Sony Ericsson T250i Prepaid for $29 on Virgin Mobile!!!

170

Virgin Mobile is selling this phone for $29. Used to be $79 last week. Better be quick. I reckon the Bean Counter deal has one of the best prepaid rates in Australia.

You pay 10c per minute for national calls (plus call connection fee)
10c for national SMS
45 day credit expiry period

You can also use Optus, Boost, iSIM SIM cards with this phone without having to unlock it as they all use the Optus network.

You can network unlock the phone by topping up with at least $80 worth of credits if you want to use Vodafone or Telstra SIM cards.

  • Nice little phone there. Does anyone know that it is unlocked or not? Or can it be unlocked?

  • It does not say if the phone is locked to Virgin network. In their TOC at checkout, this is the only information provided:

    (e) Certain models of handset (as we may specify from time to time) are programmed to only operate on the Network. Those models can be reprogrammed to operate on other networks. To reprogram Your mobile phone call the Virgin Mobile Team on 1300 555 100. They will provide You with a reprogramming code within 5 business days. To reprogram a mobile phone purchased for use on a Prepaid account at the time you wish to do so, you must have topped up Your account with an amount specified by us from time to time.

However even if it is, it wouldn't be too hard to get something like http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.12167 for around $8-$9 so that you can use it with any sim cards.

This is an absolute bargain for people that wanting a spare/second phone. Although please note that this phone only has basic functionality and doesn't have all the bells and whistles of a higher end phone. It doesn't play mp3, has a camera that is almost unusable (0.3 mpx), can't install games, no bluetooth, no memory card, etc. It's just a phone that brilliantly lets you to make and receive calls, and cater to your SMS and MMS needs. Oh and surprisingly, it has an FM radio too. Other than that, don't expect too much.

At $29, it's an absolute steal. I just got one for a 'holiday' phone to use locally in foreign countries with their pre-paid sim cards. :)

    • Virgin mobiles can be locked to Optus or to just Virgin. Can anyone confirm which one this phone uses. I have isim (Optus) and this would be good backup if Optus sim lock.

      Thanks

BTW the MoneyBackCo reward for joining Virgin prepaid with handset is $3.50 (remember to clear all cookies etc as instructed by MBC)

      • So, purchase through money back is online only? any postage fee?

        • Is the MoneyBackCo rebate $3.50 or $21 as advertised above? Because if it's $21 I'll definitely be getting one!

          • @cyssero: prepaid mobile with handset purchase is only $3.50 whereas $21 is for contract deal

  • no postage :)
    I just bought 2

hope its not locked…i guess you can ring up and ask them for the unlock code because it was never stated as being "locked to the network" for this particular model at any stage of the order.

  • probably shouldve read the specs first, lol oops. oh well, a good present for mum maybe :)

for other ppl's interest: this phone only has 2MB internal memory (non expandable, ie. no card slot), 0.3 MP camera, and NO bluetooth. I guess you can't expect much for $29.

oh and I have NO idea what comes in the box. Probably charger and handsfree - prolly not USB data cable.

    • LOL. Hence why I posted the above. :)

But for $30, what more do you need besides a functional phone that allows your to make/receive calls and basic SMS? Those are about the only things I use on my mobile.

  • anyone be able to confirm if this can be unlocked without charge. Pauly or others can you try requesting an unlock code??

    Thanks

    • Unfortunately, I don't have any other GSM sim cards. I'm with 3 and the phone does not support 3G networks. :( I'll try to see if I can grab a sim card from a mate to check if the phone is locked. If it is, I'll try requesting for an unlock code and let you know. :)

      • Thanks - alternatively you can just request an lock code to see if they will give you one. If it doesn't need it they the service people will probably tell you as they wont need to send you one.

        • I called their support for this phone. They said 80$ topup required to get it unlock. Once we topup 80$, she said, virgin will make a courtesy call to give the unlock code.

          • @mawinmawin: thanks

          • @mawinmawin: I can confirm this as there's a disclaimer at the bottom of the phone box:

Note to self: Pre-paid phones are secured to our network & can be released after topping up with $80 on your new service. All rates apply in Oz . Free Text: Fair use policy applies. Fees/cancellation may apply for excessive use (over 3000 text per month). Min. balance of 1 cent needed. See virginmobile.com.au for details.

  • I've spoken with them in the past (so this might not be current). Anyway, it used to be that their phones in general would be locked to Virgin and that after having spent $50 (more?) on prepaid cards, the phone would be unlocked.

But I can't confirm if that is the case these days or for this phone.

  • Has anyone found if it's locked to optus or virgin?
