Mobile Number When Opening a Bank Account

Can I use a SIM card not registered to me as my mobile phone number when opening a bank account?

I don't own a phone and was going to use my girlfriends phone number on my application.

Yes you can, but what if you have a messy break up? The number will likely be used to contact you and also 2FA.

      • +52

        I've definitely heard that before!😅

No problems means problems. No relationship is perfect.

        • +1

I think you mean no relationship is secure.

      • +1

        First love ?

        • With promise rings to match

  • as pointed out, it is probably not a good idea

    • +1

      I know it's not ideal but I don't want a phone.

      • Why not?

Edit: Is this you, Ed Sheeran?

      • +9

Then why do you need a bank account?

      • +1

Buy a pre-paid simcard, stick in her phone, activate the service. Take it out of the phone, put it in a drawer until you next need it.

  • +3

You can get a mobile number for $15 a year from amaysim.

  • -8

    I don't own a phone.

  • +3

Get your own prepaid SIM with long expiry to use in your gfs phone.

      • +2

You just need to keep the SIM active.

  • +1

When you sign up, they will most likely send a SMS for you to validate as a multi-factor authentication.
If you plan to use mobile banking -> you will most likely need your own phone (and sim). You can kind of get away without using a SIM once you turn on push notifications for MFA, etc.

Online banking, purchasing stuff with a credit card, etc, is going to be pretty inconvenient if you don't have your own phone.

Are you expecting to use her phone when checking balances, paying bills, etc?
Or do you want her to unlock her phone and move money around on your behalf?

    • -7

I plan to use mobile banking, make purchases, etc

I don't have to check my balance and my girlfriend pays the bills.

      • +1

Do you mean internet banking? mobile banking requires you to have a mobile phone?

        • -4

It's the moderator being a troll. Originally it read "I plan to use internet banking, make purchases, etc"

    • I will make a bank that doesn't need phone number, he can be my customer.

  • +36

Didn't you already get your answer over on whirlpool? Why the need to ask the question multiple times on the internet?

(Yes, they joined OzBargain just to ask this question …)

    • -5

I got three answers to my question over at Whirlpool, and all three were different answers. Which one do I go with?

The others aren't answering my question, they're just giving an option on other matters.

I always get pulled up by the cross-post Police, so I've always got a answer ready;)

  • +3

OP don't like phones, only use typewriters, you should open a cheque account.
It will be nightmare to open a account from one of the major banks without a phone.

    • -1

A bank is a bank. I don't need an account with a major bank.

  • +1

    I don't own a phone

I would like to know more, can you elaborate? How and why?

    • -6

I've always disliked phones because that means I'm at everyones beckoning. I'm also expected to answer the phone or return calls in a timely fashion, like people expect me to carry a phone around wherever I go so they can get in touch with me. A phone is a complication in my life that I don't need.

I know in today's world a phone number is required for almost everything but I'm not like the rest of the sheep, I refuse to be a slave to the phone. I like my freedom.

      • +11

Put the phone on do not disturb.

      • My man, I wish I could be like you.

      • +2

Using that logic, aren't we all slaves to money?

      • +37

        I like my freedom

        but has gf

        • +1

So when he out having fun with boys, gf can't disturb him, brilliant.

      • +2

But yet you're fine with being a slave to a financial corporation?

If you really like freedom there's only one solution. Cash.

      • +17

This post shows that not having a phone is making your life more complicated. Even if you have a phone you don't have to make/return calls unless you want to. Sounds like you're being a slave to what you think people expect of you.
Also if you buy a phone, you can literally just turn it off and leave it in a drawer until you need it. That's pretty free

      • I used to have the same views about 20 years ago. Now I just have my phone on silent all the time. If you were in a life-threatening situation, you'd probably wish you had a phone on you.

      • Don't give your number to anybody

      • +1

OP needs therapy more than he needs a bank account.

I mean… Yeah! You go get 'em! Fight the system!

  • I'm not a big fan of technology but OP just get a phone. It's pretty hard to get by without one, you don't have to give your number out to people you don't want to just to places like the bank, your doctor, job interviews, your parents/siblings etc.

      • +1

So you don't have a car, fridge or computer like the rest of the crowd too?

        • -4

          I don't own a car or fridge. I do own a laptop.

          • +8

@BorntotheBays: Then you don't (profanity) need a bank. Use cash or crypto.

Signing up to a bank is just another "way of the sheep".

      • +23

Come on dude, not owning a phone doesn't make you special. You are in control of the phone, not it of you. You don't have to tell anyone about it if you don't want to, or rather tell people you don't usually check your phone, it'll be fine.

In the end of the day it's just a tool, like a fork. Where you want to stick it is totally up to you.

          • @BorntotheBays: Then why dont you get an old Nokia? Genuinely curious. No internet just to send and receive texts such as 2FA.

  • +7

Surely you should just check with the bank!?

Or was the purpose of this post simply to repeatedly tell people how “woke” you are by not having a noble phone like the rest of the “sheep”?

    I suspect the latter

    • -1

I sent the bank an email.

      • +5

mate just get a cheap one for this exact purpose you have posted.
chuck it in the drawer until you need it again,
get a SIM with long expiry ~365 days and throw a couple bucks in there

calling us sheep, when you are a mosquito

  • +2

Good luck doing a bank transfer when the bank sends an sms with the secret code. Your GF will need to call you with the code but wait, you don't have a phone!

You do know that you are in control of your mobile phone. You don't answer if you don't want to and don't give your number to people. Problem solved.

      • +9

Don't give your number out to anyone except the bank you sign up with?

If it rings, don't answer it?

        • +7

Too much common sense John Kimble.

Plus and this is the most important part for the OP troll… if he does that he can’t smugly go around looking down his nose at the “sheep” and telling them how he is more “free” than them because he doesn’t have a phone

  • How do you do sexting?

  • +1

    Lol…phones do suck , I must admit

    • +4

You've been using your vacuum to make calls and texts.

  • +1

HSBC use some annoying security device instead, you could ask them if you can sign up without a mobile number and maybe use landline instead.

    • I think they have that 2 factor device. I'll ask HSBC tomorrow.

  • +3

this is such a weird post. the fact that you waste this much energy asking this and you asked it on WP lmao

    • -1

It took 5 seconds to make the OP, I just copy/pasted from WP.

  • +8

So what I’ve learned from this post.

    Owning a Phone = sell out/sheep

Owning a Computer/laptop = nonconformist bad boy sticking it to modern society and the man.

Damn, im only half way to been a bad boy.

  • +5

Just get the money put in your girlfriends account.

    • -2

(profanity) man, my money will be spent on $1,000 dollar Gucci sunglasses and shit, if I did that.

      • +25

Sounds like a solid relationship with no problems there

  • +1

Why you use an email account? You expect to answer emails and give it out when people ask for it. Only difference is no ringtone to emails. But phone u can keep in silent mode.

    • -5

Nobody uses email, not really anyway. At least not for daily comms.

Some people don't check their emails for weeks, so there is no high expectation to return emails in a timely manner.

      • +3

Isn't it better stick to regular australia post mail then?

      • +3

Nobody uses email, not really anyway

WTF? Is this thread set in the 1980's?

  • +2

You are in 2020. A lot of services require you to use a mobile to verify payment etc.

May I ask how old are you? I just cannot believe someone wouldn’t wanna use a phone in this day and age

    • +3

why are you still bothering to ask him these questions? Like the others have said, he could literally just buy a prepaid sim (and a cheap phone if he decides to), and just never even switch on the phone. He could even throw away the sim card that is registered under his name, and it still means he won't have a phone yet in his mind that's not the case.

    • -3

      40.

Almost no services require the use of a mobile to verify payment. I think you're talking about 2FA.

  • +1

Everyone tell the OP to get a phone is missing the point. His full selection of tin-foil hats makes his house a faraday cage anyway.

  • +3

Bet you OP is unemployed as well. Because it is sheepish to go to work, EVERYBODY goes to work… just not OP. Because he's DIFFERENT.

    • +2

      Someone should show OP this…

      https://imgur.com/a/W5Eimhh

but he probably wouldn't click on it as that would be too conformist

    • -1

Correct I am unemployed. I'm co-owner/silent partner in a tiling company and a home renovation company. I don't need to go to work.

  • +1

Make your own decisions then learn from your mistakes

  • Get a cheap prepaid phone from the supermarket. Leave it in a draw at home and don’t tell people you have one.

    Use it for 2FA, etc

  • +1

Does anyone else find this a little suspicious….?

    • +3

Suspicious? I don't find it suspcious, more obnoxious. There is no shortage of trolls or self righteous folk on the internet
