[PC] Epic - Free - Yooka-Laylee and the Impossible Lair - Epic Store

2440

Another freebie.

This time it is Yooka-Laylee (and the Impossible Lair?).
It will definitely be a Yooka-Laylee game - most likely Impossible Lair as that was one of the games on a leaked, semi-accurate list.

Link is active from 3am on 1 January 2020.

Enjoy.

There is a free game on GOG right now too:

I'm overseas at the moment and just found out that we are prevented from posting deals between 2am-6am…

    • -3

Already posted it. But thank you for pointing it out.

My comment was made before you posted it, just saying…

I know. You made it while I posted - the notification came up.
Thank you for pointing it out - my comment was not meant to be mean.or negative in any way. I always appreciate useful comments.

Thanks for all your time and effort, Lysander. Much appreciated.

just saw sim city 3000 on GOG ($2.50) after obtaining the freebie, a game that I haven't played in years. Thanks :)

  • +2

Has anyone played this? It's got 78% overall on Steam, and seems be a heartwarming homage / shameless rip off of Banjo-Kazooie.

    • +5

I backed Yooka-Laylee on Kickstarter because it was being made by the Banjo Kazooie devs. I didn't enjoy it as much as I'd hoped to. The starting hours of the game were more fun than the rest of it and I didn't end up finishing it.

    • Yeah I bought it several months ago and got bored after an hour. It definitely felt faithful to the old Banjo-Kazooie games though.

    • Its good. I actually preferred the overworld adventuring to the 2d levels.

Not sure I cbf with the last level though. Tried it once then didn't go back. The difficulty is astronomically higher than any other level

    • Backed this on Kickstarter way back when.
When the game first launched I had terrible problems with the in game camera so I gave up fairly quickly. I’ve heard the issue has been fixed though, so it might be time to give it a go again.
From the little I did play, it was fun and a nice throwback but didn’t quite match up to Banjo Kazooie.
The new 2D game with the same characters that came out recently is meant to be quite good!

Why is it the Epic deals get to become "Highlighted Deals" on the daily email all the time? Are Epic paying OzB in their desperate attempt to become relevant?…

    • +2

      No.
It is because the deal is good and relevant to a lot of people.
Often you get a $40 US for free which is undeniably a great deal, whether or not you like Epic.
Keep in mind Epic also makes the Unreal Engine which many games use, very likely some of your favourite games, too which means Epic is and has been relevant for a long time already.

      • -1

I have very few favourite games, none of which use the Unreal engine, but that's not the point. The fact that these free games on Epic have to be rated by their approval rating on Steam should tell you enough about Epic.

My point really was about how it was so regular, and the upvoted numbers were far from the highest in the daily emails. Just looking for a fair go for ALL deals really…

        • -1

Look, not liking Epic and loving Steam is your prerogative.
But please do not talk about fairness if you compare a one year old store and a 15 year old that has been (and to some extent still is) very anti-consumer and is only implementing pro-consumer features if a court forces them too.
If you don't like gaming deals set your site to ignore them but don't try to be so negative for those of us who have interest in those deals.
And please don't make "funny" assumptions about Ozbargain being paid to highlight deals - this is not the case and one of the issues of the site.

          • @Lysander: Thank you for allowing me to NOT like Epic. But I never said I "love" Steam. I'm just no fan-boy.

I merely pointed out what looked to me like possible favouritism, which I think we ALL should do if we think something maybe wrong. I think that is the very basis of fairness.

Meanwhile, Neil has posted a more reasonable response below…

            • @papachris: More reasonable as in not so clearly pointing out the truth behind that very odd statement of yours?!?!🤔😆

    • We usually highlight deals that are highly voted by the community and are posted but start in the future as a reminder. We are an independent site and companies DO NOT pay OzBargain.

      See FAQ.

      • Thanks for clearing that up for me, Neil…

Actually pretty surprised by this one. The game only came out recently didn’t it?

      • +1

Just bought this on switch for $30. Would not have bought it had I known it was going to be free here. Disappointed.

        • It's a good rule of thumb to never buy any games on the switch that aren't exclusives. They're always like $30-$50 more than in online sales for PC (even other consoles' online stores are often much cheaper).

(It's broken all the time, though, people throw money at the Switch like crazy).

          • @ItsMeAgro: what if you want it available to play portable as well as on a TV? your rule doesn't work when you take that into account… yes other platforms are typically cheaper, but it doesn't mean you should only buy exclusives on Switch because of it.

I've rebought games on Switch that I already have on PC or other platforms purely so I have the flexibility to play them whenever and wherever I want.

          • @ItsMeAgro: Generally I do, but this game only just came out, frustrating that they just killed its value this soon after release.

It would be like if they gave out Fallen Order next.

Yooka Laylee is the spiritual successor to Banjo Kazooie btw. Complete with 90s style camera controls, it’s good nostalgia.

Note that impossible lair is a spin-off game from Yooka Laylee, I heard impossible lair wasn’t great.

    • Btw they did improve the camera controls since launch, I didn't have any major problems with the camera playing through the game.

Also from impressions I've seen online other than the impossible lair level which people feel is too difficult, most seemed to prefer Impossible Lair over Yooka-Laylee.

    • +2

It's not a spin off. It's the sequel. It's just changed into a side scroller

  • This is a pretty awesome freebie. I have it on switch and it's great, will definitely install it to see it look prettier on pc, haha. Happy new year!

  • +6

It seems Epic is continuing the weekly freebies for the time being.
Tomorrow we will get two games: one M rated game and one non M rated game.

The games are likely: Darksiders 2 and Steep

    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/509869

  • Was hoping for the first game actually :( Still grabbed it of course!

    • Me too! Doesn't seem to jump under $15 very often.

      • Not useful for PC but it does on Xbox One where it normally goes 75% off on every Team17 sale ($12.49) and it's also one Game Pass, also below $15 on recent PS4 sales.
