Sony 40" Full HD LCD TV 40CX520 Series - $680 @ JB Hi-Fi WA

480

Hello again :)

This TV is model KDL40CX520. Listed on JB Hifi website for $796. The last couple of days it was advertised on the radio for $698 at Sony Store Cannington. I went to JB across the road and managed to talk them down to $680. I've looked everywhere prior to the radio advertisement and the cheapest available instore was at JB and online for $739.31 at Billy Guyatts.

I've tried the TV tonight and am suitably impressed by its performance, both as a gaming/DVD TV on my Xbox 360 in the master bedroom and normal TV. DVD's are crystal clear. This TV does well for me as a second in the bedroom. I'm stoked with the price and hope you guys enjoy this deal.

Attached please find my receipt.

I've owned Sony TV's all my life and never had anything go wrong on me, it is the only brand I 100% trust for TV's.

Cheers.

I have this TV and it's great. This is a fantastic price, RRP is $999 and a decent sale price is $799. $680 is a bargain.

  • +3

Nice bargain with a great story to match bro.

  • +1

I don't think you would have gotten that price if you hadn't bought the PS3 and the antenna with it.

    • +1

The PS3 is at JB's advertised price though and they probably made shit-all on it anyways. The antenna, no idea.

    • +2

I got the price without asking for the PS3 and antenna. I asked for further discount after I said I'd buy the other two, and he gave me a $49 discount on the antenna.

      • +1

Oh ok. Disregard my comment then.

      • +1

Antenna is a total ripoff. Is it 24 carat gold plated?

    • The program that takes care of the colours and stuff. Basically the processor & the program are still far more superior than Chinese brands. Sony and Samsung are still the top of picture quality in TVs. I have not seen any Chinese brands showing good images like Sony anywhere yet. Besides everything is made in China these days.

      • +3

I'm pretty sure Samsung, Sony, Panasonic, etc. make their TVs in Malaysia now-days.

        • +2

It depends. Some Panasonics are still being made in Japan.

      • +3

I know it's you who negged me. twinbag it's you!

        • +3

Nope, it was me…for the same kind of tired unquantified Sony fanboi rant we're all sick of hearing to justify paying nearly double for a TV set of equivalent size & specification. For reference: http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/51553

When you said "The program that takes care of the colours and stuff. Basically the processor & the program are still far more superior than Chinese brands", you actually provided negligible useful information; you might as well have just quoted 'The Castle' directly & said "It's just the vibe of the thing"!

The Sony might be slightly better, but >40% better…I doubt it! ;)

        • +3

It's completely ignorant to assume that the increased price of the Sony must be 1-to-1 related to its performance. Size and specification seldom amount to much when comparing TVs.

Although I don't completely agree with kazines, he does have a point. There are differences in the quality of the manufacturing, materials used such as the LCD panels, software (yes, TVs do have software) that handles colour reproduction, and general reputation of the company that justify spending the extra money for. The targeted markets for these TVs are not the same; Sony positions itself as a premium product whereas Vivo is targeted at those who aren't willing to spend as much.

At the end of the day, you will not achieve as good a picture quality on the Vivo compared to on the Sony.

Three words kheob: ValueForMoney! Only the foolishly naive or wildly ignorant would blithely accept an increase in price for ANY product without expecting commensurate tangible (<key word there!) performance or quality gains; it's simple common sense mate!!!

I'm not agreeing with either Twinbag or Kazines, both are examples of extremism…as usual I suspect the truth lies somewhere in between! ;)

        • +2

Holy big words Batman. I'm not exactly sure what you're saying now.

Yes, I do often tend to forget that not everyone has the benefit of a classical education!

Hello 40" FHD TV! and maybe a PS3…
    OMG OMG!

    • +4

      Do it! :D

    • +2

      Yes… DO IT :)

    • +1

even hypotoad would say DoALL GLORY TO THE HYPNOTOAD.

    • +3

all 6 of us then?.. Just to add to your "stats": I still have a Sony CRT 37", plays 720p HD and it still hasn't ever crossed my mind to update (although this deal came close)

      • +3

If you're 'upgrading' from a HDTV CRT, then this TV will disappoint.

I saw it in person at a friends house yesterday, and while it's got a decent picture for the price, it's got 'grey' black levels and poor colour fidelity off-axis.

I upgraded earlier this year from a Sony kvhr32m31, arguably the best CRT ever made, to a Panasonic th-p50v20a, and I think you'd agree if you had a chance to compare first hand that it's only the panasonic plasmas (V series and up) that have a picture that colour wise can match that of a good CRT.

        • Grey black levels? You have got to be kidding me. This TV isn't the best in the world, but trust me, the blacks are black.

        • If you're 'upgrading' from a HDTV CRT, then this TV will disappoint.

To put this in perspective, if you're upgrading from said CRT, then most LCD's will disappoint when it comes to blacks! :p

      • +3

yes bad maths sorry :) too much wine - I am talking Panels and not CRT TV's. My old Sony CRT from 1998 is still going strong at my sister in laws house. The Bravia Panel's in the past have been terrible quality. They may have improved but I won't be trying them out. Old Sony products were quality, which is how I got hooked, now they are the same quality (and in some cases - worse) than other brands. The Koreans are starting to make the quality stuff now.

What is our society coming to?

    • +4

      and your point is?

    • +1

… A society where we like to have a TV in our bedroom. Problem?

    • +7

Fortunately, when our society goes off the rails in the bedroom, the police are handy to start making arrests - http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/51731

      • +2

        Good call. :)

    • +2

I know, right, a 40" flat screen in the bedroom? 24-32" is a suitable size for a bedroom. 40" is a living room size TV. These days it's just bigger, and everything in excess.

      • +1

        That rule seems rather arbitrary.

    • +1

yeah i much rather have a mirror in the ceiling than a TV.

  • +1

costco sells the later model for 779
    EX520

only worth it if u have the membership

for me.. reckon its a better unit. the whole thing is a lot smaller and thinner but still 40"
compared it side by side at dick smith…

has wifi crap which i dont think i will need it

  • +3

Yeah, I have a Sony Rear projector TV from a few years back, still going strong, I am actually praying to God that it dies soon so I can buy another one.

    • +4

sorry!Even God can't help you because ITS A SONY.

  • +1

    Same here.

  • +2

Price is good but you need to be aware that this is only a 50Hz model. With such a large screen, you will get lots of lag when displaying fast action movie. Some may find this ok, others may feel a bit nauseating.

  • +1

I just got the Samsung UA40D5000 for $799 instead of the Sony.

    http://www.samsung.com/au/consumer/tv-audio-video/television…

Seems like a v good price for a pretty decent TV
but am boycotting Sony cos of their recent misdeeds.
(George Hotz, the rootkit fiasco, asking google for all IPs that accessed
youtube clip of how to hack PS3, removal of features from the PS3, handling
of the hacking into their system and George Michael and on and on and etc etc…)

They make pretty decent TVs though.

Ah, the price I pay for my principles.

    • -3

DOn't hate the player, hate the game, simply don't buy the ps3

  • +1

This is a great bargain for a 40" TV so a big positive for this deal.

  • +2

Possible price match to harvey norman to get the bonus $200 of sony products (for buying a Sony 40" and above) - straight from the ad on TV. ends monday.

    and then buy a 160gb ps3 for $298 - $200 = $98

$778 for PS3 and this TV, Not Bad!

  • +1

I just purchased the Samsung UA40D5000 for $730 no troubles at JBhifi Forest Hill Victoria. This tv has much better image than the sony and is LED total slimline, should see the screen lovely. On top of that it has 100Hz. The only thing that I would have liked was an inbuilt browser but oh well we shall survive. Oh it also streams straight from my PC all movies! MKV and all formats no issues.

    • This deal is good (as I am tempted to get the Sony shown as above)
but I'd get this Samsung for extra $50 for LED & 100Hz

      Seriously :)
Btw riggit. Get a PS3! you can use that broser :P
but who really cares about internet browser on a under $1000 TV?
I believe smart TVs are well over $1500.

Would you be so kind and upload the receipt please?

    • Shame I actually picked up a Sony 40EX520 yesterday, though I might not have if I had seen this - not so much about the panels, just the fact that 100hz anti-jutter would be nice.

    • The UA40D5000 is a great television. The 100 refers to the motion flow. In fact the UA40D5000 is a 50 hertz refresh rate. If you want a 100 hertz only take notice of the refresh rate. On a Samsung, if you want a 100 hertz refresh you should consider the UA40D6000. If you were told that the UA40D5000 is a 100 hertz tv, take it back to the shop. It is a misleading and deceptive to call a UA40D5000 or a UA40D5500 led-lcd a 100 hertz television.

      • Yes you are correct my bad 100 Motion Flow, supposed to enhance high speed jitters in any case, not as good as 100Hz though. However at $730 it is still very hard to go past. The UA40D6000 was $200 more, I had decided on a hard limit for the cost so even though the 6000 gives you a fair amount more TV I just didn't need it. I think the 6000 gives you the 3D option and 100Hz and some Samsung Apps.

I actually went in to buy the Sony but after I saw the Samsung and the guy could do this price I was sold. Do yourselves a favor go look at both, they are on display in Forest Hill at least.
