Worth Buying Second Hand PS4?

My PS4 died last week. I don't play it that much since the Switch is my main console for now but I've still got 3-4 games on my backlog I wanted to play.

There's no confirmation yet but apparently the Ps5 is coming in November. That means I'll only be using the PS4 for about 8 months. Do you reckon its worth buying a second hand cheap one to fill that gap? Gumtree has a few listing for $200-250.

Nope - If you dont really use it, dont bother replacing it. Switch can fill the void until you want to upgrade.

      FF7 comes out next month

      switch isnt filling that void

    • There's plenty on the Switch to keep you occupied for at least a few months.
I think this is the best move.

November is still some time to go. Get a used PS4 pro. You find it in Gumtree/FB Marketplace from $300 to $400. Pair it with Playstation VR for added fun.

Look up common failure problems and fixes on youtube and try to fix yours first, it could be something really simple and cheap to fix, the original PS4's were poorly designed.

That being said, there are a lot of really good games coming soon, if you don't really care about playing them straight away just wait, but personally games like Cyberpunk and Last of Us II would make me more inclined to buy a new PS4 if i was in your position. You can always sell it before the PS5 comes out and make some money back.

tronicsfix is awesome, makes great videos and makes repairs look common and easy.

    • I've fixed a few things using an old knive and a stove as a soldering … thing.

Currently 2 for 2 on attempts to fix things.

      And I don't understand diddlysquat.

I would suggest learning what capacitors look like and how to short them because they can hold 240v for a really long period which can be discharged into you if you don't discharge them another way.

  • Are you planning to pick up the PS5 at launch? There is also a very real possibility that the launch will be delayed due to COVID-19.

    • Are you planning to pick up the PS5 at launch?

This goes against OzBargain values :D

      • Looked up past deals on it, and launch deals for the current PS4 were around $500 in December '13 - January '14.

Though not sure what current inflation etc will cause.

If it's $500-550, that's not bad for new-gen tech, compared to $300-350 for current prices.

        • Good point but PS4 launch date in Australia was 29th Nov with a RRP $549. So good deals only start appearing few weeks after? Not to mention Xbox One also launched in Nov 2019 and Christmas deals probably played a factor in the PS4 deals seen in Dec'13 to Jan'14?

@trex: Looks like supply was an issue when it launched, with pre-orders in December saying late January arrival, people posting confirming that stores had stock later on etc.

And I guess that's the thing, if the new-gen consoles try to chase pre-Christmas orders, there's every chance you won't get hands on 1 till Jan/Feb 2021.

            • @spackbace: FFS I didn't think of that. No way I can wait that long. If I can find a cheap second hand console (<$200) I'll go for it because waiting any more than 8 months to start my backlog is not gonna happen.

Don't think I'll be getting on launch unless some huge exclusive games come early on.

    • sad thing is that Microsoft definitely wouldn't do that and it'd give them a massive jump on next gen

      • Why wouldn't Xbox suffer from delayed launch too? They're both manufactured in China

        • It won't be due to production, it'll be due to their paranoia, just like PAX East

    • There is also a very real possibility that the launch will be delayed due to COVID-19.

Infection rates are slowing down signicantly in China.

Take it to your local repair shop and get a free quote.

As ColstonAUS said, it might be a simple $50 fix.

  • Use the switch and hold off for PS5. Your PS4 games should be able to load on the PS5 but that hasn’t been confirmed. Don’t be surprised if the PS5 is pushed back to next year following the delays in getting Chinese factories back into full production.

Pretty sure PS5 has confirmed backwards compatibility with PS4

      • It depends on how they do the backwards compatibility though, if it is hardware based it will be fine, but if it is software based there could be a wait on the developers to develop the capability similar to what Microsoft has been doing this generation. Some devs might outright refuse to do so as they will re release the game for PS5 for more revenue. Rumors have it PlayStation are already having costing problems with their PS5 so i doubt the back compat will be hardware based.

  • If all other avenues lead nowhere, go to EB Games and utilize their EB Reboot Service. For $20 they'll see whether your console can be fixed or not and only when it returns working with a full report you are required to pay the remaining amount ($130-$150).

Coles and Woolies are out of stock of these. Sorry OP.

  • Yes buy a new one and recoup the cost

  • -1

Buy a 2nd hand one but not at the crazy prices people have up most of the time ($200-300, ffs Amazon had new ones cheaper than that before xmas)
I scored a slim for $100 a few weeks back, was missing the hard drive cover and disc loading isnt perfect. Probably just a bent sheet metal plate over disc drive (easy fix as per YouTube), new cover was $6 on ebay.
Keep in mind they will probably do trade in deals when the next gen comes on the market to encourage people to upgrade.

  • Go for the new PS5
