Car under 10k

Looking for a car under 10k for a first car, preferably sedan or an SUV that's not too old and something not too expensive to run. Would just use the car for short commutes I am only a teenager. Would prefer the car to be less then 10 years old and fewer then 250k kms

Any ideas would be appreciated.

Increase your budget by between $69k and $71k and get an AMG Mercedes.

    Tried the “search” function?

    Need more info.
    Have anything you like already?
    You want Korean, Japanese, German?
Is it for commuting or for UberEats/pizza delivery?
What do you plan on carrying in it? People, tools, surfboards?
What features would you like it to have?
Do you plan on taking it anywhere, long trips, off road?
Do you want a good car, but with heaps of km, or a shit car with low km?

Camry or Corolla will be the standard “sedan” response. (Until all the VW/Subaru fanbois turn up)
RAV4 or Hyundai ix35/Tuscon for SUV.

    Cars to avoid;
Mercedes Benz and BMW. (Probably throw VW, Audi and Skoda under that bus as well.)
Anything with “Made in France” on it.
    Craptiva
    Jeep “anything”
    Chrysler
Anything with “Made in Italy” on it.
Rebadged Daewoos (ie: anything Holden made in that price bracket that isn’t a Commodore)
    Dual clutch Ford Focus

I'm not allowed to say anything about "new users" because I got in trouble last time I pointed out that a new user may have been trolling. So now I have to treat everyone like they are honest, genuine and well intentioned.

And I was wrong, because that user has gone on to become a very highly regarded and valued member of this website.

Sorry, Thithlord, you were right. This user has gone on to become a great, contributing member of our community, so I was wrong to point out that they were a new user and possibly trolling…

Yeah calm down I ain't trolling

Yeah easy mate I am a new member just looking for some advice

This reply should be stickied or something

    • Sorry mate should have been more specific. It was my first post so I wasn't too sure. Thanks

      • So… are you going to get more specific?

        • I edited it

          • @dylatronn: Again, vague on the details

Basic search. Feel free to add your own variables beyond that. Don't even know what state you're in

          • +1

@dylatronn: Agree with Spacebace, not enough real info to determine what sort of car will suit. There are too many varieties of cars avaaible less than 10yo and 250k km.

Go and have another looks don see what STYLE of car you want. Then come back and revise your post. You CANNOT her a sensible suggestion without asking for a shape and size category. Ie small hatch, medium wagon, compact SUV etc.

            • +1

@Euphemistic: Or at least… “these are the 4 cars I have narrowed it down to… what do you think would be best or any other suggestions similar to these…”

              • @pegaxs: Especially as generally for a first car, you know what you like and don't like

  • +1

I did the easy part. Now go on carsales and do some research and see what you like. Come back with a few suggestions and people will help you out.

You will be getting an old car for that price. Doesn't mean it won't be good.

    • Thanks mate sorry it was my first post so I wasn't too sure what to write. Just trying to get some vague ideas as I still need to save a bit of money up

Under 10k and you want something decent? Probably a Corolla.

    • -2

Corolla not really decent, more so just extremely reliable cheap to run. For under 10k you can still get an older luxury Honda or Lexus. Though I wouldn't recommend it if money was the main priority.

    Here you go.
    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/search/node/first%20car%20type%…

You'll probably end up buying used - can't go wrong with an asian made car but avoid ones affected by the takata airbags recall.

Make sure to do a ppsr report AND a mechanic to check it AND get an appropriate level of insurance.

  • Lexus LS430

  • You can get a base model Territory diesel for about that price if you are okay with something 9 years old.

  • Sedans will be cheaper than SUVs.
Falcon or Commodore will get a nice car at that price, but thirsty if you do a lot of kms, but they are cheap to fix if anything goes wrong.

  • Need more info on your expected usage. Otherwise you’ll get ‘Corolla’.

10k will get you a newish small car, an average age medium car or an older suv. What you choose will someone on you risk ranking of new vs old.

Here's the biggest favor; Newest car on the sales for your budget. End thread. In future add more info, be more specific.

    • Thanks mate. Was my first post and didn't have much idea of what to put on there

  • don't waste your time on this.. mod should close this thread as question answered

      Chill mate

  • How about Lexus IS type? Beautiful and comfy drive. It will last a long time.

  • Old forrester for a growing young family is what we had.

As a teen I was lucky enough to get a old hand me down colt. It was great. Not sure if anyone remembers the super shift transmission? Came with hi - low on a 4 gear stick shift! Sportier than my boyfriend's at the time beaten down 70s commodore.

Nothing to write home about either of those but why not just go with a cheap yaris as a teenager? The modern colts are so ugly and you won't get a lot of looks in a underpowered mirage.

  • FR, RW or AWD? What's important, reliability? Running Cost? Age? Safety? Manual or Auto? Sedan and SUV or almost on either spectrum, why SUV? Your a teenager and want to add to the road pollution with unnecessarily high and larger vehicle? Is there a reason for that? Will you go off road? I'm just listing more specifics off the top of my head in no particular order, just to try and make you think about editing this again or trying from scratch after more research perhaps?
