Entry level components but ain too bad for the price. Definitely not worth RRP 749 when you can get 9 speed slightly better components with hydraulic disc brakes from Giant.

You're in the ball park with this bike for price. If you're starting this would be good - it has the full spoke count; something you'll be thankful for when you're running down steps. It would be nice to see the geometry on this, just out of curiosity. 8 speed is fine. The one piece front chain ring is a hastle - I'd want to take off the big ring. The only significant advantage of more gears (10x and greater) is the clutch in the rear derailer. I've bought after market chain guides which are awesome - I use them on my more serious bikes too because it stops the chain flying up and down which they still do with the clutch. 2 x 8 is fine; that's what I use on my urban clunker. Mechanical brakes are OK; a lot easier to look after, good for a clunker. This is basically the same as my first mtb that I bought from anaconda - heavy and cheap but great to learn on and practise skills. Mine is now used for urban activities, shopping etc where I might leave it locked outside a shop. Here's a video showing how to make a chain guide out of the reflector bracket that will come on the bike. I have after market chain guide, but the same design type. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AS1jQ9qJ_uQ

The equivalent giant is still 8 speed, but only 2 chain rings which is nicer, and a good gear range! But more expensive @ $679. The giant is definitely old school geometry - I'm guessing the fuji is too. They're short length ways (reach and top tube length, head angle). Great to practice tight manoeuvring though. If they were both the same price I'd go for the giant, as it is, I don't know.

Just had a quick eyeball of the talon3 from wtfnodeal's link - it looks slighty better geo, but more expensive again. It still has the same good gear range as the other giant - I'd pick the talon out of the two giants.

There's also the Trek Marlin 6 which with Bupa members, get 10% off. So it's $675 (in the middle of the Giant Talon 3 and this Fuji) and a better bike all around. Better wheels than the Giant, same fork, better Geo and better warranty on the frame too. Plus they now have 3 year transferable warranty if you outgrow the bike and sell it.
