The Guard

THE GUARD is a comedy-thriller set on the west coast of Ireland. Sergeant Gerry Boyle is a small-town cop with a confrontational personality, a subversive sense of humour, a dying mother, a fondness for prostitutes, and absolutely no interest whatsoever in the international cocaine-smuggling ring that has brought FBI agent Wendell Everett to his door.

However, despite the fact that Boyle seems more interested in mocking and undermining Everett than in actively working on solving the case, Boyle finds that circumstances keep pulling him back into the thick of it. First his tiresomely enthusiastic new partner disappears, then his favourite hooker attempts to blackmail him into turning a blind eye, and finally the drug-traffickers themselves try to buy him off as they have every other member of the local police force.

These events unwittingly offend Boyle's murky moral code. He realises that he needs to take matter into his own hands, and the only person he can trust is Everett. And so the scene is set for an explosive finale.

  • Awesome, note this is for tomorrow Monday night.

    Luv it :)

  • I finally got one!

  • Nice, only just found out about this site thanks to yourself and OB. Cheers! Seems like the movie got good ratings too!

  • I saw this at last weeks preview. Very funny movie and well worth seeing.

    • Agreed, really good film - would suggest this one is well worth seeing (even if you can't get a freebie)

  • saw this at collaroy last sunday, great movie highly reccomend it.

  • It seems that after we go the cheap Red Rooster, they're spiting us by giving all the other states a free movie

  • -7

And a free middle finger salute to Hobart and Canberra.

    • +3

And what, by saying that you are doing the same for Darwin?

      • +1

        Whoops, yep, I forgot Darwin.

And I can't update it either.

I'm such a hypocrite. Sorry, Darwin.

        • The Canberra preview was last week - and was botched. See hereunder.

  • Saw this at the Canberra preview last week. The local cinema managed to mangle the event (one reel shown upside-down and backwards - then resumed missing a slab of the second half of the film). Despite that, it seemed like a really good film.

I can see why so few cinemas bother with using 35mm prints anymore - must be hard to get people who can run the complicated projectors. :-(

    • +2

As a former projectionist, I just don't understand how such things can happen, unless they are pattering the film with a blindfold on! And even then, the different sides of the film feel different, and taste too, but that probably shouldn't be the usual test…
There really is no excuse for putting a spool in backwards.
The main reason that cinemas are going to all digital, is because that way you can have a teenaged 'manager' running 16 screens from a pda, and not need anyone upstairs anymore, which is sad imho

      • Agreed. I thought that it was a very poor effort. I've tried to resist the temptation to 'join the dots'.

Even if there was an error made, it should have been pretty straightforward to fix. As it was, there was no apology for the missing part of the film. It was quite strange seeing the climax of the film without the lead-up.

ShowFilmFirst should have been mightily annoyed to have their preview compromised in such an amateurish fashion.

        • Unfortunately if that specific error is made, it isn't an easy fix. Minimum time off screen would be about 20 min to half an hour, and that is best case scenario.
It involves partially breaking the film down, winding the backwards spool through, and then hoping there is enough room on the platter to put it back together properly without a full rebuild.
Which cinema was it if you don't mind me asking?

        • (Reply to Tulkn's 2nd post - no reply option for that one)

Didn't realise that it was that complicated. I suppose that you'd need to have space and equipment to fix it up - maybe they didn't even though there was a 15 minute 'break' while they sorted themselves out.

Cinema was/is in Manuka. Google is your friend.

    • I went to a free screening once where the print melted. It looked really awesome but delayed the screening by 15 mins while they reloaded it only to have it happen again. It was delayed again before it finally ran unmelted, it was a 2.5 hour film (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1149362/) so that was my afternoon gone.

  • Great post, just got 2 tickets for Sydney event. Thanks

  • great movie. saw it at norton st last weekend.

  • yeah saw it last week through the same deal and it's pretty decent movie

  • No tickets left

    • +1

You tried to get tickets just as the movie was about to show?

Awesome movie by the way. Totally recommend it.
