        • Not necessarily Wolfy, at some point it always comes back to 'port' vs 'support'! ;)

  • brand, HP >>>>>>>>>>>>> MY tab

    hardware, HP>>>>>>>>>>> MY tab

but I didnt get the HP tab, all sold out in 5 mins

    • +3

Agree, but i prefer a holden with a full tank than a ferrari without fuel ;)

      • +6

Why holdens are shit regardless of who or what's in them

      • nah I still prefer the ferrari. buy a tank of petrol

      • holdens are sh1t

  • Wonder if these babys would sell if they went down to $50 :)

    • they'd need to start drop-shipping. :) The middleman would be untenable for that price. :)

  • Ever since my friend got this tablet in the online $99 sale a month or two ago, Ive been in the market for a tablet just for general around the house web browsing and then also just watching AVI files on the go.

I missed out on the HP Touchpad sale yesterday :(

But just wondering how do these go playing back AVI files on an SD card etc?

    • +2

It's works great streaming AVI's over wifi, so I would say it would be fine from the SD card.

      • Over WIFI, then even better when at home.

        Good to know. Thanks.

I'm assuming it will take High Capacity SD Cards (16GB plus etc)

        • +1

Yep, Got a 32gb Sandisk in mine.. works fine.

    • +2

works fine - I use moboplayer (free on android market) and plays back everything I've got.

  • SOLD OUT IN WA

  • +2

3GB for 3 months from previous deal, and it's way better than 6GB for 1 month, at least to me. BTW: I still have 2.4GB left after 2 months use (most time switch to WIFI at home), thus if they can offer a 1.5GB for 12 months bonus, it'd be better value to me.

  • Anyone used bluetooth on this? I have bluetooth in my car which sometimes is good for playing sound through so thinking I might be able to watch videos with sound through the car stereo.

Curious if anyone has tried this before?

    • +3

You could also try using an FM Transmitter.
Can get a very cheap unit, plug it in to the headphone jack, and then broadcast it on to an FM station which you could pick up on the car stereo !

    • +2

Your car's bluetooth must support the A2DP profile (most do). Shouldn't be a problem.

    • Yes, tried with Sony MW600 Bluetooth Stereo Earphones. (I am using Cyanogen Mod 7)

Completly fine with music. Song title doesn't display on MW600 screen.

Mostly ok with video using moboplayer - Occasional slowdown and audio glitch.. probably could be solved with overclocking. Doesn't occur using earphones directly connected to the unit..

  • what are these like for watching movies? can they handle big files?

    • As long as it fits on the SD or internal memory then yes. The stock Android video player can run most* extensions, without having to convert to MP4 (nudge nudge)

    • I used v1 my tab and it was terrible. Tried watching a 175mb file stored on my SD card through rock player and it lagged big time, and audio and video were out of sync. Forget stock android player, won';t handle avi.

      • Worked fine with my more powerful desire though.

  • How good are the battery? Is it comparable to the chinese tablets?

    • Reviews says it should on average last a whole day, but obviously using it to play games or watch movies, or using it with the brightness all the way up will drain the battery in a matter of hours.

Somebody on WP said it lasted 4 hours on continous video playback.

  • +1

I bought the Optus MyTab a while ago but find it's really hit and miss with video playback. Can anyone recommend good settings on Handbrake (or other conversion software) for converting videos to a format the Tab can play well? Same goes for PDF's it will open some but not others….very frustrating, any tips?

    • +1

Set the Video Codec to mpeg-4 in Handbrake.

    • I would imagine setting the encoding res to the native screen res of the MyTab & downsampling any multichannel audio to stereo would help too!

That said, my family & friends with MyTabs have no problems with most video so long as they kill all the unnecessary apps/processes & I have found that using Moboplayer really helps! :)

No such probs with my GT! :p

      • I use QQ player on a machine with similar specs with no issues. QQ player was a few months ago the highest preforming free movie player according to a few reviews.

It is very easy to use.

        • Thanks, will try those tips. I'm thinking it may also have something to do with my SD card, it was a cheap 16GB card I got of ebay for $11, it may be too slow?

        • @rd, cheers dude, I'll check QQP out.

@bb, Stumo had a good thread going on WP about micro SDHC performance, just do a quick search there for some useful info! :)

  • It would be awesome if they got some of their online stock into their stores. =)

  • thanks for the post, just bought one. Hopefully I get it before the weekend

  • What if i dont want to "be" with OPTUS, how much does it COST it "unlock" the thing ?

  • Been looking for an eBook initially but my colleague's Android powered HTC mobile phone got me wanting something with Android on it. This seems to fit the bill and the fact that it can double as a wifi hotspot, can be easily unlocked and has decent battery life… well, now I can use the net at most places I go.

  • What I would really like to do is connect one of these to wireless temperature sensors and turn it into a weather station, anyone have any ideas?

  • +2

I never cared for these portable 'touch devices'. I'm more of a traditional computer guy but the recent price falls have made them a compelling purchase for a bit of mobile computing, media player, coffee table internet in the lounge room, toilet use for severely extended periods of constipation…How many more uses?

    • +1

      eBook Readers
Really useful as when you have pdf, reading on computer's aren't that great, but on a tablet its great!

  • Resistive touch screen, do not want.

  • -8

WAIT LEMME GET THIS STRAIGHT… is it locked or unlocked? (sorry cannot be bothered to check through 2 pages of comments to see if someone else said it)

    • locked but easily unlocked…..

    • +2

      ctrl+f and type "unlocked" :)

  • May I ask has anyone try unlocking this tablet using the "calculator" -
    http://www.nextgenserver.com/calculator/

As i am really interested in one but really don't wanna pay $80 for unlocking it thru optus, thanks kindly

    • +4

Yes that has worked for me every time. Choose "ZTE" under service, then choose "ZTE Blade Andriod" undel models.

      • Thanks kindly

    • I have! Guess what!? it works ;)

  • A question for those who have this unit and have been using wifi tethering with this.

When you enable wifi tethering, do you normally get your connection disconnected once the MyTab goes into sleep mode? (i.e. low power). I have been having this problem on mine. I have tried to run Wifi Lock Free but that didn't seem to make any difference.

It is running CM7 by the way.

    • +4
      • +2

        You legend, it worked! Thanks.

Now MyTab can go on trips with me. :)

    • How CM7 compare to others?

      • CM7 runs a bit faster, but there's the odd bug here and there. Didn't try the stock upgrade though as I upgraded from 2.1 straight to CM7, so can't tell you how it compares with 2.2.

  • just wondering if ds store sell this item as well, as i have bought wish gift card from my amex card already (20% off after cashback from amex). on the website said online sale only. and now dse website is down by the ozbargain power

    • +1

Lol same here. I had 100 dollars worth of gift vouchers to spend. =)

      • +3

AFAIK When I bought one earlier, it gave me the option on checkout to enter in Wish Gift Card / Voucher details etc if I had any which I did not.

        • Online only at the moment.

  • Just wanted to check if this thing takes SD cards, micro SD cards, or both?

A lot of people here mentioned SD cards but I can only see micro SD being supported in reviews.

    • micro sd max 32gb

      • I am assuming 32GB SDHC micro will work…correct?

    • From memory I think mine came with a 2gb micro sd.

      • User manual is on the micro sd card.

        • Thanks guys.

Will probably stick with the 2Gb micro SD initially and wait for a 16Gb or 32Gb card to be on sale.

Can't wait for this to come in the mail!

  • +5

This will get the most use as a toilet tab….. Trust me
Also battery life is awesome. I highly recommend people get this. Even if it is more than the original deal of $99.

( I am fairly certain that the front thing people think is a camera is a proximity sensor and light sensor)

    Enjoy!

  • I have V2 Optus as well as Telstra tablet and have played with HP $99 tablet yesterday all day..
Telstra is better then optus for games as it has better CPU and also has nice pull out stand which is extremly useful. + front facing camera
but overall optus is better tab as it has faster interface, came with Android 2.2 out of the box and has waaaay better screen and battery life. 3g, gps etc still standard.

HP on the other has is marvelous, better than two above. Very very very nice screen, smooth and comes with 16gb of internal memory. but is bulkier 10" screen no GPS or 3G and therefore not suitable for everyone..

    • +2

Thanks for the low down on the pros and cons of each device. I think the MyTab is definitely the way to go for me… I need a PDF reader and something for checking work emails when I'm on the go. Work might be giving me mobile data on my work phone so I'd just pop the sim in the MyTab. I can also use the MyTab as a wifi hotspot with my netbook. I'm gonna love this device.

      • +3

You'll love it more after you've root it
        :)

        • You'll love it more after you've root it
          :)

          which 1 you're using?
can you able to restore to optus for warranty?

        • @Powerevo, IIRC you can just re-run the free downloadable 2.2 Optus upgrade tool to restore it! ;)

      • +3

I've got a 7" Galaxy Tab (thanks Telstra) which is great; but I've got a host of friends & relo's with MyTabs & IMHO as an all-rounder when it comes to bang for buck they simply can't be beat! :)

The direct comparisons to the now extinct HP are unfair for the very reasons that snajper concludes with; the significant differences & various trade-offs on both sides effectively make them different classes of device IMHO! ;)

  • -2

all in all the touchpad is an awesome machine.. android will be ported very quickly as xda developers are offering a 2k+ prize which is growing by hundreds every hour as people donate. not sure why hp started to sell them so cheaply straight after their launch.. rumours are they are splitting the company up and needed collateral.

the my tab is old old tech. also doesn't play flash as the cpu is not powerful enough.

  • how do you know if you got 3gig or 6gig data sim?
my girlfriend called me before saying shes got hers delivered today!! So yeah "i activated online", but yeah it said $0.05credit and mentioned sweet fa about gigs and she reckons she cant see it anywhere on packing or sim thing about what gigs?

    any ideas??

    • Mine has arrived as well… couldn't see anything indicating the 6Gb data either. Haven't activated it as I have no use for 6Gb as yet… going to use my Amaysim account for now as it needs a recharge anyways.

  • Hey All,

For those who have received thiers, is it a V2 or V9?

    • Mine's a V9

      • Yep same. Have you opened yours and will you keep it or request a V2?

I wonder if V2's even exist?

        • +1

ZTE V2 does not exists. This one is a ZTE V9 (version 2). There is a ZTE V9+ which has a capacitive screen.

        • I think the only thing V2 about it is they have changed the included data that comes with it, the tablet itself is no different at all

        • Cool, fair enough,
          Thanks for the details

  • So people, what's the expiry you get on the 6gb data? I hope not 30 days…

    • No idea. I know that my sim card expires in a year's time so I have a while before I need to use it.

Have you activated yours and got confirmation that there's 6Gb of data? I can't see any sign of this from the contents, nor does it state it on the DSE website.

      • I haven't got one yet…
Just wondering. 6gb with say 6months expiry would be pretty cool.
I get 3gb a month on my iPhone but meh.

        • I hope there's 6 months expiry… some months I'll use more and some months I use less.

According to the sim card booklet, 6Gbs has 60 days before expiry. The cost is also quite high.

Personally, I'm not sure I'll continue with Optus. Much prefer Amaysim's setup where the sim needs to be recharged every 90 days to stay active and 1Gb data packs cost $9.90.

        • That's cheaper than uni internet, sad.

        • Yeah, I stopped using internet from uni a long time ago. Free dial up was nice when I was a poorer man and free wifi on campus is pretty standard but their ADSL options are just cr@p.

Given that Woolies and Dick Smiths gives an additional 30days before expiry on their Amaysim recharge vouchers (see the follow WP thread I've created:)

          http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum-replies.cfm?t=1762622

and I barely used 100Mb off my last 1Gb data pack, I think Amaysim haa got my service for a while.

        • No free wifi here, we have to log on to our student account where we get $20 of credit a semester (~1gb).

        • I see why you're saying uni internet is expensive for you then… in which case, Amaysim will be MUCH cheaper for getting internet at Uni once your $20 credit expires. And you'll have a Optus MyTab to use as a hotspot!

        • i got 6GB of data for 30 days. it would be a steal if it was for 6/12 months :)
          http://oi52.tinypic.com/2lb094.jpg

        • Thanks for the confirmation on the period the data is active for. I suppose 30 days is pretty standard for the data included in a bundle. My Virgin wifi dongle had 4Gb with 30 days exp as well.

I think I'll top up my Amaysim account first so that the sim stays active for another 90/120 days and activate the 6Gb Optus Sim on a month I know I'll have a lot of work field trips. Might use up most of that 6Gbs then.

    • Looking to get an answer for this too. Haven't activated mine yet as I have the SIM from the first batch still going.

  • -3

    Great specs and price…

But these tablets are utter rubbish in terms of reliability. Purchased one, within a week wouldn't turn on, exchanged for another, 3 days burnt out, final one another week and gonnneeeee - ended up just getting my money back.

Save up and get an ipad!

    • +3

      mine has passed successfully the 1 week-no-turn on+ 3days burnt-out! :)
A friend of mine has got 3! All of them, apart from the back cover scratches, perfectly working for more than 3 months every day use!
On the other hand, i suppose you get what you're paying for ;)

      • +5

There's at least four MyTabs now in my extended family, and just as many among colleagues & friends, not a single issue or return in all the months they've had them! :)

As for getting what you pay for and the supposed perception of 'quality', Apple fanbois like agrima really have short memories: http://www.theipadguide.com/content/top-10-ipad-2-bugs-probl…

For a device costing around 500% more, I'd be expecting it to be significantly better than it is: http://www.ipad2price.com.au/ipad-2/ipad-2-comparison-with-o…

Agrima is full of it, I suspect s/he never had one at all; "burnt out" sounds like trollspeak for 'buy Apple'! :p

        • +4

Agreed. I've had three V9s for various reasons and absolutely no issues. Rock solid. Best $100 I ever spent on technology…

        • -1

Stewballs seems to be quite an appropriate nickname for you…

I don't appreciate the personal attacks one bit. (Anyone can be a hero behind their pc)

I purchased my V9 from Big W as opposed to forking out and getting an ipad and had a very bad experience with it. Multiple burnouts / non booting. One of the returns I upgraded with the cyanogenmod as well.

Was nifty whilst it worked and if it hadn't burnt out would still be using it, but now I have an iPad, and once jailbroken the user experience is much better than anything else I've used (including the V9 and other android tablets).

        • -1

No personal attack mate, you're probably a very nice bloke; but I still reckon you're full of it! ;)

          Burnouts??? Gimme a break! :)

    • +3

Ipads are built to die, you can never change the battery, open it easily and you will be a slave to Apple for as long as it lives. Best to get a ZTE V9 mate, can't go wrong.
