Vivo 40" Full HD LCD TV $399 Delivered - Dick Smith 1 Hour Sale 7pm-8pm AEST 25/08

910

G'morning gang. Bringing you all an exclusive which I just found out from a reliable source ;) The big 1 hour deal which DSE has been building up for tonight is the Vivo 40" Full HD LCD TV for $399. The link to right still says "come back later to see the deal" but I can confirm that it will be this TV. They will update that link at some point today, but as noted, the sale price will only be activated between 7pm and 8pm AEST tonight. The regular price of this TV is $499, but is currently on sale at $449 as found here: http://dicksmith.com.au/product/GE6163/vivo-101cm-40-quot-fu…

I know it's not a Sony/Panasonic/<insertbrandhere>, but $399 delivered for a Full HD 40" is pretty good I reckon, even if just for the rumpus room.

Don't forget 3% off with MBC. +1 if you like the deal, and after 24 posts i've become thick skinned so don't go easy on me :)

##############################

IMPORTANT UPDATE: If you encountered any difficulties placing an order between 7-8pm, don't despair. There was an unexpected upgrade to the payment processing system so the Rep has agreed to honour all unsuccessful transactions (see Rep's comments below). Simply email or call DSE on 1300 366 644 after 8am tomorrow and let them know that the DSE rep has notified ozbargain of the payment problems and they should honour the deal for you! Gives a bit of extra time to those who were still thinking about it ;)

Ouch too soon Chris! I still haven't finished grieving from missing that deal haha

  • pretty good deal. Held off on the last couple of 32" deals because I wanted one with a headphone jack, but soon realised most don't come with headphone jacks anyway. Can always use the RCA outputs for that.

    • I went to check the TV in store, and to my surprise they seemed to be stocking a few for $459. Those ones actually have 3 HDMI inputs and also a headphone jack. So I'm totally confused - are they trying to clear out the older batch online or they have been sliently upgrading without updating the info on web site?

  • +2

I've got the 42" version of this from an OzBargain last year. The speakers are woeful but it's not an issue if you have it hooked up to home theatre etc. Screen isn't class leading but it's actually better than you'd expect and well worth $399.

  • Is this an online only special or will be available for pickup ?

    • Online and 1 hour(7-8pm AEST) only today.

  • What is "3% off with MBC" ?

    • +2

You can get cashback by going through their site. Not the first $10 though, but everything after that (in the next year). It comes from the commission the retailers pay to the advertisers. Remember to delele your cookies before you go through to make the purchase.

I just got the 32" Vivo Full HD tv for 299 last week after I returned the ALDI TV.

I gotta say, I was pleasantly surprised with the quality. It was well worth the extra $50 to get the Full HD(VIVO) comparing with a HD (ALDI) screen.

If someone can get one and post a review.. that will be nice

    • +1

LOL, I also bought the Aldi 32" LCD last week and am having serious thoughts of returning it. The range of features and price is fantastic but there is some noticeable back light bleed which, when trying to watch a movie in the dark(which is primarily what I will be using this TV for), is making me vomit. I have tried certain dark jedi tricks to no avail - magical screen rubbing and tapping motion won't alleviate the light bleed(pun not intended!).

With some reviewers and opinions given on things you do have to read between the lines. A modern electrical device in the hands of a neanderthal is something that can't be avoided. The sad fact is in the meantime they have learnt to write and then post reviews! :-(

So many promises fell flat when I brought home my shiny new IPod touch.
      * The Camera
      * Vibrate (or lack thereof)
      * HDR Photos
I was so excited to see the camera show up on the IPod touch 4G, so I hounded my wife until she gave in. Under the premise that it would be a replacement for the family camera.
I understood that the camera was lower resolution than the IPhone 4 camera, but the salesperson assured me that it wouldn't be a drama.
On top of that, I only discovered after purchasing the device that there is no vibrate for notifications as specified in the facetime instructions at the time of purchase. And there's no HDR for still photos, which I was hoping to compensate for the lack of high resolution stills.
While it's a great device for games and apps, and notably brilliant for music, it's severely lacking in the very area that made the purchase so exciting in the first place.
I will be taking it back next weekend for a refund.

    "Power Consumption: < 260W"

    That's a lot of watts.

    • +1

When this baby hits 88 miler per hour… you're going to see some serious sh*t!

    • I looked at the manufacturers handbook and that quotes the power consumption as < 180W
(See the last page here: http://www.vivotvs.com/Manuals/LTV40FHD.pdf )

  • My friend got this TV pre-deal. It's not great, but that's why it's on sale. Sometimes you get what you pay for, and for what you pay for in this deal, it does!

  • Does anyone have experience with delivery from Dick Smith?

I am moving home in 3 weeks hence I want to know if I can ask for delivery to be delayed, and that how do we arrange a time as I work on weekdays (so do they deliver on the weekend and can you specify a time at order)?

Anyone that knows will help a lot, thanks!

    I don't understand — isn't the 42" $399 right now?
    http://dicksmith.com.au/product/GE6162/vivo-106cm-42-quot-fu…

The specs look identical to the 40"— am i missing something?

    • good find. anyone can explain?

    • And according to the energy ratings website the 42" consumes less power…..

      • The 42" is the older model Vivo, hence the Pickup only option.

And you'll probably be hard pressed to find one that isn't a floor model.

    • The 42" is an older model. There are only display units left in a handful of stores. If you're happy enough with a display model etc then you're right, it's a good deal.

    • Ah! it looks like a choice of a BRAND NEW with a couple of inches short or the limited used ones with the added 2 inches - choice is yours!

    • Good find, worth a post on it's own!! :-)
.. oops, just checked and no stock around my area!

  • +1

LOL good find. Internet HYPE. It's only for one hour at an inconvenient time so it must be good.

  • The 42" is instore pickup, whereas the 40" is delivered.

    No deal here to me!

Still I would prefer the pickup option to get those additional 2"

    • I just went in-store to check it out - looks pretty good. I asked them if they could do it for the same price as it was being picked up from in-store but they couldn't.

I asked him about the 42" and he said the only 42" they still had was the plasma. Apparently it's not very good - much better off getting the 40" LCD. The 42"s available locally are all repaired units, but he said they're very power hungry and have bad issues with reflection (obviously being a plasma they'll have this issue but he said it's far worse than most plasma's).

On a side note did anyone collect on the Deleted MS WINDOWS 7 HOME Premium UPGRADE 3 User PACK from DSE?

I have my print out and have received no call from store…….

  • +4

Price is ok but my garange is full of gadgets that i have to park my car on the drive way.well i think this is an ozbargainer way of life.

    • I think it's time you have a garage sale to clear out all your unwanted junk in the style of OzzyB to attract all us cheapskates.

  • If I hadn't bought a 32" full hd 1080p soniq from jbhifi for $299 some months ago I would have bought this one. Would be happy to pay extra $100 for extra 8" even with same display resolution.

  • I paid about $1200 for a similar tv about 2 years ago :(

  • nice offer, would like to visit the shop to have a look.

    "I know it's not a Sony…"

    I'm glad it's not a Sony!

I spent a small fortune on a Sony Bravia, it packed up in less than 3 years of light use and Sony 'Customer Care' couldn't care less that their premium product line has such a short lifespan. So this will do me nicely as a replacement.

I have a feeling it will last me longer than 3 years and even if it doesn't I can buy a second one and will still have spent less than the cost of a crappy Sony.

So thanks OP, assuming I can get on the website tonight and there's enough stock I'll be getting one of these.

    • +2

There's an article on warranties that may be helpful with your Sony problem.
      http://www.smh.com.au/money/warranty-warpath-20100524-w6aj.h…
"the law says consumers have the right to a refund, replacement or repair if the product doesn't last as long as one would reasonably expect, bearing in mind its cost."
I'm sure Sony would be aware of this. By the way, I have a Sony Bravia, and have been very happy with it.

I had a look at the Vivo at lunch time (looking for a cheap spare TV), and was so dissapointed with the picture quality up against the other brands on display that I'll wait for something better - so I suggest those interested check it out for themselves to be on the safe side.

      • Thanks for the link. Yes I'm going down the implied warranty route at the moment. Sony have been sat on my e-mail reminding them of their legal obligations for a few weeks now. It looks like I'll be taking it to the office of fair trading at the end of the month if I still have no reply by then.

What's annoying me most though is that Sony have extended the manufacturers warranty on my model, the KDL46x3100, until some time next year because of a design flaw that makes the panels useless when the glue they used inevitably fails. Yet they still expect me to pay a $1,500 repair bill because my problem is not related, but this design flaw will still be present.

I accept that no matter the brand, problems can occur. It's how companies address those problems that makes the difference between the good and the bad. Sadly Sony fall into the latter group.

  • yuck butt ugly. also 260w power consumption is more than a double the usual for 40" LCD screen these days

    • True, it's on par with LCD's from a few years back. I had a Samsung 40" full-HD LCD which was a bit over 3 years old (just out of warranty) when the panel failed. That had a 240W power usage.

      • I'm already starting to see many of the early generation LCD panels starting to fail and break down. 3 years is not a very good lifespan for a TV, regardless of the brand or implied 'quality'. A family member's yum cha brand 46" died last week after less than 2 years of usage. Atleast they are getting cheaper and better by the month so you can replace it with something newer. Those old CRTs soldiered on for years - sometimes 20 yrs or more without a hitch!

  • Anyone know the energy rating on this?
    (How many stars)

  • Thank you for the post, i have this question ( for now )

What's the "Power Consumption: < 260W" means ? How do they calculate it ?

    • +4

they put 30" standard fry pan on the back of the TV, in 24hrs how many wedges it can cook, seems this one can make 260 wedges, I reckon enough for a family for a whole week, that's why obesity is now an issue in this country

      • +2

I think that's a great feature… times are tough, maybe you can cook your dinner while watching masterchef?

      • -3

funny joke, until you mentioned something about obesity which made no sense.

  • is it worth buying extended warranty on it?

    • +2

The way TV prices are dropping, it probably isn't worth it. In 12 months you can probably buy this equivalent TV for $300. I'd take my chances on this one.

  • Grabbed one, but had to checkout using paypal as when I tried to use credit card it just kept failing and saying my details were no good even though it hadn't asked for any yet.

  • i really want one too but have no where to put the credit card details. so not happy

    • Same here - not sure what's going on!! Keeps rejecting CC payment option.

      • +2

Our payment provider has gone down. We will honour customers who have attempted to buy the deal. Paypal is working fine, credit card is an issue.

If you make a post here and get in contact with us with your email/phone details we will honour the price and give you a call tomorrow to take details.

        • +2

Here's an idea. When you make a limited time discount offer, don't make it after business hours when no one is around to fix any issues.

  • Ahhh thanks Dicksmith, so i am not just going crazy. lol. I have just sent an email via the DSE website, however normal response is 2-4 business days. I will still be calling tomorrow about it though.

    • +3

We'll be calling everyone we can identify tomorrow. Already onto it.

      • OK - Thanks

      • Can I call 1300 366 644 to talk to you guys? I've got a limited window as on when I can take calls tomorrow. Or I'll need to call a different number?

        • You can give the guys a call on that number when you can, they will give you the deal. There should be people on from 8am.

  • What I hate about these 1 hr hyped up deals is that their order system can't handle the high volume of load which means many people miss out and is frustrating at the least.

    • +5

Maybe they should open a sister site for server overload deals…Dick of the Day! :p

      • +2

Hmmm… I think a site with that name might be selling something else…. It wasn't a capacity issue, the servers were at less than 30% of their peak load. It was our payment provider making a change to their system in the evening without notice. We're very sorry that our customers were impacted.

  • How about a 40" Full HD Sony for $399

    • haha, may be in 2 years from now

    • +4

Sure, send me your credit card details and I'll see what I can do for you.

  • Tried several times without success with credit card payment n i gave up.

  • +1

Well looks like many enjoyed this deal, and thanks to all for their thanks and comments. I can tell you submitting this via the iphone and putting in enough details and links to make sure it all made sense was a bit of a marathon at 2am, but I'm happy it was totally worth it!

Thanks DSE rep for keeping an eye on proceedings throughout the evening and agreeing to honour all transactions in lieu of payment processing problems. I will update the deal description accordingly!

  • is there a time limit today for honoring last night's deal?

i'm at work right now and can't get on the phone with DSE

    • Should be fine whenever you ring. The rep above said as long as you post here he/she will take note of it..

  • I purchased this via Paypal and not with my CC details, and just received an invoice, dont you just do the payment through Paypal and not need my intervention for this?

    • From reps post above "Paypal is working fine, credit card is an issue." So no intervention needed by you. Only people who tried to pay via CC had dramas.

  • Does anyone know why the one in the stores for $449 have 3 hdmi ports and a USB port? I'm really interested in getting it for $399 but am wondering whether it'll be the same unit as the one in store.. Both have the model number LTV40FHD

    • I'm curious about that very same thing, and also what the real power rating is. The specs on the website says <260W, the manual on the Vivo website says 180W… it's all so confusing! What exactly have we all bought?

      • I know, it's very confusing. I actually phoned them and the man himself wasn't sure of the specs, and had to go to the Vivo website to check it out, so i wasn't able to gain any confidence from that phone call.

  • good deal. mine is coming on Monday :)

    • got my confirmation e-mail at 7.04pm, but mines on backorder :(

  • Well, GREAT DEAL! I got mine today. In fact, I am typing this note in my bed with my logitec wireless keyboard and mouse (also a bargain obtained from none other than the bargs) connected to my lappy using a jamell $5 HDMI cable all viewed through my nice new LCD. NICE

  • Got mine today, 4 or more bright pixels ;( 2 next to each other in middle of screen and 2 more next to each other near bottom middle :(

gah! Anyone know DSE's exchange policy?

    • Got mine today - very disappointed to find 8 pixels dead/stuck in a cluster. I'll be ringing Dick Smith tomorrow - not sure that I'm up to going through an exchange, probably a high possibility that the next will have the same issues! I think it will be covered by both Dick Smith's return and Vivo pixel policy. So I'll probably just ask for a refund.

  • got mine today, very happy. Good picture, audio is not great but not awful either.

  • Got mine earlier in the week but only just got the chance to take it out of the box last night. Got it for my gf. Yeah, it's a $400 tv. Not that impressed. Got 1 bright green stuck pixel near the centre of screen. Major bleeds top right and top left of screen. By this time next year probably buy something else to replace it. But it's 40"! Used to watching a 51cm so have to sit WAY back further.

    • I've been burnt with a few cheap and nasty LCDs - dead pixels, back light bleed, audio distortion, etc. All this downward pressure on prices hasn't really improved quality. Might wait it out for a good price on a reputable brand with decent warranty.

As long as she is relatively happy with it and if the defects don't bother her. Personally, something like non-uniform backlighting would drive me crazy to watch, call it OCD but I just cannot stop scrutinising and noticing the flaw, which detracts from my enjoyment of the TV. Get used to making your new giant LCD the focal point of your room and sit at a minimum of double the distance of the screen size.

  • Did anyone exchange theirs? Mine arrived today, and it's got stuck (bright) red pixels as well :( I called DSE and they said to return it at the local store - has anyone done this and didn't have any issues? I'm worried the one I replace it with will also have this issue… has anyone got a "good" screen with no dead/bright pixels?

    • Okay so I exchanged it last night. The new one has a dead pixel near the centre left of the screen… which doesn't sound bad, but whenever there's anything bright on the screen you can see a black "hole" in the screen - which looks to be around 4 pixels wide/high (even though it's just one dead pixel!). It's noticeable even from a metre or so away from the screen. :(

I wonder how many times I can replace the screen before (a) I get one that isn't actually faulty or (b) before my local DSE starts getting mad. :(

      Where's the quality control?

      • 3rd one's the charm, as the saying goes - I finally got a good screen. :) Many thanks to the helpful staff at the Taylors Lakes DSE store who were very helpful and happy in exchanging the screens over with a minimum of fuss. :)
