Have been listening to Nick Loper’s Side Hustle podcast for years now, so I was surprised to find his latest eBook is currently free. The podcast has a tonne of value for those who want to pursue a side hustle to their full time job - hopefully the eBook is of good value to you too.

Mod: This book was released March 9, 2015 for US $0.99. It has been free since May 5, 2015. Apparently updated in 2019. Marked as long running deal, not appropriate to be reposted in the future.

$12k isn't much when you're on $350,000p/a like me. No thanks, I like my free time.

I have just finished the book after seeing this post. Very good guide for entrepreneurship, not only for side hustles but also for general business building. A little bit out of date since ChatGPT changes the game.

Still recommended to read. There are golds in it if you are not willing to only stay in a 9-5 job.

  • I would certainly hope that my spare time is worth more than 12k P/a

Anyone made any progress through this so far?

  • Are there any places where I can work as a backend software dev over weekends under a structured team?

    1. Choose a Business Model:
Selling a Service: Quickest to start, leverage existing skills (think freelance writing, graphic design, virtual assistant).
Selling a Product: Potentially more scalable but requires sourcing or creating products (physical or digital like e-books, online courses).
Selling an Audience: Build a following (blog, YouTube, podcast) and monetize through ads, affiliate marketing, or selling your own products/services.

    2. Generate Business Ideas:
Rip, Pivot, and Jam: Copy a successful model but adapt it to a new industry.
Sniper Method: Focus on a very specific niche market.
Shovels in the Gold Rush: Provide services to people caught up in a hot trend.
Intersection Method: Find ideas at the intersection of your skills, interests, and network.
Scratch-Your-Own-Itch: Solve a problem you face, others probably have it too.
"Expert Enough": What are you good at that people ask for your help with? Teach it!
Probing-for-Pain: Interview business owners to uncover their biggest challenges.

    3. Get Started!
For Services: Identify your skills, find clients (your network, marketplaces, strategic partnerships).
For Products: Validate demand, source inventory or create digital products, choose selling platform (Amazon, your own website).
For Audiences: Create valuable content consistently, market it (SEO, social media, guest appearances), monetize strategically (ads, affiliate marketing, your own offers).

    Key Principles:
Start Small: No need for a grand, innovative idea. Start simple and build momentum.
Create Value: Focus on solving problems and providing real value to your customers or audience.
Learn and Adapt: Be willing to learn new skills, experiment, and adjust your approach as you go.

And have made it turn into their side hustle.

You have a big audience on ozbargin. And you have knowledge of a product/demand.

You can leverage this to connections with businesses.

    • Can you elaborate further?

My Side Hustle is Data Annotation Tech. They pay about 40USD/hr for tasks requiring specialist knowledge (e.g. Software Development or Mathematics) and about 20USD an hour otherwise. That works out to about 30-60AUD/hr, which isn't bad if you have an hour with nothing better to do. The tasks all involve filling in web forms, no need to recruit your friends into any MLM. Pretty much anyone who works for them can give you a referral code, but it is probably easier to just sign up directly. Best of all it is Not A Scam :).

  • My main job is in IT so i'm permanent WFH anyway. But I do have a few side earners.

Dog sitting: Essential to get the initial good reviews. I get enquiries everyday now. Try and turn repeat customers into cashies to avoid platform overhead fees and the taxman.
Rent out driveway: This used to be a good earner before covid. Not so popular after. Same as above with repeat customers.
Kaffir leaves: I have a large tree in the backyard so I supply to a local Thai restaurant for cash every 5 days.
