Asus VivoBook Flip 14-Inch i3/4GB/128GB SSD 2 in 1 Device (Was $898) $548 + Delivery ($0 C&C) @ Harvey Norman

160

Not sure if this is a great deal or not, but seems to be the pick of the bunch for sub $600.

If anyone sees a better deal going, let me know as I'm about to pull the trigger on one for my daughter.

Not sure if the memory can be upgraded or not, but it ships with Windows 10 S and the screen is 1080p.

Looks like a decent deal from a bricks and mortar store. Would hope the Ram is up gradable though for most punters.

    Nice first post.

  • Cheers, from my limited recent research in store, it seems they are shipping a lot with soldered RAM. Not sure if they have an extra slot though.

    ASUS says:

    4 GB LPDDR4 2400MHz SDRAM Onboard Memory, 1 x SO-DIMM socket
    8 GB Onboard Memory, 1 x SO-DIMM socket

So I think that means there is one SO-DIMM socket on the motherboard, so you can take the 4GB out and replace with a larger DIMM some RAM soldered to the motherboard and a spare SO-DIMM socket.

I think your own correction is right. 4gb soldered on and one ram slot up to 8gb, so max ram would be 12gb.

may not be the same but the 15.6 vivo came with soldered + 1 sodimm slot. so upgrade option is 4 + 4/8GB

  • Seen a lot of people talking about buying laptops for their kids to take to school. What’s the deal? Do kids need to bring laptops to school now?

      ok boomer

they've need laptops since the end of the DER program back in say 2013/4…

        2013/14…… boomer….. 🤔

Not necessary but saves her using mine all the time for projects etc. They have shared Chromebooks at school.

      • +1

It depends on the school, some required Macs (yeah I cant explain it) but most just needed a Win10 unit.

Apple uses schools to get noobs into the Apple ecosystem.
          Get 'em young and dumb.

          • @Weshouldgetsushi: i have some good primary school memories of using a MAC computer. The class room MAC had glider and lemmings installed.

Macs in schools is about 20% ignorance and 80% ego of the school administrators. They offer absolutely zero educational benefit and zero technical support/ sys admin savings. They are an unnecessary economic barrier to education.

Outside of schools there are obviously some vocational advantages, but those are completely irrelevant to a school environment.

    • In ours Junior years require iPad (fkn stupid)

      Seniors use laptop.

      • Yeah. I knew about the iPad. Didn’t realise laptops was a secondary education requirement.

Kinda didn’t want to be called a boomer again for asking more questions. 😅

How do they actually use it? Are students pulling out laptops every lesson now instead of notebooks?

        • +1

          I don't mind you "boomer" :P

From what I understand it's mainly for digital textbooks (again, somewhat stupid imo) and usual Office applications 'work'

Windows 10 s is a slimmed down version of windows 10 pro, only able to install apps from the windows store and not any third party apps from the internet. Supposedly Helps lower end spec PC's performance stay fast . Not a bad idea kind of similar to the Chromebook but better ?

    • +3

You can actually do a one time switch from Windows 10 S to Windows 10 Home/Pro for free through the Windows App Store. You just can't go back to S afterwards.

  • need to find a one for kid

  • On a side note, how do you guys manage to connect a micro sim into these laptops? For example some tablets have 4G capability to use internet via the microsim slot, I'm not sure if there are USB dongles that can connect to these laptop to use the mobile internet? I see so many wifi adaptors on ebay but I wonder if those are to extend wifi connection and not for using mobile sim cards.
    Thanks!

https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/309235 is an example of the device you may typically use…. or use tethering/wifi hotspot on your mobile…

Hi mate, you can get a 4G USB adapter to plug in to your notebook. A standard wifi adapter is generally for older devices without wifi built in. You can convert a micro or nano to standard SIM using an adapter also.

For an ordinary home user, the best thing is to set up your Android phone into WiFi hot spot mode, then just connect your laptop to your phone. Saves you money and is one fewer device to carry around.

  • has anyone bought this and confirm that indeed its 4GB + empty slot?

person at Harvey Norman said that it is not upgradeable but there is no way to check on the Asus website as it's a different model.

    • I've ordered one but I'll have to wait for it to be shipped. Will advise.

    • ..

      • ?

        • Sorry, I cracked open the wrong laptop. Will open this one if you need me to.
