I have no idea what this is or why I'd need one…

    • Buy first, ask questions later. It's the OzBargain way…

  • Nothing against OP but why z-wave items are so damn expensive? and these been around for while.
    https://tecworld.com.au/collections/lighting-power/products/… $89 RRP
but for $20 you can get a power socket that support both google and amazon echo system.

    • Is it because Australia needs to use a different frequency for zwave compared to the rest of the world due to a conflict with frequencies used by Vodafone?

      • Well US version is 50USD RRP, I don't think that is the issue. All I see is that due to high price more and more ppl start using wifi enable devices than Zwave, way cheaper.

    • Zwave is all about connectivity with it's mesh network, instead off wifi and it also offers a lot more module types.

      • That doesn't mean much in technology, classic case, remember the days Betamax was better than VHS.
Even clipsal now start using bluetooth for switches, they did try Z-wave. Even zigbee is cheaper, that would be a fairly comparable technology.

        • Zwave is a better technology for complete home automation (not just individual outlets). It has more devices available than Zigbee (which is an open standard) and is a much cheaper solution than traditional hard wired automation like Cbus.

Bluetooth and Wifi are shorter range 2.4Ghz which rely on your phone or a router, where these are ~900Mhz and act as repeaters for themselves to a hub. Wifi devices also tend to need a constant cloud connection, so no internet, no control.

After looking at Clipsal's bluetooth Im not impressed with it needing a phone to operate standalone switches. Zwave does need a hub like Vera or Fibaro and but can then operate offline, as well as use persistent high level integrations.

My understanding is that unlike Zigbee (which is a commercial standard run by a consortium https://zigbeealliance.org/about/ ) ZWave is owned and operated by a single company (Silicon Labs) who charge handsomely for using the tech. In my opinion that company is doing a great job at making their standard obsolete but that's their call to make.

  • No Fibaro implant module?
