Comments / Feedback / Suggestions Thread 2020

New year, new suggestion thread. Yes I know there are still many pending "unresolved" from last year's suggestion thread, but please use this thread in 2020 to post your suggestions for new features, bug report, feedbacks etc. Please refrain from creating new posts for feature requests / bug reports — they will be merged back here. Also, please check this wiki page as your suggestion may already have been mentioned.

The majority of things you see, as well as policies on OzBargain were implemented based on user feedback. Please see the Site & Guideline Updates Announcement Thread to keep up to date with the changes/features that we implement as they are added.

And a duplicate button so you can change a little around and post it.

      • +1

        Yes. That was my thinking.

Plus. It could mention it’s a repost and provide a link to the old deal. This would be useful and often the comments have often asked questions.

        • +1

Or maybe when a deal goes from out of stock or expired to being back it can be in new deals again like a new post so more people can see it.

Security notices for publicly breached merchants.

E.g. if haveibeenpwned published a new breach, any affected websites are flagged here on ozb. Any deals posted will have a big red notice informing users that there might be an issue.

It's a bit of work tying the databases/data-feeds together but highly valuable imo.

A button that you can say I've followed through with this deal as a legit purchaser.
The ability to then track your 'OzBargain' Spending / Saving per month and interesting website /deal statistics. I would like to know what deals have saved the community the most money i.e. the most valuable.

Downvoting the sh-t out of this. I don't want to know how much I am spending on bargains. It would completely shatter every thought I have of this being an exercise in frugality.

    • Great idea. I like this in that, you can see who's brought an item and get feedback here directly rather than some fake reviews online.

Only because the ozb community is like family (weirdos and all) but my family.

On the otherhand, would be bad for marketing/spamming by dodgies.

      • Except majority of the people using this site dont login or have an account, i would like to see that enforced to some degree.

        • i would like to see that enforced to some degree.

As in forcing people to make an account?

          • @WoodYouLikeSomeCash: have an account and be logged in to see the deals / bargains. At least this way there is more chance they will partake in the community and not be a hit and run, which i think may play more with brodens.

    • I like this idea quite a bit because positive votes don’t necessarily translate to actual purchases. I’ve come across deals which get upvoted because it’s a good price and then see comments asking if anyone actually got the item at that price.

Would be nice to know how attainable some of these deals are so you can decide whether it’s worth the effort, especially when you need to physically go to stores.

    1. Ozbargain member entry tests - need to verify that users can actually identify a good deal instead of up voting like sheep.

    2. Ozbargain challenges - maybe have two people compete 8n bargain hunting on a weekly basis. See who lives truly like an Ozbargainer should.

    3. Ozbargain sponsored group buy deals

    4. $1 UHT milk should be considered a bargain

    • 4. $1 UHT milk should be considered a bargain

      What!? It's not? Since when?

I can remember the good ol' days when 69¢/L was the good bargain and 50¢/L was when you bought it by the pallet load! Nowadays it's rare to see it even at $1.

      • I remember when petrol was cheaper per litre than milk. 8(

    • The group buy idea isn't bad - @tightarse used to do a few arranged voucher codes from memory which is a similar concept without having the make sure everyone goes through with the purchase.

I would like to see improved search. Sometimes I feel that search by “Relevance” does not balance well deals that were popular with the deals that were recently posted. I remember having to switch to “by date” search mode to find a deal I was looking for.

    • +1

      Use option:titleonly

      • That option should be a checkbox, have previously wanted to do that, but didn't know it was a thing.

Have "Top Community Initiatives" section on the right of the page similar to "New Competitions" to allow people present the causes and get help as a way to give back and help out. We do great with posting rebates and grants for people affected by the current fire disaster but there is so much more potential. I know it is OZBargain, but finding a way to help someone together is similarly rewarding as finding a new deal and sharing it.

We have so much talent and great people here as I can often see by some of the posts, I am sure there is amazing untapped potential to bring people together and make world a little better while enjoying a good deal.

If anyone have any suggestions please free to jump in and add to the above. I feel my suggestion is a bit rough on the edges, but is in the right direction.

Keep That Handsome Owner Out Of Sight, He's Distracting The Female Employees

  • Do a live stream with me Scotty :)

Need to have another big meetup.

  • Would like to see a system to stop brodens, i reckon it should definitely be at least account based / logged in users see the deals at all or at least first.

The ability to search your own comments (unless this already exists and I'm just a dunce?)

Getting rid of the OzAnnoucement posts… like that one today

  • Have a bargain of the day where it’s like stickieD at the top of the deals webpage. Auction that spot off to the highest bidder and only allow it for very good bargains only.. oh man I’m brilliant, patent pending

    • +1

Highlighted deals are already a thing 😉

    • +1

Auction that spot off to the highest bidder and only allow it for very good bargains only

      So many issues there.

      1) What is your definition for 'very good bargains only'? There's enough heated discussion as to what even constitutes a bargain (see here for the latest example)

      2) OzBargain would no longer be the community that discovers and shares bargains if companies can just pay their way to be front and centre on the site.

    • An easy way to unpublished a comment

It is quite easy to unpublish a comment.

no 403 Access Denied page after doing so

That I can agree with, it would be nice if it could redirect to the thread the comment was on or even the OzBargain front page after deleting a comment.

    • Or at least no 403 Access Denied page after doing so

This has been rolled out this morning:

"Redirection for unpublished comments for logged in users"

An easy way to unpublished a comment

To delete your own comment, edit the comment and write 'delete' or similar and it will give you the option to self remove. If too much time has passed or there are replies, you will need to report.

      Thanks

Most of the edits were probably done by Power Users, and they do it to keep the site clean.

Not sure how it affects you, if they're editing to make it nicer so it doesn't become a shambles? It's their time and effort, not yours

This change on your post, took out the mods edit to link back and credit the original poster, yet you felt the need to remove it… why?

    • most relivant

We need mods/power users to fix spelling mistakes like yours…

Oxymoron. But there’s always one of you that takes the entire sentence picks a single word, and grabs your ankles to try and get brownie points for +1s haha

  • When revoking a vote on a deal generally from an accidental click from mobile. it also removes that deal from your voted deals.

    • +1

When revoking a vote on a deal generally from an accidental click from mobile.

In terms of the “accidental click” this happens to me a bit as well, it would be good if there was an extra pop-up that said “Are you sure” OR a checkbox next to the revoke button (meaning you have to click the checkbox before you can click the revoke button) would be nice.

it also removes that deal from your voted deals.

Correct, once you “remove” your vote that registers as a deal not voted on meaning it will not show up in your voted deals.

      • "Correct, once you “remove” your vote that registers as a deal not voted on meaning it will not show up
         in your voted deals"

pretty sure it shows up in my voted deals - that's the part i don't like

        • This has been rolled out this morning. When revoking your own vote, it will no longer show on your voted page

          Thanks

About the referrer, not sure if it is pure random or can it add in place some fair rule that no one gets picked up twice until everyone in the pool get picked at least once?

    • Random referrals are weighted to those who are active on the site. e.g. Someone who signs up to an account, puts their referral in, then never signs back in would get weighted less. We will be implementing a sorting to use least used referral for referrals that have limited uses per referral for stores that have this limitation. e.g. A store's referral system only allows a person to refer a maximum of 5 people.

Minimum time/comment requirement before you can create a forum post. Aim is to stop obvious bait/troll posts attracting a ton of comments and making the front page.

  • Limit on maximum number of deal comments users can make in a day to reduce the noise on the site

    • I disagree.

      • -4

I see there are issues with this idea but there is a noisy minority* claiming to represent the ozbargain community drowning out quality deal discussion. Maybe there is a better solution. The current voting system is not really delivering quality over quantity.

*seem like mostly younger males who come here for the comments and are probably logged in and therefore not contributing revenue.

Suggestion, mods take tomorrow off and forget all about gta5/game pass quarrels 😉

  • +2

I think a lot of good deals for products not popular with the primary Ozbargain demographic often don't make the front page and attract reasonable attention.

Deals on women's shoes (or women's anything) for example. A way to highlight these quality deals that don't attract the same upvotes as the usual Eneloops or SD cards would be nice.

A search function producing meaningful results! Am I the only one keep going back to Google to search some old ozbargain deals?

Say I'm after that Optus prepaid deal from last year giving 60gb for $120. Good luck finding that witb Ozbargain's search function.

Negsplanation would be cool - a dropdown menu of why you are downvoting someone.

    A variation of this…
    Negvotesplanation would be good too.
These "hear hear" lets drive-by negs go through too easily, at least it would give some justification to why a neg vote was cast against a deal.

  • +1

The ability to get cashback directly from the link on ozb - its a pain to have to jump multiple links and login in to a cash back to get a deal

Is there a way to tick a cashback service and then click the ozb link

Maybe this also opens the opportunity to have a strategic relationship for ozb to take a bit of the revenue for cashback services or create a cashback of its own

    • Maybe this also opens the opportunity to have a strategic relationship for ozb to take a bit of the revenue for cashback services or create a cashback of its own

OzBargain already serves affiliate links on deals for guests and signed out users. No point over complicating something that already works and wouldn't get off the ground.

      • Why wouldn't it get off the ground?

        • Why would cashback companies want to pay OzBargain? It just seems pointless to save a few clicks.

          • @Clear: As a user I would value the convenience
As a cash back provider they may gain more clicks which has value

    • That would be too close the relationship between OzBargain and the cashback sites to my liking. I believe the fraud detection process on cashback sites would also make it difficult. OzBargain has supported half a dozen cashback providers over the years, and I've actually suggested this when PricePal was MoneyBackCo — however the amount of data exchange required makes me uncomfortable.

Afterall I believe cashback sites have already provided a lot of convenience — browser extensions and apps etc.

      • +1

There are some pretty obvious troll comments, normally they are top voted and sticks out the most, more than genuinely helpful comments. comments like bikies, what did x say when you asked them? They generally do not, not meet commenting guidelines

    • -1

in more peaceful times, circa December 2012, all neg votes must fall in either of the 3 category

      • found item cheaper elsewhere, Site X linked here
      • the product supplier is shoddy eg fraudulent, no business details etc
      • the product is faulty, dangerous, very badly made etc

all other neg votes were invalid, and thus revoked

      and it was good.

Flash forward to 2020, the deal pages are an absolute wreck, filled with bandwagon negative votes based on the most random "ethical" justification and the comment pages are filled with virtue signalling numpties.
Sorry to say, I think the site owner & head admin here are reaping what they sow.

      • It was getting too time consuming and too inconsistent for moderators to decide whether a negative vote is valid or not. We aren't experts at everything. When we didn't remove votes, people complained. When we did remove votes, people complained. Many times it's a grey area. So we came up with a list of reasons that are invalid. Voting Guidelines. Negative voting has never worked well but it's probably at the best it's going to get, which is not great.

Opinions are always welcome on Ozbargain but we ask that users refrain from attacking others for their opinion and try to be respectful to each other.

        • What about just have no restrictions on negative votes but limit it to 3/day and still allow the community to revoke.

        • hi neil,
I take back the 2nd part of the comment then

all other neg votes were invalid and thus revoked

thus revocation is up to the community (intervention not required) but at least the rules/basis for Neg Votes are tightened so there should be less occurrence of people massively neg bombing any deal page they don't like.

  • Can you have a page with cheap international prices paid. Many ozbargainers travel OS and purchase products from duty free for example. I think it would be useful to have a updated page with the cheapest prices with dates purchased on a particular product ie watches, alcohol, perfume etc. If an ozbargainer is travelling they can purchase OS or at least make a fair comparison with an Australian product.
