American Express Qantas Ultimate Card - 100,000 Bonus Qantas Points ($450 Annual Fee w/ $450 Qantas Travel Credit) » All Comments

  • +26

I'd suggest people who do apply used a referral link as a fellow ozbargainer will get a points bonus. It is the same deal for using a referral.

    • Looks like they increased the referral bonus from 40k to 60k points per referral. Valid until 22nd April

      • where can I find a referral?

        • Referral links below the original post.

Or did you want to get your unique referral link to refer others?

          • @firestint: I saw those but they are for David Jones cards only yeah? What about referrals to the Qantas Ultimate card

    • So just to clarify, the referer and referee both get 60k extra points?

      • +1

no the referer get 60k and referee gets 100k

        • +1

That is a hefty bonus for a referer

        • do you get referral points + bonus 100k points?

    • So i forgot to click through with a referral link. Is it possible to send an email to amex with a referral link and get it added after the fact?

      • It won't affect you since the referee receives 100k regardless

        • I know, but the referrer is my parter :) So i want her to get the points

  • +4

Please note that although it states "Card Members who currently hold or who have previously held any Card product issued by American Express Australia Limited, … are ineligible for the bonus Qantas Points offer" this has not been applicable in the past if the only card you held was a David Jones Amex or Westpac Black/Platinum Amex.

But always double check with live chat if this still applies

    • I just called a rep, can confirm Westpac Amex does not count. I told the rep I couldn't remember when I closed my Amex account so I wasn't sure of my eligibility. She looked at my account, and said that I was eligible based on my Westpac being a bank issued card and therefore excluded and it had been >18 months since I cancelled my previous Amex card.

I cancelled a Westpac Platinum 12 months ago, and the Qantas Ultimate 19months ago.

  • +1

I still have 6 months left on my 18 month period :(

Does this mean you are getting one for the sign up bonus and then cancelling it in order to get a new one in 1.5 years? That sounds like a lot of hassle. And you are not earning points in those 1.5 years.

    • +13

This is why you churn through cards throughout the year to ensure you're maximising the points. On average, I go through 4 different cards a year to obtain the sign-on bonus + everyday transaction points. By the time you cycle around the following year (provided you cancel it after the points are credited), you will be eligible to sign on again as a new customer. Rinse and repeat! :)

      • -1

This can't be good for your credit rating…

        • +9

Of course it’s not good for your credit rating but ask yourself how often are you taking out a mortgage or a personal loan?

        • +7

it has very little impact on your credit rating unless you do it to ridiculous levels. Not that your credit rating actually means much in Australia anyway.

        • +2

Ive been churning for nearly three years , have easily accrued over half a million QFFs and credit rating has steadily increased (mid 800s now) I dont have a lot of money but I pay for everything with the card and religiously pay it off straight away.
We are off to the Gold Coast for the weekend later this month , flights up on Amex $450 voucher , hotel pretty much half price thanks to Velocity points , then QFF to get home.

          • +1

@WonderboyJim: Wow you pay for hotels using airline points? How are the conversion? Would have thought it'll be bad.

            • @nightelves: The rate varies. It can be quite good.

            • @nightelves: It was with my girlfriends Velocity points. She gets them from coles shopping. We used about 20k points and it brought the hotel down from $120 ish a night to about 70 something I think - for two nights! Theres always a bit to pay, same with the Qantas flights , you still pay taxes of $30 each per trip.

        • +1

It can actually improve your rating!

        • +4

Exactly what gromit said - little impact unless done at ridiculous levels. My credit rating is hovering just above 800 (inclusive of my credit card applications + 2 mortgages). Every card I apply for, my wife applies for the same so we can truly reap the benefit.

As a result, we're heading overseas at the end of March with the flights redeemed via Qantas FF. 2x First Class tickets from Sydney to London via Singapore on Qantas + 2x First Class tickets from Paris to Sydney via Dubai on Emirates.

          • +1

@daiguren: Did you do round the world first class awards redemption or just straight redemption?

            • @nightelves: Straight redemption.

              • @daiguren: Wow must have cost more than doing round the world on awards redemption.

                • +1

                  @nightelves: Easier to book however….

                • @nightelves: Haha, I wouldn't know. I'm sure a round the world trip with points in economy would have been easy (high availability). Business/First Class - not so much. There isn't an abundance of seats available throughout the year, particularly if people are after specific travel dates (and if you're only after traveling on specific airlines!).

                • @nightelves: You can't book Emirates flights on the round the world first, which is one of the better first class services especially on the A380. Also the rtw is notoriously hard to find availability for and most people can't take the amount of time required to make it truly worth it (at least 2 months imo).

                  • @spiff: yes it is a lot of effort to do it, takes research, time and more important a great deal of itinerary flexibility when booking and ability to book 10-11 months in advance. their are lots of good tricks to finding the available seats like signing up to other international airlines like BA so you can use their search for various legs etc.

                    • @gromit: From what I've researched the Business RTW is a lot easier to book than the First RTW but you still need to have a lot of flexibilty and time as you mentioned. Looking at photos and videos of Qantas and BA First Class it doesn't look much better than the Business Class on Singapore/Emirates A380 so to me, flying First on those airlines isn't worth the points.

                      • @spiff: it is definitely better than business, the room in the first class is amazing, used points for first class 2 years ago for my US/Canada japan trip. My wife was able to join me in my first class seat for dinner at my table. I am also just over 6 foot 4 so I notice the extra space probably a lot more than most as business is still quite cramped for me with the bed not long enough and the shoulder room inadequate.

                        • @gromit: Awesome, which airline?

                          • @spiff: for the dinner in my seat with wife. That was actually Qantas leg from Sydney to Dallas.

                            • -1

@gromit: Can definitely see how being taller even business class isn't enough height. Basically the only time it pays for me not to be tall :D

                              • +1

@spiff: yep, flights are one of the times I am truly envious of those with normal size shoulders and average height. It really sucks when even Business class is pretty damn uncomfortable, I can't even sleep flat on the flat beds due to the stupid head/shoulder area that is too narrow (though still light years ahead of economy where I find I usually struggle to walk afterwards due to my knees being hard against the seat in front.)

                                • @gromit: You can probably see why I'm picky with first class redemptions then since space isn't an issue at 5 10. The experience in Emirates FC was surreal but totally an over the top indulgence and would rather spend future points in business. With the exception of Singapore Airlines and FC suite which will probably take like 8 years to save up for considering the scarcity and devaluation of VFF points.

                                  • +1

@spiff: yep even with the extra room I usually would not spend the extra points of first class either. But we did have to at least try it for one holiday and we had a couple of million points so still plenty left afterwards :-)

      • I'm interested to know exactly what is involved with chruning. Do you guys have specific examples at all? At the moment, i'm hesitant to give up my ANZ travel rewards card as it gets me a free domestic flight per year.. and i only pay $45 per year as the card fee is included within my mortgage with ANZ. I've actually really liked the card, but have always been worried about 'ruining' my credit rating too. I am looking at purchasing a property within the next year, so don't want a silly credit card affecting that either.

If i can travel first class anywhere from points, that would be amazing. I also don't have too much of a spend on my current credit card. If anyone could PM me with some more information, or just reply, that would be great! Thanks!

        • You can keep the ANZ Travel Adventures card as long as you are going to keep using the domestic flight each year. I say this for 3 reasons. 1) The bonus that comes with churning that particular card is Velocity points which is generally harder to earn than Qantas points. 2) Velocity redemption on Krisflyer (which is Velocitys best affiliate airline) has been devalued so not only is it hard to earn Velocity points but they're worth less, and 3) if you want to fly first Qantas points are better for redemption in terms of availability and value (for Emirates first class), even though they were also devalued recently. It should be easy to find cards to churn for QFF. ANZ frequent flyer, st George amplify, NAB signature, this Amex card are some of the better options available at the moment. It's up to you to decide what joining offers are decent value to you as you'd be hard pressed to find any deals with no annual fee these days. Start a spreadsheet to track opening and close dates, spend requirements etc.

          • +1

@spiff: Thanks for your reply. So how many credit cards would one have at a time and how quickly would you cancel? Do people only sign up to a new credit card if there is a $0 first year fee and a decent amount of sign up points?

The thing I also like about the ANZ travel rewards card is the no international fees.. It has seriously come in handy. I also love taking advantage of the free domestic flight. I have flown somewhere new in Australia each time. I try to choose expensive flights too e.g. Perth, Uluru and Darwin.

            • +1

@kimba88: How many credit cards at a time is dependent on how many spend requirements you can meet simultaneously. So it could mean you're running two offers at the same time if you have planned expenditure coming up. Like I said, there are hardly any $0 annual fee deals these days. I used to refuse to pay any annual fee and had a couple of quiet years in terms of churning but have since succumbed to the new reality. For me, I wouldn't consider any card above $150 annual fee (unless there are other benefits like a free domestic flight or travel credit) and I'd want at least 80k points for that kind of annual fee. But the value threshold is up to you to determine.

I also held the ANZ TA card for a few years to use the domestic flight but then realised I was taking that flight more out of obligation than need, and if collecting points is your priority, the 40-80k Velocity points that come with the ANZ TA is really handy. This will just mean taking that domestic flight every second year instead of every year.

            • @kimba88: Thanks for the insight guys. It helps. I'm trying to figure out approximately how many points would be required for a flight upgrade of business/first class. I'm assuming it's a lot more than 80000 points.

In regards to deals, I can't figure out which deal is better https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/474918 the westpac one has a lot more upvotes though.

        • +1

For me I keep one card which happens to be with my main bank, then every 12 months I cancel my other cards and pick up another two, whichever gives me the best sign up benefits. I ensure the cards I know I will churn I never use for subscriptions or automatic payments so that cancelling is relatively painless. currently I have ANZ and Qantas and will be cancelling both next month after I get back form holiday to pick up whatever works out best next. I have been doing this for years, it has had ZERO impact on my credit rating, currently listed as 865 with Experian.

So I generally have 2 or 3 cards at a time. One which I never change simply because it costs me nothing with my bank due to wealth package and has good benefits like travel insurance etc. then the other 2 I regularly churn. I keep a spreadsheet of when I signed up and cancelled so I know when to cancel and when I am eligible for the signup bonus again.

    • +5

Yep - welcome to the world of churning. No point for me in paying the annual fee for the minimal points I'd earn either.

  • When do you get the $450 QANTAS travel credit?

    • +2

You can use the travel credit straight away through their travel site and can only book Qantas flights.

      • I wonder if you book a classic reward seat, if you can use the travel credit to pay for the taxes part??

        • +4

Nope you can only book paid flights on their travel portal.

    • +2

It has to be used in one transaction and booked through AMEX travel. So it is really $450 off a flight.

    • +2

2ppl Mel to Gold Coast was $440 for reference. Same to Canberra , probably a little cheaper to Sydney but not much. All prices are full price so its pretty hard to find a good deal. My year is up next month , I wont be renewing.

      • Yeah I think the travel credit is pretty scammy. You have to use their booking system and certainly no access to good value fares. In some cases it looks like it's more expensive via AMEX travel than Qantas website.

        • It generally is , but not horribly so. The gold coast tickets Ive just bought would be more than 300 even through cheaper methods. so essentially the credit car annual fee is $150 , and for an amex , which gives lounge entry and a few discounts here and there is still pretty cheap.

    • I have got this card before. Last time the credit did not arrive until after the first statement (i.e. when you pay the $450 annual fee)

  • +8

    They occasionally do 120k deals.
I've signed up to this for first time Oct 2019.
The 450 credit is quite limited, with some inflated qantas prices, and needs to be used in one booking
Good points earner, esp with amex offers now and then though

  • +1

Not sure if this is the same deal which i signed up for a while back but the credit is actually to use through the AMEX travel site. Slightly annoying if you want to use points plus the credit to book something.

  • +1

i used those credit last time to buy a return ticket, it was around $550 out of pocket, but then if you book direct from the airline, whole ticket was also around $550 only.

  • Wasn't this 120k points a couple months ago?

    • -1

It was due to this and it's still running. Just follow through.

      • yeah nah I got 120k in Nov last year and wasn't a first time cardholder.

    • That offer finished in November 2019 and it's rarely higher than 100,00. If my 18 months was up I wouldn't be waiting around hoping to see the same 120,000 offer again. Better to act now and start earning points and perhaps even referral credits.

      • Says 31 March 2020 for me.

  • Hi OP, please state annual fee $450 is required

  • +1

18 Months is way too long :(

Imagine all the amex offers you'll miss along the way..

      • +2

You can churn through other banks' cards but the 18 month Amex restriction is long for what it is. You will definitely miss out on quite a few Amex perks.

        • +1

you might get more than 100k points worth of value over the 18 months but it's going to be a bigger pain in the ass.

  • +1

Literally just signed up for this before the deal came up, any chance they can change it?

    • Highly unlikely.

    • Same here; ah well :(

    • when did this deal come up? I just applied on Tuesday!

  • -6

    Amex is the absolute worst.
The worst customer service of any bank.

They put 2 credit infringements for a $100 purchase that I wasn't aware of (after I stopped using the card) on my profile because I chose not to give out my personal information when they called me.

    • +8

Surprising - I churn through the credit cards and have probably dealt with 10 different financial institutions - AMEX is easily the best customer service. Never even have to sit on hold trying to call!

      • +1

i had to solve two issues with amex..and it could be done via online chat..they were great 10/10, so far the best to deal with

    • What are credit infringements?

    • +19

      'Amex is the absolute worst.
The worst customer service of any bank.'

Clearly you have never dealt with Citi Bank.

In my experience AMEX is far better than any other financial institution to deal with.

      • +6

Just hearing the words Citi Bank sends chills up my spine. Every card and precious bonus point is a battle with them. Totally agree that Amex is #1

      • +1

As long as you don't screw up…

"Among financial services providers, American Express applied to make 119 people bankrupt, more than 10 times the number made bankrupt by the big four banks combined in the past financial year."….

        • Fair. If you cannot service your debts then don’t get a credit card.

      • Can confirm Citibank is the worst, their support line are the most clueless and dumbest support reps i've ever dealt with.

        • I found Citi better than Westpac!

  • How often do Amex velocity deals come around?

    • One expired yesterday. 100k velocity points and free return flight. $395 annual fee.

      • +1

I think I saw that one actually. The return flight is a bit bogus for me since it didn't allow Melb->Perth. Thanks for reminding me.

      • If you're referring to the Amex Velocity Platinum that annual fee is $375, not $395.

  • Does the income of $65k include rental income and dividends

    • +1

Yes. AMEX are very generous in their assessments.

      • +2

And very trusting too, didn't even ask for proof of income when I applied and was approved instantly on the spot!

        • +1

'didn't even ask for proof of income when I applied and was approved instantly on the spot'

This has happened to me as well.

  • +1

Any other cards with a big sign on bonus? Looks like NAB is the only option and Qantas but Qantas is giving it as 20k on a monthly basis (wit h minimum monthly spend). Can’t be bothered for monthly targets. Apart from NAB Is there anything else ?

    • +1

ANZ Frequent Flyer Black 120k QFF points sign on bonus

      • +1

ANZ rewards travel is worth getting if you're after Velocity points. Free domestic return tickets pretty much pay for the annual fee..

        • Also the lounge entry… One of the best value cards on the market.

      • Sorry should have mentioned it before. Currently have a Qantas Amex and ANZ black. Closing AmEX in a week And AnZ in July. NAB was closed last July so not eligible for any at the moment lol. Need to book some flights next month. So thought of getting a new one. Waiting for a St George promo. Haven’t had it for almost 3 years now… I think they were amplify platinum and they gave 80k points… They were really good with the lounge passes as well (I mean the process). Thanks for the suggestion though..

  • Anyone know if you can get a refund on the annual fee if you don't use the free flight?

    • +1

Very unlikely. They're counting on you not using the benefits after all.

    • Nope - get the bonus points, you pay the fee

    • Nope for sure ;)

  • any way to check out when we last joined them? I think I havent been with them for just over a year so hopefully im safe? unless its 18 months

    • +1

You could make a credit savvy account. It has a list of your old credit cards within a few years, along with their recorded close dates.

    • Just call them?

    • +2

I usually just search my emails for the last time I got a statement from X card. A more organised person would probably just make a note somewhere!

  • The travel credit is really hard to use, prices are way higher via the AMEX TRAVEL PORTAL (which you have to book through) vs anywhere else

    • I booked labour day (Vic) weekend in Cairns, hotels on sale on amex, same price as Agoda, beachfront room for 3 night's X $130 and sorted my own flights separately for cash.

    • +1

I booked an urgent trip to New Zealand last month. Price was virtually identical to qantas.com.

What I found though was if you’re booking for multiple people, you can’t mix and match checked baggage vs no checked baggage. I had to pay for checked baggage for everyone. Luckily that’s what I needed but YMMV.

      • Qantas offer everyone checked baggage included in their fare.

    • +2

Not in my experience. Used credit twice over the years and prices were exactly the same as Qantas website.

    • Sell it via ozb classifieds.

      • You can't sell it on here anymore, the classifieds section doesn't allow it after changes mid last-year (from memory) - that said, people can still posted 'wanted' ads for it, and you can reach out to them

*still trying to find a way to use (or flog) my own credit!

  • Does the income of $65k include rental income and dividends

    • Yes.

  • I'm still in my 18 month cooling-off period. The wife could apply for this, but she was a supplementary cardholder on my account. Any idea whether supplementary cardholders are considered to have "previously held any card product"?

    • +2

Supplementary card holds are eligible. This is NOT counted as having an AMEX card.

      • Thanks!

      • Hi, off topic to this post, but do you know whether that rule applies to all other credit cards too?

Looking to get my partner on the westpac 80k points card, but she was a sub card holder of my account within the last 12 months.

Would she still be eligible for the bonus?

        Cheers

        • She’ll be fine. Credit card applications are only done in a single name, so if she was a supplementary account card holder she will be fine. But to be sure you can check with them and they’ll tell you.

      • Yes! I was just going to ask this question via chat. Good to know °!

  • Noob question but what are the advantages of using a card like this over a normal debit card? How do the benefits outweigh the $450 annual fee?

    • +2
      • $450 travel credit
      • purchase protection
      • refund protection
      • travel insurance
      • AMEX + Qantas lounge access
      • earn QFF points on purchases
      • higher QFF points earn rate vs other “basic” credit cards
      • no cap on earning QFF points vs other “basic” credit cards
      • it’s credit so you’re using someone else’s money (not your own as with debit cards) so this can help improve your cashflow; you can then use your own income for other things e.g., if you have a mortgage, a common strategy is to link that to an offset account and leverage your improved cashflow to reduce your mortgage interest payments
      • AMEX offers
      • AMEX cardholder only benefits during events e.g., Vivid Sydney lounge access, Sydney OpenAir Cinema lounge access, etc

source: I have this (and other) credit cards :-)

      • +1 The AMEX offers alone you will likely over 12 months get back more than $450 YMMV but im over $1000 after less than 12months

      • +1

Thanks, that sounds awesome! Now I just need to get a job. :D

  • can i convert these to QATAR points?

any1 know the value to upgrade from economy to business, from sydney to doha (their website is confusing to me).

    • +1

No, but you can redeem QFF points for flights on Qatar.

  • I lose track of my last membership? Do I just call? Probably only around 12 months

    • Yes, they will tell you if you call up.

      • How long do we wait from last cancellation?

        .

  • +1

I want to sign my girlfriend up to this deal, and get the 40,000 MR referral points, but I also was planning to cancel my AMEX Explorer before the annual fee kicks in in 5 weeks. The online agent is saying I won't get the referral points because they take 8-10 weeks to post to my account.

They also say, I can keep the card to 24th April and then requent cancellation and annual fee will be refunded, as long as I don't use the travel credit.

can I confirm from someone if all this is true?

    • In my experience referral points post within 2 weeks.

  • If my business have AMEX Business Card currently, am I still eligible for the 100k points?

    • Slightly different as I have an AMEX Corporate card, but wondering the same.

Might have to give the online chat a go to find out.

  • I have amex

I think the customer service is excellent, their online chat can actually get things done like cancel bookings etc.

Amex travel can be 50:50. Overall most flights are similarly priced compared to online sites etc, however they don't have budget airlines.

Amex travel for accommodation is fair as well

Amex travel for car insurance- no go, so far i can only book the bare minimum i.e. can't book compleete excess insurance.

  • +2

    For those wondering:

With Amex there are 4 types of card groups which are all separate and allow you to earn a bonus in a different group/family of cards, these are:

Amex Corporate cards (not to be confused with business cards)
    Amex Westpac cards
    Amex David Jones Cards
Amex (direct issued such as: Explorer, Edge, Ultimate, VA platinum etc)

    Taken from here

    • Does this one fall under the Amex direct issued?

  • Assuming you aren't likely to take full advantage of the $450, this deal seems better: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/474918

  • Does anyone know if buying that cheap Qantas carbon offset still triggers the Qantas spend to get the lounge passes? GF has this card and the year is almost up and hasn't spent with Qantas yet.

    • How about a Qantas gift voucher?

      • Possibly does, but you can do the carbon offset for 10 cents, and in the past this used to count as the eligible Qantas spend

    • +2

Yes. Spend $1 or more and you should be fine. I've seen reports that under $1 could fail.

It does - just did it a couple of weeks ago. $40 to Jakarta with a lounge pass after using credit and then using the Qantas carbon offset website. Can't complain.

    • I just found out about this and have purchased a $1+ offset. May not find out in time though, as I'm approaching my one year anniversary and will be cancelling.

The T&Cs state that the following spend is required:

"(i) Qantas passenger flights with a QF number, purchased directly
from Qantas.com.au using your Qantas American Express
      Ultimate Card;
(ii) Qantas Frequent Flyer and Qantas Club membership joining and
      annual fees.

Excludes Jetstar, Qantas Holidays, Qantas Freight, Qantas Cruises,
Qantas Box Office, Qantas Wine, Qantas Insurance, Qantas Shopping,
Qantas Merchandise Store or any other Qantas branded goods and
services other than those items outlined in (i) and (ii) above"

They could very well argue the carbon offset does not meet the criteria but worth a shot anyway, for the price and what it's for.

  • This sound like a good deal for a big spender? Is there anything better which also has a VISA or Mastercard? If not, I'll settle for this

    • You can have more than one card simultaneously. 4 is the maximum I have held at one time.

Thanks to whoever used my referral link!

    Owe you big time!!

  • +3

Used a random referral link. Application took 2 minutes and was approved straight away. The limit of $3K on the card is so low compared to all my other 100K+ point earning cards (which is a good thing).

    • do you get referral points + bonus 100k points?

  • Does holding a corporate Amex exclude one from availing the points and Qantas cash?

    • No

  • Churn and burn fellas

These credit card companies never learn

  • Worth jumping on the chat to check eligibility if you can’t recall exactly when you last closed your card/what that card was. I thought I was ineligible but turns out the last AMEX card I held was a Westpac card, meaning I am in fact eligible.

  • Does OZB have a platform so we can make deals with potential referrers?

  • Do anyone know if i can apply any of a credit card ANZ FF black, NAB, this AMEX with working casual 2 places clearing up $2000 p/w
with rental income include? I am scared to get rejected and hurt my credit score lol

    • +1

      1) you would need to provide all your expenses as well as your income, as well as other credit cards, mortgages, loans, lines of credit
      2) even if you provided all of the above nobody could ever reliably tell you whether youre going to get approved or not

      • Do you think working Casual especially in 2 places will make it less favourably from full time job? I guess i wouldnt know if i didnt try lol. I had few credit cards back when i was working full time last year.

        • +1

It will certainly have an effect but who knows whether that would tip the scales for or against you? Like you said you won't know til you try

  • Anyone have real world experience on how quickly you receive the points after hitting minimum spend?

    • Usually in the same billing cycle as you meet the spend. Points are then transferred to your account at the end of the billing cycle.

  • Can AMEX travel credits be used with Qantas codeshare bookings?

Need to buy a KIX-CGK flight later this year and it won’t be a Qantas flight.

  • Just got mine approved and some lucky refferal gets to enjoy their 60000 points.

If my wife has a supplementary card can she still apply for her own card?

    • +1

      Yes.

    • Did they call you to verify something before approved?

  • Does anyone know from experience how long it takes for the bonus points to post after hitting the qualifying spend?

    • Usually in the same billing cycle as you meet the spend. Points are then transferred to your account at the end of the billing cycle.

  • Hi All - is the $450 Qantas voucher only redeemable for flights? Assume you cannot use it for say Hotel bookings?

    • Correct, Qantas flights only via the AMEX Travel site.

      • Is there any upper limit on the flight cost. Eg Flight cost can be 1200 so out of pocket would be 1200 - 450 = 750? Is that correct?

        • Yep that's correct. Pretty straight forward and is detailed when booking flights.

  • Happy Valentine's day honey, I got you 100,000 Qantas points!

rubs hands in glee at 20,000 more Krisflyer miles

  • +1

Anyone done the math on whether Qantas points or Amex rewards are better value?

    • Yes, Qantas points are better now. MR are devalued, hence why I am converting all MR to krisflyer and then cancelling my card.

Next card I get will be for Qantas points, or Velocity if they are the same bonus point amount, and then converting those to Krisflyer.

      • what's the ratio for Qantas/Velocity to Krisflyer?

  • That 18 months is such a killer. Amex has deals all year especially with shopsmall promos so hard for me to cAncel my essential card and wait out 18 months without Amex

  • +1

Just applied and approved within 5 mins…

    • Did they call you to verify something before approved?

      • +1

No, it was all done on Amex website and approved straight away.. (took me less than 5 mins?) and received the card yesterday..

        • Do you have any other Amex card opened?

        • Thanks for that. I've just applied, conditionally approved + uploaded docs today.

Hopefully I receive tomorrow, or next Monday

          • +1

@sssbp: You should be fine. I found AMEX is generous in approval.

  • Has anyone had any experience in signing their spouse up, but linking it to the same QFF account that was originally used?

    • +2

In my experience they do need names of the card holder and the QFF account to match.

It might accept it initially while applying for the card but once points are transferred for the first time, they will bounce back and Amex will send you a letter asking for you to look into correcting the mismatched details

The best way for you to sign up your spouse would be to just apply for a QFF account in their name (there are plenty of codes floating around to waive the joining fee). Then do a family transfer of their bonus points to your main account (if you want all your points in one place) later on

  • How long does it typically take for AMEX to process applications?

I applied on Saturday night and have yet to receive an email to even acknowledge my application.

In no rush, just wondering if it's normal.

    • +1

It’s not unusual to hear nothing and just receive the card in the mail

    • I applied on Monday morning, approval email received and got the card delivered next day…

      • I got nothing in response to my application yesterday, not even an emailing confirming the application number. But today, out of the blue I got an emailing with a code for a complimentary Qantas Wine Premium Membership, and the email had my new card number in the corner!

        • Yep, not surprised there!

        • After you got the wine email how long did it take to receive the card after that? Or how long from applying to receiving the card?

  • Can I use bpay with amex to make payments to third parties? If so does that cover the minimum spend?

  • +1

    Ty op

  • when does my 3 months start?
is it upon receiving the card or activation?

  • Currently have ANZ Black cars with $15k limit. I apply for cards every 3 - 4 months.

Even with requesting a $3k Amex limit what are my chances of being approved? Currently earn around $80k?

    • Correct me if I'm wrong - sound's a bit tough if you already have a CC with $15k limit, and wanting another CC with $3k limit on 80k.

      • @ssbp - I couldn’t agree more, but wanted to get a second opinion.

I do like the ANZ card, but I do t want to close it off and then AMEX reject me.

        • I think you should be okay with this one. I just started a new role, do the same apply for about 3-4 cards a year. I got rejected for the NAB one and applied for this the next week and got approved. Just gave them two tax assessment notices and a payslip. Approved for 21k. On a slight more income for you and toggled $200k and a $600k mortgage (never paid cc interest) worth of limits, but again this was before postive credit reporting. I would say, you can roughly support $50k worth of card limits with your income (at a guess) under the current lending climate. Things are loosening up again I feel.

          • @bausie: Also it depends on your living arrangements/living expenses and other debt. All advice is general and not specific to your situation ;).

            • @bausie: @bausie - Thank you for your advice!

Live at home so expenses are very small. Did you apply for your Amex card during this promotion, or a few years ago?

              • @StonedWizard: That can both go for and against you. My personal experience with credit card companies is they like to see you put yourself in a position to screw yourself over (overcapitalise and pay interest). If you can appear like you will, but won't it helps. Aka me with a mortgage, margin loan, credit cards and small HELP debt. But these guys compared to the major banks don't really seem too fussed with credit criteria. I applied in this promotion, got my card about 2 weeks ago. Don't forget to hit the referral link (hope you get me and get me an extra 60,000 points :))

  • Any tips on the best way to burn through the 3k? Wanting to try and avoid fees etc - gift cards?

    Do JB Hi-Fi accept Amex?

  • Can I use the 450$ credit with qff points to pay for a flight?

    I.e points + pay?

    • No, but you can get Amex travel site to price match flights with iwantthatflight if you push them over the phone. Airlines are desperate atm.

  • +1

Reached $3k spend limit on the weekend. This morning, AMEX app showing 100k QFF points earned.

Once I use the $450 travel credit + I receive the QFF points next month, I'll be closing this card off to start my 18 month timer.

So far out of Westpac Altitude Plat, St George Amplify Plat and AMEX -

    • AMEX has been the smoothest so far.

    • St George's signup was such a mess, took 3 weeks to resend the same docs twice, but their support team AFTER was great.

    • Westpac was average, no issues.

    • How long did it take for your Amex card to come in the mail once approved?

      • A week

  • Just received the 100k points. Very impressed with AMEX's speed at all things so far.

  • Just applied and I unticked the box when it asked "do you want to be assigned a credit limit"
Anyone know if they'd just give me $3k limit? Because thats all i want

    • Min credit limit $3,000
      Max credit limit $50,000

If you assigned a manual credit limit, yes you can choose for the min. $3k.

But since it's now up to them, they'd provide/approve a limit as high as they deem that's feasible for you tbh.

      • yeah they called me to confirmed some details and i said i selected manual credit but there was no field for me to put in how much.
the representative said oh system has approved a recommended limit for you (it was much much higher but i cant remember how much), please call back when you receive the card. I was like ehhh…ok fine.

  • Is there any way to get the lounge passes right now by booking flights on the Qantas website (for the lounge pass) and getting the travel credit back by that flight getting cancelled?

    • I bought some carbon offsets about 3 weeks ago but haven't received my lounge passes yet. I wonder what's going on with this…?

  • Those that got this card - how are you planning to use the $450 Qantas Travel Credit given the ongoing situation?

    • Unfortunately Ill be keeping this card longer than I originally wanted (I obtained 100k points within first month), purely to use the 450 once the pandemic finishes.

      currently on 2nd month.

      What about you?

      • im in the same boat - figure with the situation its going to be cutting it fine with international travel within the next 10-11 months or so - Im assuming the original $450 travel credit will expire at the end of the first 12 months?

The only option might be to use it on an interstate trip towards the end of the year.

        • original $450 travel credit will expire at the end of the first 12 months?

Correct. Once you surpass 12 months - you pay another $450, and you don't accrue the credit

The only option might be to use it on an interstate trip towards the end of the year.

          Yep.

          • @sssbp: @SimpleLeverage - I am stuck in the same boat right now.

I can’t see travel restrictions will life in the next 12 months. So looks like I’ll have to just treat it as an annual fee.

Shame you can’t use it for anything on the qantas Store.

            • @StonedWizard: We're in all this together! haha

I was on the AMEX Live Chat and I tried to ask for the annual fee waiver, due to literally unable to fly/use the $450 credit.

They weren't interested in waiving and just said they may offer another travel credit extension later down the track - BUT the $450 does not accrue

I'm hoping the travel credit can be extended and I can just cancel my card.

PDS confirms if you cancel the card, the travel credit is gone, so I have my doubts I can do that.

In summary, imo, if travel restrictions are still in place, even for interstate (in fact, even if they're lifted but there is no vaccine) at around October
              - I'll just book flights as late as possible in the future for Melbourne.
              - Cancel the card.
              - Hope the booked flights is when vaccine is produced/distributed by the date of my flights

Otherwise if still not safe to fly by that point - I'll just count the 100k points paid for with $450, and not fly.

            • @StonedWizard:

PDS confirms if you cancel the card, the travel credit is gone, so I have my doubts I can do that.

Just confirmed this via Live Chat

      • Flight credit must be used within the anniversary, but presumably the actual flight date can booked outside of the 12 months period?

  • Is there anyway to cancel and not pay the $450 fee?

    • You're charged the $450 in the first statement

  • Deal is still on - my portal referral offer expires 22 April.
