As tempting as it is to downvote, I figure if there's such a thing as bananas under $10/kg maybe there's a chance of a god after all.

      • I just saw bananas under $10/kg at Doncaster Woolworths ($9.99/kg :P)

But no, I didn't buy them at that price.

    • +1

This is till the 28th August because banana prices are going to drop and drop until the end of the year, predictions are at sub $2/kg! But it's nice to see cheap bananas again!

Not that it's a big deal was just in the US and got 6 bananas for 39c. Ridiculous!

  • LOL, so cheap bananas are now a bargain WOAH!

  • Who would have thought that a year ago, $7KG bananas would be considered a bargain :)

  • +1

No doubt coles and woolies are running this great country together with the rich miners

  • Are these bananas a product of australia?

  • +4

I think you all need to start importing bananas. In even remote parts of Canada, bananas are about $1.50 a kg all year round…where I live in Sydney they range from $15 to $20 a kilo. Growers know they can charge more because they are protected, and the Coles/Woolies folks are professional gougers. It's a bloody joke in a country where they can be grown, and so close to places like Indonesia, etc. from which they could be very cheaply imported.

Even in Japan, they only cost about a buck a kilo: http://www.tokyoprices.com/banana-price-in-tokyo-japan/

    • I can't believe how such exorbitant banana prices survive in Australia. As it is a non-essential food, I thought that consumers would stop buying banana at such high prices and consequently prices will come down to normal. Obviously, it hasn't happened.

      • You obviously don't have children. Our boy eats bananas. No debate.

    • +2

      http://groceries.asda.com/asda-estore/search/searchcontainer…

$1.07 per kg, normal, usual, supermarket, price.

That's the price they could be easily in Australia, all the time. All they have to do is stop being protectionist and expecting consumers to subsidise farmers.

Frankly, if you going to be forced to pay way, way, over the top for australian produce, why can't you allow the expense against tax? It's a bail out, after all.

Oh, and I doubt Australian farmers get to charge over this level for exports to other countries. I bet they have to charge the market rate, no more. So why is the Australian consumer taken for the fool?

    • -4

Unless you want to contaminate Australian banana's forever with foreign diseases, you don't want to import them…

      • +2

thats a myth, you don't see aussie beef/foods that are 'free of diseases' selling at super premium prices overseas do you?

try charging people in asia AUD$15/kg for fruits and see what happens… i bet shops wouldn't even stock them.

        • -8

A myth? At a guess it seems you're quite uneducated on the matter and not in a position to make such a statement.

      • +2

what's so special about bananas? Australia imports lots of other fruits and vegie.

        • Exactly. Last week wasn't there something on the news regarding imports of Apples from New Zealand being allowed now? Just set up appropriate customs procedures. This has far less to do with diseases and more to do with using artificial barriers to protect local farmers.

    • You do realise jamwin that the prices in Australia this year are due to the fact we lost 90% of the banana crops right? We don't import because it keeps our farmers in business, if we did that would be a bunch more unemployed and unsustainable economically.

  • +5

Local fruit shop in Blacktown has it for $4.99 /kg

    http://lancasterstfresh.com.au/index.html

    Maybe you can price match???

  • +5

    $6.64/kg at OfficeWorks?

  • I remember I bought bananas for $0.50kg at west end saturday market, brisbane few months back. Cheap and good quality. I guess the southern states might be expensive compare to QLD.

    • No, QLD is expensive also. I'm sure theres some exceptions however and I'm not shocked a Sunday market is one of them.

  • +1

Not a bargain for up here - Just come to Coffs Harbour and u can get bananas for 4.50 kg and they're organic

  • 99cents a kilo seems like a long time ago in a galaxy far far away

  • +1

just allow bananas to be imported that will make them cheaper.

Why boycott Banana imports? stupid government. Hardly anyone pays expensive Bananas, they are left rotten…

    • -3

Unless you want to contaminate Australian banana's forever with foreign diseases, you don't want to import them…

      • Thats what customs is for. We import other foods.

    • I'm far from a farmer (I work in IT), however I can understand the importance of protecting a countries food supply. If all things go to hell then you need to at least be able to feed your country. This is one this the US have that can save them, a huge fertile food bowl.

      • Not having an abundance of banana's for 7-8 months isn't going to jeopardise any food supply. 7-8 months of low availability of one product is far better than importing them and risk bringing in something like Black Sigatoka.

      • Well they haven't really protected well. A lot of companies already sold their farms and lands and manufacturers sold to China etc, how is that protecting? Soon all our food will come from overseas

  • Anyone know where to get them cheap in Melbourne?

    • Aldi has those prepacked ones, 500g for $4

  • +2

I was such a tightass not wanting to pay extortionate prices that we started to buy "chipped dried" bananas.
probably imported but about half price to current prices.
However didnt taste anything like the real Aussie Ripe Banana…..

  • -1

I don't see how this is a bargain, most fruit markets sell them for $4.99/KG or less…

    • Even at fruit markets here in Sutherland and Canberra, they're normally $12.99 or more.

Specify your markets please so everyone else knows.

      • +1

Sydney Haymarket at CBD area, going for $4 - $7 depending on time and quality of the bananas. At closing time on Sunday, you can get a basket of black looking or overripe ones for $1

    • which year and country? and are you sure it's not fake/used bananas? or did you fake receipts to price match at OW? :P

      • -4

Even Woolworthes in Manly has them for $5.99/KG, Ginos Fruit Market has them for $4.99/KG, Manly Fruit Market has them for $3.99/KG, Manly Farmer's Market has them for $3.99/KG also. I got some yesterday so before you be a smartass with your comments do your research. I was just posting to help fellow OzBargainers.

        • +1

No, you weren't helping anyone by telling them they could get it cheaper elsewhere.
You only help now that you have actually told them exactly where they can get them cheaper.

          There is a BIG difference.

        • +2

You said "most fruit markets", or is Australia made up entirely out of Manly suburb? How about posting where/when/how the first time round without being a tool about it? "help fellow ozbargainers" my ass indeed.

  • +1

Woolworths has bananas at $7.99 / kg. Got some today from st Clair

  • This is a bargain, I know I've been looking forward to a banana for a while..got some for $4.50 at my local fruit shop (Southport Park, southport) in qld and they never tasted sooo good!!

  • +4

for all the tightasses here, apparently bananas will help with your bowel movement.

  • thedriver there is a BIG difference between the information I have shared here in this bargain and what you and slowmo have shared.

    • +1

You only posted the prices for the other stores AFTER I asked you.
If you came forth with that information more willingly, I would have accepted it. Telling the world… 'Oooh, I can get it cheaper elsewhere', doesn't help anyone; it just big notes yourself.
However, telling the world… 'hey, you can get it cheaper at x, y and z' helps people, because now they know where to go to get a bargain.
So thank you for helping people.

      • Where exactly did you ask me….?All good I understand what you are saying that is why I shared the ones I knew off from the top of my head.

  • +1 for posting Banana deals Australia needs it

  • BARGAIN!!! LOL!!!

  • +4

Even at $6.99 I wouldn't touch them. I think all the supermarkets and shops prefer to let them rot rather than reduce the price. Btw, are we allowed to plant bananas in our backyard?

    • Offcourse you are.

    • +1

yes, you can plant bananas. you can even sell them.
but you should be in the right climate to grow them successfully.

  • Its sad when in europe in the middle of the winter imported bananas cost about $1 AUD. We grow them here in Australia and we pay this much

And The Daily Telegraph can reveal there are at least 25 countries seeking to import produce, with applications before the Federal Government to import everything from papaya from Samoa, pineapples from Malaysia, bananas from Ecuador and avocados from Chile.

    • There is a news article there?

      • Once in a blue moon, The Daily Telegraph carries a news item!

  • I'm only paying 39p a banana here in London atm and having them everyday!
I'll be sick of them in a month.

    • Didn't the banana prices go up after the riots?

      • Riots must be well and truly over if they did cos I just saw a 5pack of bananas for 49p!

  • +2

My local fruit shop was selling them for $3.99/kg today. Am I missing the joke? Note: I never buy bananas, I just noticed it whilst driving today. Not sure what the regular price would be but $6.99 doesn't seem like a bargain at all.

Edit: The shop is Fred's Fruit Market in Edensor Park, Sydney in case anyone is nearby.

  • The Jakarta Post reported last week that the price of beef in Indonesian cities is already around 25,000 rupiah ($2.75) per kilogram, up from 22,000 rupiah ($2.45) prior to the ban.

    http://www.theaustralianeye.com/news/indonesian-beef-price-r…

Are aussie beef sold at cheaper prices in foreign countries?

    • Yes but not as good as local.. eventhough its from here. I'm from Indonesia and when I eat Aussie meat there, it just doesn't taste as good. Not sure why..

      • Is Aussie beef cheaper than local beef in Indonesia?

  • -1

Slowmo your being the big tool here contributing nothing worthwhile to the bargain that is on offer apart from your lame banana jokes.

  • +1

PLEASE BUY A TONNE AND SEND TO WA!! :( :( :(

    $5.99 at Harris Farm Rhodes
    http://www.harrisfarm.com.au/resources/Rhodes_23082011.pdf

they are generally coming down in price everywhere so shop around

  • They are $12.99 in the supermarket. Although… the quality is really high and the taste difference is obvious.

  • I think the reason why people were/are still buying bananas at the > $12/kg price tag is that deep down each Australian still wants to support the Australian farmers any way they can (and Bananas are just awesome as well). Most Aussies (myself included) want to help the farmers and if it involves spending extra then so be it (Most probably realise that it's the big chains doing the pricing but some don't really have a choice).

  • How is this a bargain, Banannas are only $3 a kilo at the markets all year round.
