There's a reason why these are all so cheap right now: the transfer rates are terrible for the drive size.

  • +3

This is not half price. This is 25% price increase from December.

    • who else has this on back order ? I ordered 2 in that deal from HN
I'm wondering if I can walk in store, pick up two of these and show them that I have already paid and walk out !

  • LOL would you be better off with this : https://www.harveynorman.com.au/sandisk-cruzer-blade-64gb-us…
64gig for $10 on right now.

    • +2

Depends if you actually need 64GB. I’m looking to make a recovery drive so 32GB is good. Why pay more if you don’t need it?

      • Fair enough

      • +2

Then 16 GB will also suffice for recovery disks? I got few 16 GB when they were $2. Not sure if they are still at that price.

        • +1

Unfortunately not in my case - available space on a 16 GB drive is not actually 16GB. I’ll let someone more techie than I to explain that!

I got a $2 16GB drive just after Xmas too and the recovery media creator won’t accept it…

          • @kelea: Thanks. I hadn't tried yet so will watch out for this hiccup. Microsoft recommends 16 GB USB drive.

      • +2

You can dump a bunch more drivers onto it :)

    • +1

Actually you'd be better off with this. 64gb for $8.78

  • this are great if you use them to replace CDs (in other words change data on the drive only so often) write speed on them is terrible.

      12-year-old son's new PC

It's not the USB, it's your son downloading malicious crap.

    • +5

There's no 'buyers beware' because your comment makes no sense.

Do you think these USB sticks come pre loaded with viruses?

If your your 12 year old son has a virus then you need better antivirus software + education on what sites are safe.

      • -6

It's possible they may have loaded viruses onto the USB prior to shipping I believe.

I bought him a new PC and a new USB and we haven't had a problem since.

        • I'm going to assume you are lonely and ozbargain is your single only option of communicating with people.

    • +3

I can almost guarantee it's the 12 year old in that equation.

    • Update, update, update, keep those Microsoft updates going! They are half the battle in keeping your PC safe.

That being said, your son might be safer on an Android based system (get him a little Android box to plug into the 2nd HDMI input on his monitor) if he wants to browse 'those' sites… then use his actual computer for study

    • Trying to share potentially important info about dangerous corporate behaviour, not sure why I get negged for that…

      • +6

Because you are sharing misleading behaviour caused by a 12 year old not being warned about downloading shady executables, probably to mod Minecraft (the worst culprits).

I would have bought close to 1000 USB flash drives over the years, and not a single one came with a virus.

Used USB drive on son's new PC.

      Son got viruses.

We are not seeing the link between using a computer and your son's multiple health problems. Has he consulted an immunologist?

  • USB 2.0 Lul

  • Verbatim USB 2.0 32 GB = $4.66

    Is this any good?

    https://www.officeworks.com.au/shop/officeworks/p/verbatim-3…

    • I saw that but have never used Verbatim for flash drives. Interested to hear from any who have? Think they’re known for making blank cds/dvds back in the day?

My experiences with sandisk has been good so I’d be happy to pay the extra 30-40c. Thanks for raising this though.

i bought one for school back in 2010's - one of those push out ones, still worked for couple years until i lost it.

though it was one of those push-out ones and kept sliding when i trying to plug in, which i assume the pusher outer thing just started to become looser

Be aware that the USB port is plastic on these, I find it wears through and splits after not that long.

  • Paid $4 last week
