Switch to Qantas Health Insurance and Earn up to 120k Qantas Points for Couples, 60k Points for Singles @ Qantas Insurance

220

It's "compare your insurance policy" time of year, as the new rates go up April 1st, generally. So Qantas is pulling out the big guns and offering up to 120,000 points depending on your situation for switching to their insurance.

EDIT: one user has described a 'hack' to pay less, and still earn the max 120k points. At your own risk of course.

Edit 2: Thanks to chickenface: Points will be credited over 9 months, in 8 equal monthly instalments which will commence after the policy has been held for 60 continuous days. To receive each instalment of the Qantas Points, the qualifying premium must remain the same and payments must be paid up to date.

Note that you can also earn points just by walking/cycling/swimming/sleeping using their Wellness app, from which you earn even more points if you're an insurance member.

(disclaimer, have previously worked on their team years ago, no longer affiliated, just think it's a quality product).

From their email:

"Join thousands of Australians who have already made the switch to Qantas Health Insurance since it launched in 2016. In that time our members have been rewarded with over 2.5 billion Qantas Points^ - that’s equivalent to around 8,500 return Business Class flights from Melbourne to London (plus taxes, fees and carrier charges).~

Now it’s your turn
Make the switch to Qantas Health Insurance and you could be planning your next holiday sooner. Earn up to 120,000 Qantas Points* for couples, families, and single parents covers or up to 60,000 Qantas Points* for singles cover, when you sign up by 5 April. So where could you go?"

Insurance is underwritten by NIB.

OF course, do your research first. For me the difference between it and the other best policy for me was about $8 a year, and I get Qantas points with this one, so a no brainer.

To calculate how many points, see this chart.

  • Anyone already been with them have any review?

    • If you get a good review can we count you in? :)

    • +2

OP - I have. I claimed more than I spent, so I was pretty happy, plus points :)

  • +4

Seems very expensive for a similar return as with competitors. Up to $120k points is also misleading as that would require you to take the top of line cover and top of the line extras which is quite expensive.

  • +2

120K points is for combined Gold Hospital and Top Extras Cover. For "mid" tier hospital and extras you only get 30K points

  • -1

Expensive, and switching health insurers to earn points is a poor idea.
I can picture myself unwell without the ideal health insurance policy and regretting selling out for a bunch of points.

  • +10

i have been on the qantas lowest cover from day 0 to day 57 and upgraded to top on day 58, i can confirm i received 120k points

    • thanks for the info mate, hope leeroys doing well

      • The leeroys better not be telling stories.

    • +1

You sir… are the Ozbargainer of the month

    • Couldn't find details on this condition.

You only need today hold highest cover on day 58?

      • +1

day 60, but i didn't want to take any chances :)

        • Did you count 58 business days or days including sat and sunday/public holidays

    • +1

      GENIUS.

    • +1

How did you upgrade from lowest to highest? Online?

      • Just call them (I used to work there). Takes minutes.

    • Excellent, did you cancel/switch/downgrade after two days (day 60) or once you got your points?
Thought you already redeemed the offer once you joined the lowest (assuming you already pocketed the points)

      • once i got my points, which i think was day 61 or 62

    • +1

      this is from teh T&C

Points will only be awarded to the primary policyholder after the policy has been held for 60 continuous days and will be based on the level of cover held at that time.

    • Were you on both extras and hospital cover?

    • I tried this… However changed on day 59 and did not get the higher points so must change a couple days before

    • Seems like they pay the points in installments now and you have to maintain cover?

Points will be credited over 9 months, in 8 equal monthly instalments which will commence after the policy has been held for 60 continuous days. To receive each instalment of the Qantas Points, the qualifying premium must remain the same and payments must be paid up to date.

      • Not going to bother anymore then.. damn.. loophole closed

        • +2

No this is wrong. Those T&C are from the LIFE insurance policy terms and it has always been that way since their 2nd promotion (the first they stuffed up and gave away lots of points too)

          • @leeroys_dad: Hey I'm glad to be proven wrong. I thought they changed the deal, the fact they list health life and travel insurance deals on one page doesn't make it very clear.

            • @[Deactivated]: no worries, it is confusing - agreed

              • +1

@leeroys_dad: just got my 60k points. (plus 5k referral) then rang up and reversed the policy upgrade under the cooling off lol. now to churn somewhere else.

  • 8k points for my quote. Where the hell did you get 60k from?

    • Depends what levels you choose. However, ozbargain hack - look for Leeroys-dad comment above on how to get the max.

  • OP, you might want to include this link to your post: https://files.ozbargain.com.au/upload/71705/77831/capture.jp…

  • When you hover over 'Sign on Bonus' it gives you this notice:

"Qantas Points you could earn for joining Qantas Health Insurance with the selected cover/s. You will not be eligible for Qantas Points on sign up if you have an existing health insurance policy with Qantas or are switching from nib, AAMI, Apia, GU Health, or Suncorp."

Would be interested to know if someone switching from these providers get the bonus still.

    • +1

no you won't. they all use teh same backend system (NIB) and they'll know

      • So if you cancel and then sign up 1 year later would you be entitled to bonus points?

        • yep, i think they state in T&C 6 months from memory

          • @leeroys_dad: Hi.. Might be a dumb question

For a couples cover do they check eligibility of both policyholder and spouse?

My wife was a customer from NIB, cancelled less than 6 months ago, so by right she is not eligible.

What if I'm the primary policyholder, and she is secondary? The T&C says the points will be awarded to primary policyholder if eligibility is met. And eligibility criteria doesn't specify eligibility from both policyholders

Is this a bit of a stretch? :')

            • @b0b0: i think you are safe mate. not 100% positive though. i had the same thought going through my mind and i would have done it for myself, but then i realised i was with Qantas 10 months ago and the T&C state 6 months, so i used my details again instead of my wife's details. but the risk vs reward is worth doing my friend! do it using the hack and report back :)

  • -2

Deal for Qantas, not for the policy holder.

  • You can sign up with a referral and get an extra 5k points on top. I did it by email a few days after I joined but you can do it by phone at the time you take out insurance too

  • I switched to Qantas health a couple of years ago, from Bupa. Bupa immediately started calling me and offered me lower rates, as well as free time in the beginning if I stayed on. So I stayed with Bupa, but with their recently announced rate hike from Apr 1, I think I will switch again. See how they react this time.

    • Just call and speak to the retention team, they can help you with deals

  • Got quoted 4k points lol - what a waste of time.

  • Anyone know if you take out a policy as a couple do you both get the same extras limit?

    • you each get a limit to use up e.g. $150 each

  • Also note you can pay with Qantas points, might be of interest to some, on my quote (lowest family cover) 1000 points = $13.70 weekly payment.

  • Let me make sure I do this correctly or else it'll be a waste of money trying to get the 120k. You will need to select SWITCH in order to get this deal right?

    • Disclaimers
      Important information
1 Qantas Frequent Flyer members who purchase a Qantas Health Insurance policy between 17 February and 11:59pm AEST 5 April 2020 will earn up to 120,000 sign on Qantas Points. During this time 120,000 is the maximum number of sign on Qantas Points that can be earned upon purchase of combined Gold Hospital and Top Extras Cover for Couples, Single Parents or Families. Each Qantas Health Insurance policy has a maximum number of points that can be earned upon purchase, which can be found here. Points will only be awarded to the primary policyholder after the policy has been held for 60 continuous days and will be based on the level of cover held at that time.

      • So what you’re saying is you can purchase a new policy and still qualify for bonus points?

        • That's what it says, isn't it?

          • @ronnknee: Just needs to be sure, as it’s $500 for the two months to test it out.

  • So can I confirm if I pay for the basic ~$7 pw for the first 8 weeks / 56 days (just $50) then upgrade to the top extras & hospital cover for just that week $70 I will get 60,000 Qantas points?!
Because if that's right I'm only paying ~$120 for 60,000 Qantas points which is a really good deal.

    • Nope that doesn't work. Looks like you need to buy both basic hospital and extras because if you leave buying extras until the last few days you will have a 2 month wait for the cover.

      • How do you know it doesn't work? I assume you only just joined?

      • yeah im confused too.

old mate the dad of leeroy has said that you could go from any cover to any and be eligible

        • It's in the first disclaimer / t&cs you see

      • +1

When I say it doesn't work I obviously mean without buying extras at the same time. You need to buy the basic hospital and basic extras or else the waiting period for the extras is 2 months without doing it on this current promo.

        • So you're purely referring to wait periods if you actually want to keep the cover??

To get the points you can go from any any to any?

          • @ssjmark: No. I'm saying that if you didn't get the both basic options at the start (within this promo period) it says there is a 2 month wait period for the extras. If this is the case then your level of cover at the time of 60 days wouldn't include the extras because of the wait period?

            • @obavatar: The 2 month waiting period is in reference to the time you need to wait before making a claim. Its a seperated disclaimer from 1 (qantas points)

Ambulance cover waiting period is also 1 day.

  • Looks like others are also a bit cautious trying it out themselves. Base family cover is almost a $300 gamble.

    • +1

i did it last year, doing it again now. i work in the health insurnace industry so i know all the tricks :)

      • Can you go from lowest single cover to max family cover??

Or does it have to go from base family to max family?

      • I can't/shouldn't have two private hospitals covers should I?

  • +1

    Anything to anything

    • awesome!

  • The update that this deal has expired is wrong. Those T&C are from the LIFE insurance policy terms and it has always been that way since their 2nd promotion (the first they stuffed up and gave away lots of points too)

Just an update for anyone following.

1 March I signed up for bronze hosp and basic extras family policy.
26 April I switched to top hosp and gold extras (about day 55).
On day 62 (actually very late in day 61) I was given points according to the policy I held on day 60 which was top hosp and gold extras (120k points)

It cost me about $500 in premiums for the 1.8 months of basic cover and 0.2 month, which is about $50 more than what I would normally pay for health cover

    • +1

      good to hear!

but i went with basic hosp singles cover, no extras. planning to change to family top hosp and extras on day 55.
was hoping this will work off the back of your advice earlier.

      • Are you on day 55 yet? I did a similar thing, just basic hospital singles with no extra. Doesn't look like you can 'change' extras without buying it first, not sure if buying it now is a little late?

        • not on day 55 yet.

did you call to change your cover?

          • @ssjmark: I just changed online, after logging into my account. Can only change to different hospital cover, not hospital + extras.

            • @Ughhh: Just call them up, add the extras as well. They can do that for you

              • @leeroys_dad: Will the added extras be counted towards the 60 days though?

                Thanks for the updates btw

                • @Ughhh: Yes, you will be awarded points based on whatever product you have on day 60

                  • @leeroys_dad: Unfortunately it didn't work for me. Changed it on day 58, points only transferred on day 63 and no extra points. Maybe day 58 was cutting close.

                    • @runamuck: Ooh.. sucks. That's disheartening

                      Did you dispute it?

                      • @ssjmark: No didnt dispute. Couldn't be bothered. Changed back to the lower cover.

                        • @runamuck: Bugger mate, that sucks. On the day you joined, did you start the cover on the same day? With their system and a lot of other health insurer systems these 2 dates get confused when reports are run.

My guess is you started cover 2 days after you joined and they are using the incorrect date (join date, not cover start date) when they report on it to allocate points

  • I think they might have fixed the loophole.

I joined on 11 March and my cover started on 12 March, upgraded hosp+extras on the 8 May, points credited last night (12 March) but no extra points, only the points as per the original cover.

    • extremely disappointing as the conditions say points are calculated based on the cover on day 60 right?

      • +1

Bugger, maybe day 58 is pushing it because 11 March to 8 May is 59 days (inclusive), depending on the times systems are synced/run/updated etc, it may just miss the cut off. i did mine on about day 53, i can't imagine they would have altered the way they run the points calc within the last few weeks.

Whoever is coming up next to switch to H&E it would be worth trying day 55 or so and testing it

        • I called their customer service and the agent started searching for campaign that was applicable at the time of my joining. She however didn't realise that I upgraded the cover only a few days ago. As she couldn't find the previous promotions, she escalated the issue further to another department and promised to call me back with her findings. Let's see what's the outcome, I'm having no expectations.

PS: Yeah I do agree that I might have left it till the last minute, should have upgraded the cover on the 57th day.
