Or price bet at ow for an unlocked one I did in the last deal

    • +7

You must have got lucky. They typically check every friggin minute detail to get out of their policy.

    • +2

Did you have a hassle convincing Officeworks to price beat a phone locked to a network? Any particular strategy you used?

      • True

        • At the time I just rang did the deal over the phone no issue

    • +3

You might have got the deal from Officeworks matching Amazon , but that was unlocked and not a Vodafone device. Unlikely to get that with this deal

  • +7

    I got 4 x A20 from Target at $150 each last year.
Beware that this model will have problem logging onto GPS signal.
All 4 of mine have issues with GPS. Sometimes it will work but it is hit and miss.

  • +4

I can't find it cheaper elsewhere

Apparently with its shitty GPS, you won't be finding anything with the phone.

Really surprised it's so popular with such a fundamental issue.

    • +6

Mine works fine, use it all the time for Waze. If it didn't then I would have returned it for a full refund under Aus Consumer Law.

    • Can confirm GPS is a complete joke on this phone. The only hack I know is to put the phone in airplane mode and do a full restart to get a GPS lock. Joke!

      • Can you give more details to the gps problem. Where does it situate you in relation to where you are?

        • It won't lock onto your GPS location for minutes, sometimes not at all. Other times it will be fine. The 'fix' is to go into flight mode/restart the phone.

WOrth consider for it's dual-SIM, cheaper, smaller, more pixels, more RAM & storage:

    SHARP Aquos S2 (C10) Mobile 4GB+64GB, 5.5", Dual-SIM, B28*, NFC, Android 8.0, USD $100 (~AUD $144) Shipped @ GearBest

Really going backwards with that phone overall. I'd be sticking to phones with android 9 that are upgradable to 10 at a bare minimum. People expect bigger batteries now too. I couldn't go back to a phone with less than a 5000mah battery myself.

      • +1

So what phone at a comparable price (not necessarily this cheap) would meet that?

        • +1

Depends what you want your trade off to be.

          Umidigi Power (2019 model)
          Umidigi Power 3 (2020 update)

Umidigi Power 3 would be my pick.

For a small premium with the new model.

Umidigi Aus store on eBay, aliexpress or DX.

          • @Oofy Doofy: I'm eyeing off the Power 3 but it's unclear when they're actually going to be shipping them, it keeps getting pushed back

          • @Oofy Doofy: Looks quite impressive, but what concerns me is that its sent via DHL, in 2-8 days (guess thats not the Power3) so where and at what cost would a warranty return be. Looks like its not Australian based.

            • @RockyRaccoon: Chances are if it breaks, it's because you've dropped it. That's the chance you take. PayPal provides some level of protection for warranty purposes.

I'm disappointed the power 3 isn't available from an Australian online store ATM.

              I have the umidigi F2.

          • @Oofy Doofy: Is DX safe to shop???
            Anyone have the experience?

            https://m.dx.com/p/umidigi-power-3-android-10-4gb-64gb-48mp-…

            Thanks in advance..

            • @katrodiyar: I bought my F2 from there…

              • @Oofy Doofy: How long they normally takes for delivery?

                • @katrodiyar: I ordered during the pre-sale. Don't ask how long that took, haha.

Now… Should be only a few weeks at most.

Official store is on AliExpress, I would probably order from there next time.

Don't believe a word of DX expedited shipping.

                  • @Oofy Doofy: Let us know when it's shipped if you don't mind?

                    • +1

                      @Wampus: I have it already.

                      • @Oofy Doofy: Oops sorry I misread your comment and thought you'd ordered the Power 3. That'll probably be my next phone, but looks like they've been delayed

              • @Oofy Doofy: How the camera on the F2?

                • +1

@ruskiromka: Main Camera good with AI mode activated.

ultra-wide cam needs optimised better. Also stuttering video recording on ultra-wide mode.

Depth and Macro cameras work well.

32mp front facing cam needs more optimisation. Not as crisp or clear as it could be, bit of noise too.

Both front and rear cameras can only do 1080p 30fps (this seems like a limitation enforced by software, not the chipset), and unless used in good lighting, you will have frame drops. In good lighting I am happy with the main camera for video, in low/er lighting I am not. Ultra wide video recording not happy with at all. All of these seem rectifiable with software optimisations.

Playing videos in app or native video playing app with make videos seem like they are corrupt or not working, using a third party video playing app shows everything is fine.

At around $250 or so, would still consider it a worthwhile purchase for a variety of other reasons.

                  • @Oofy Doofy: Thanks, strangely the Power 3 seems to be much better so maybe thats hope.

        • Moto G7 Power (getting Android 10) or Moto G8 Power, released end of this month. Both have 5000mah
          Or Samsung m30s - 6000mah

          Check this list:

  • 2.4 or 5 wifi supported?

    • +4

2.4 only. Not that is matters much.

      • +5

        Not that is matters much.

2.4 is much more prone to interference. Matters to me.

        • likewise

        • +1

          In your experience?

I can't remember the last time I had an interference issue with 2.4, unless QoS wasn't configured properly and people were hogging bandwidth. Oh, and microwave interference sometimes, but usually one can adjust the frequency setting on a modem/router to get around that potential issue, as the frequency range a microwave uses should be labelled on the rear.

  • Worth updating from my Moto G4?

  • Does this have a plastic or glass back?

    • Plastic, that's why I bought the flip cover mentioned in the OP.

    • Does anyone know if the A30 has the same GPS issues as the A20 ?

      • +2

it seems like A30 model has GPS issues on the earlier firmware version, base on following link https://r2.community.samsung.com/t5/Galaxy-A/Samsung-A30-GPS…

        • I'm really suprised Samsung hasn't made a fix for this. Maybe they can't?

          • +3

@Gaz1: My guess is that it is both hardware and software issue. I believe Samsung uses a cheaper & inferior GPS receiver / location chipset with A20, which uses only one frequency which reduces accuracy to begin with (I am assuming it is L1). However, it seems like Samsung has tried to compensate this weak GPS signal by tweaking software and forcing the phone to rather use Wi-Fi internet for location. In fact, Android phones already use this dual system. However, Samsung Galaxy A20 is particularly prone to this issue since it is relying too much on the Wi-Fi internet and their GPS receiver is inferior. Hence, it seems like the problem goes away when you turn on flight mode and force the phone to use the GPS receiver rather than the Wi-Fi internet, but soon you will face a problem with weak GPS signals. I don't think a simple firmware update could solve this issue.

      • +1

Same any current users able to confirm if the GPS issues are fix with the A30 pls?

  • +2

    Thanks got 1

The end date from the catalogue is 23/02/2020

  • +2

Thanks Op. I was thinking of getting one of these for the kid to play with! Just tossing up between AusPost and Big W for about the same price (with 5% off gift cards) but with a free case > https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/515839 .

Just bought the Optus branded A30 for $249 from Auspost. Put my Amaysim Sim in and it's working. Thought I'd double check, went through the process on the Optus page and I keep getting the response 'This movile device is not a locked Optus prepaid mobile device.'

    Screenshot: https://imgur.com/a/aHmT40C

Could I have gotten so lucky?

Some more details of the phone.

Model is SM-A350YN. Also came with a transparent case in the box.

  • Really surprised that these still get so much of a following. GPS troubles are well documented (all three A20s I've seen have the issue). Samsung seems unable/unwilling to fix it. Stay away from this device if GPS is important to you (basically everyone).

  • I have received invoice saying it is paid now where do I find the License (Credit) code?

  • Ordered the A20 online on Feb 10, still have not received it (in Perth). Rang Aus Post and they said it has been dispatched and gave me a tracking number, but all its says is that shipping information has been received. Was supposed to be dispatched within 2 business days. Anyone else finding delivery slow?

    • Finally got it, took 9 days from order to be delivered in Perth. Came with a $30 Vodafone prepaid starter kit. Phone itself is network locked to Vodafone. I used this deal (https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/517260) to unlock it. Then I flashed the XSA firmware (the installed firmware is VAP). Tested and confirmed that the phone supports VoLTE and VoWifi on Boost.

  • +1

Looks like these are out of stock (the a20) and both have gone up in price to 199 / 299

  • GPS fixed with latest Samsung OTA software update.

  • what do you do for warranty ? = just goto local PO ?

A20 I bought has shit itself
