

I called them to get the refund. As I purchased the flight with a flight center gift card, it'll be returned to the flight center gift card.

        • No refund only travel credit for me.

  • Thanks OP, one less headache out of my planned trip next week

  • Waiting for air Newzealand to do the same for flight from Australia tonew Zealand.

  • Travelling to Adelaide mid May, you think we should be cancelling/refund?

  • What's the likelihood of a virgin status freeze?

    • I hope so as I’m falling down to Silver. 20 SC is all I’ve got to do before mid April.

      • -1

Just fly to Melbourne, have some lunch, fly back. There's basically no difference in risks across any Australian city, so avoiding domestic travel seems silly to me.

        • And even better domestic flights are cheap right now.

  • I've booked a holiday package via Jetstar Holidays that includes flights on Jetstar and Hotel accommodation all together.

Any idea if this cancellation/voucher offer applies to the Hotel accommodation also?

I'll give Jetstar a call soon enough to check but not looking forward to the wait times… hopefully someone already knows the answer.

    • How did you go? I’m in the same boat. They said they will email the hotel for a refund and it’s at the hotels discretion… flights they can do immediate vouchers.

      • I did not go well. Was on hold for 2 and a half hours and I could not hold any longer.

I saw on this page (which was not there a day or so ago) they have a form to complete and if the hotel is fully refundable they will process the voucher without having to call them.

        https://www.jetstar.com/au/en/holidays

I was hoping for a full refund now every country is on the do not fly list. Seems a bit unfair to get a voucher with so many restrictions.

        • I managed to get a full refund today on my Jetstar Holiday package using the online chat. At first they said I could only get a credit voucher and my hotel was non refundable. I pushed the issue more so they then "looked into it".

After a long wait on the chat they said "as a one time gesture of goodwill" they would provide a full refund of the flights AND hotel. I had to reiterate I could only have a refund as a credit voucher was useless to me given the time frame to use it was so short and our circumstances prevents us from using it within the given time frame.

Just remember to push for a refund as their default option is to not provide it.

Hopefully the refund hit my account soon but it seems good so far.

          • +1

@hayythere: That is great news. But I keep getting told no. Was there any specific lines you mentioned?

            • @TomGum: I said a few things along the lines that a travel credit is no use to us because we have obligations that won't allow us to travel within the voucher validly time frame.

Also that Jetstar cancelled the flights which is no fault of ours.

I also said that I "expect a refund" due to the above points. I tried to be firm but not super annoying. That's about all the advice I can give.

It probably also comes down to who you speak with as some people might be nicer than others. Good luck with your refund.

  • Dang, flight leaves 1st June, come on guys!

  • +4

As filthy as I think this is, I'd say expect a big fight in getting refunds. The only way they'll give it is if the Government blind sides them with a another change that ties their hands legally (e.g. Do Not Travel advisory).

They are dishing out vouchers and credit because they know profits are tanking. No new sales and refunds of anything is obviously bad for the money figures.

They have their own curve to flatten …

    • +1

Exactly. This may seem generous at face value but in reality what they are doing is the absolute bare minimum and it's not very customer friendly at all.

      • +3

it's not very customer friendly at all

Well you really have two choices, it's either this or the entire company goes under and nobody gets their money back and nobody flies.

I'm not so concerned about Qantas, but Virgin may well go under.

        • When I say seems generous at face value but not very customer friendly, I mean things like this:

The flight vouchers are only valid for travel within 12 months of the initial booking date. That means if you booked on 20 March 2019, then the voucher they are offering is only valid for travel that commences prior 20 March 2020.

My agent is currently arguing with Qantas to get a waiver to extend the validity, but Qantas won't budge.

PERFECTLY 110% happy to have my funds held in credit. They need to protect against revenue leakage and I would be completely supportive. I get it. But common sense needs to prevail - with stupid rules and conditions like this, it's not a great customer experience.

Like I said, looks great at face value…

  • Hi,

Has anyone having issues getting full refund for their flights?

I rang BYOjet and was advised that the Full Refund is only applicable to flights booked on and before 31 January?

We booked our flights in Feb.

Went to Qantas website and no mention of such restriction.

Only it has been be cancelled by 31 March.

    Can anyone advise?

    • Just wondering if BYOJet advised you that they would still be charging their own cancellation fee of $250 per passenger per booking?

  • +1

Received a credit voucher for my cancelled Japan flights, tried rebooking another country and -$225 is taken away from the credit voucher because of a change fee.

    • How long did it take for your voucher to come through?

      • 2 hours, still annoyed that I'm charged a $225 change fee to make a new booking when the post says these fees will be waived…

        • Human beings aren't infallible, it's not exactly surprising that someone has made a mistake. If you need to book it ASAP you can just tell them and ask them to fix it.

          • +1

@callum9999: Jetstar aren’t the greatest to deal with

  • -1

IMO. Instead of full refund. Qf or jetstar should allow the passenger a swap of future flight of the same route (destination).
What happen if they start to charged extra premium price after it is safe to flight to recover from their current loss, don't forget they are working for share holder not most for you

  • I applied for my Jetstar flights "refund" voucher at 3am. At midnight, I could only select the inbound to refunded, then about 3am I could refund both in and outbound flights.

May not have to wait until 9am to apply is all I'm sayin'. However, 2 hour later I haven't received a confirmation email or the voucher.

  • -5

Taxpayers will be bailing out Qantas & Vigin within 2 months. Once we own part of these grubs, we can demand no change fees

    • +2

you won't own part of them. You'll just be making a donation.

    • haha… thats not how it works.

I do love when people make bold statements without knowing what they're talking about!

      • I know we can't demamd no fee changes, that's just tongue in cheek.

The bailout of Qantas is real though

  • The refund request is now active on Jetstar flights. It didn't work for me on PC - just goes to a blank page, but works on mobile phone. Go figure.
    "request reimbursement"

    • I still don't have a "request reimbursement" option for flights in April..

      • The top of the page will have a yellow box staying your flight may be affected - click the "Find out More" button then scroll down click "Check options" then there will be an option to change flight or request reimbursement.

Of course they don't make it easy!

        Good luck

        • Thanks for the info. I only get the option to use live chat :-/. Maybe it's because it was partially booked with a voucher.

          • @Underlord: Im in the same boat (booked partially with a voucher). Did you end up getting the value of the voucher back?

            • +1

@mt007: Yep. After waiting a while to get through on Live Chat, they said they said that they credited the full cost of the booking.

  • +1

I still can’t cancel (cancel is greyed out) Bali flights using classic rewards, leaving
Middle of April . Says to call Qantas but I can’t even
Get through to their call centre at all “ due to high demand “

Will try again after 9am EST .

    • +1

Tried in APP and in browser . No luck either way ,
      Still all greyed out.

  • +1

I cancelled my Qantas flight this morning and the option was refund or voucher. I took the refund.

Was going on a cruise on Thursday from Sydney. Could have still flow to Sydney for a few days but decided it was safer to stay home due to the coronavirus.

    • Did you have free cancellation or did they deduct the fee from the refund? I have both options also, but not keen about paying a cancellation fee.

      • Yes, I would really like to know this too!

  • Holy cow, I got issued an Insurance cancellation letter a few days ago on my request (all fees forfeited). I have sent them an email with this link seeing if I'm eligible.

  • For the life of me cannot find the cancellation option in My Bookings for Jetstar.

Change Flights is greyed out, can anyone help

    • Same here. I am unable to cancel my flights too. Has anyone been able to action the same ?

    • There should be a button that says "flight options" or "view options".

      • Thanks, found it. It's in the alert at the top of the page.

      • There is only View more options and it shows only Booking Summary. Change Flights is greyed out and that's where I remember we used to have ability to Cancel

        • Same boat. Can't find a Cancel button for Jetstar.

  • Voucher doesn't include the payment fee…😒

    • If you re-book there's no payment fee for vouchers, so you at least won't pay the fee again.

      • Ah ok, thats good to hear. Cheers.

  • Did anyone successfully claim the vouchers? I am under manage my booking section and I dont see any thing that can be clicked to redeem credit vouchers.

    • Ignore.. can see the option now and claimed successfully.

      • Mind posting a screenshot of where the Jetstar cancel button is?

        All I see is this - https://imgur.com/HZRIUbH

        • +1

Click on the alert at the top, then flight options.

I can't see those options any more since my flight is cancled, but if you post full screenshots (with personal info blacked out), it would help with memory.

          • @Ughhh: Thanks so much, found it.

            Appreciate the reply

  • I cancelled my flights just before the announcement is made!! :( :(

  • Can't find a Cancel button for Jetstar

Somebody mind posting a screenshot of where the Jetstar cancel button is?

    All I see is this - https://imgur.com/HZRIUbH

  • Has anyone tried cancelling only some people or is the whole booking cancelled?
I can't go, but the rest of the group are still going and we're all booked under the one booking number.
    Jetstar.

  • I'm waiting out to see if my flight on the 25th to NZ gets cancelled as I'd prefer a refund to the credit note.
All hotels cancelled without penalty (through booking.com) despite being non-refundable bookings so that was good.

  • +1

I would think this is a well publicized move to try to get people to take credit so they don't have to refund.

After 1 April they may have to refund everything.

  • +1

**If you have reward point booking, this can be cancelled fee free.

I'm not sure if this is true. It allows change without incurring 5000 pts now, but the 6000 pts for cancellation is still in the conditions when you go through the process.

    • I'm looking for clarification on this too.

It says: 'Qantas Frequent Flyers who have booked classic redemption flights on Qantas, Jetstar and all partner airlines, and no longer wish to travel, will have change fees waived.'

Is cancel the same as change?

      • Is cancel the same as change?

No, I just pushed my flights out by a month or so and did not get charged the change fee (except for differences in taxes).

Cancellation fee (6,000 pts) will still be applicable apparently.

  • I have no "Voucher" option and am too scared to hit the "Cancel" button. Anyone had the same and consequently been issued with a credit voucher?

    • Someone else mentioned earlier that they hit cancel and didn't receive a voucher or refund option and it went directly to "your flight has been cancelled" without issuing a credit voucher.

      • Any news on this? I did the same refund for a voucher and have received nothing.

  • +1

We booked our trip in June last year for travel in May. Unfortunately the conditions of the credit mean we have to commence travel no later than June (12 months from ticket issue). There is no point for us to do that, I'm sure the restrictions will still be in place.

  • My sister and I are booked on the same booking to fly to Bali with Jetstar 18 Mar. I get that they can give us a voucher for future travel but the chance that we will be able to travel together again is very limited. Anyone know if it's possible to get seperate vouchers.

    • Split the booking first into two. Then cancel and ask for the voucher.

      • I may need to do this - How do we split the booking? Customer service or can we do this online?

  • Been trying to get on to qf since last night. As I type this, 2 hours 35 minutes on hold. My flight departed 2 hours ago. Can’t change online. Says contact your Qantas office. I have a full points booking to change. Haven’t been able to get thru to them at all.

    • i waited 6 hours on hold on Saturday before someone could attend to me.

      • I’m still on hold right now. Up to 4.44 hh.mm

        • 3h 17m and still going.
