LIFX Z LED 2m Starter Kit $87 @ Bunnings or @ Amazon AU

760

I noticed that a number of places - including David Jones and LIFX themselves - had discounted these starter kits to $109 or $119 (from $129rrp) in recent days.

That started the inevitable race to the bottom for Amazon AU and Bunnings, who now have it listed at $87.00 which is their cost price before sell-though rebates:

https://www.bunnings.com.au/lifx-z-led-2m-smart-light-strip-…

https://www.amazon.com.au/LIFX-International-Adjustable-Mult…

I ended up walking into Officeworks for an easy price-beat at $82.65ea. Copy of receipt in case it helps anyone http://imgur.com/a/2FjkR8G

i got lucky and got the price beat from bunnings before they dropped the price to match amazon, now to wait for the extensions to go down, the strip is awesome

    • Extensions are $34 but hard to find stick

  • +1

What are the benefits of this over a Xiaomi strip?

    • +6

      not xiaomi

      • +2

        not designed in labour camps

    • +2

never seen the xiaomi strips but the reviews seem good though on youtube over the philips hue ones and below the lifx ones. the color reproduction on them are excellent

      • +1

I’d still rather have Hue’s bridge/Zigbee controlling my lights.

      • It’s true the colour is really rich. The software is a bit confusing (for lay folk) and the pairing process is dreadful. Not sure about other brands, but if you change your router (name) or you have a power outage, it can cause a huge headache. I’ve spent hours trying to get mine back on. And sometimes the schedules just don’t work. If I didn’t have such a large investment in them (80-100 bucks a pop throughout the house), I’d be jumping over to another brand

    • With these ones you can individually control each LED to make a rainbow effect.

      • +6

You can control each group of 6 LEDs together, and there are 8 groups per metre.

      • Can do the same on a WS2812b/SK6812RGBW strip via an arduino or ESP8266 for way less. ESP8266 will give you wifi, but need a logic level module if running the strips off of 5V (ESP8266 is 3.3V), so extra wiring, but stuff all difference in cost.

        • But without any colour mixing accuracy, if that's something you're interested in. Also, the SK6812RGBW whites are usually the dimmest whites you've ever seen.

    • +5

I haven't compared the hardware head to head. Can't comment there. But the LIFX app is leaps and bounds ahead of the janky Xiaomi offering.

I am an advocate for LIFX given the their transparent privacy policy and high standard of local after-sales support (once had a bulb replaced by them 6mths out of warranty).

Finally, I don't trust Xiaomi with my personal information (implied consent or otherwise) - let alone with them having access to my home network.

      • +4

It looks like you'd rather trust western governments to collect your info than eastern governments.

I have been running Xiaomi Yeelight Aurora Light Strip Plus for my stairs for a year now.
I got it for $40 when ebay had a $20 discount.

It gets turned on/off by trigger from Xiaomi Body sensor, so that I don't have to flick the light switch all the time when going up/down the stairs at night.

None of my information ever go to China servers because I use Blokada with a whole heap of host file blockers including the very nice jerryn70 GoodbyeAds Xiaomi Extension.

I also run my DIY Algo VPN server on Pi Hole. I can categorically say that nothing ever goes to China servers.

        • +22

          Hi,
I just turned them on & off for you. Please confirm.

          • -5

@Ulysses31: Correct. There are 3 ways you can turn on/off the Xiaomi Yeelight Aurora Light Strip Plus. Either :

Method 1) Manual on/off button or

Method 2) Xiaomi Mijia RTCGQ01LM Human Body Sensor (wifi only) or

Method 3) Xiaomi Aqara RTCGQ11LM Human Body Sensor (wifi + zigbee)

      • “ let alone with them having access to my home network.”

agreed but please consider implementing VLANs for all devices like this to protect your local devices, irrespective of manufacturer.

    • +3

I have LIFX bulbs, 1x Yeelight bulb and 1x Xiaomi Yeelight strip.

The LIFX app is better than the Yeelight app for sure, but not to a huge extent that warrants a major markup. The Xiaomi strip has a single button controller (on/off/hold to change between selected colours) which I use a lot as its beside the bed, but integrates nicely with Alexa and Google home for voice control alongside the Lifx so I rarely use the app.

I'd buy the Xiaomi over LIFX again unless LIFX was on crazy cheap sale.

      • mans right, yeelight is good value but if you can get lifx for good price then their is not many that can beat its performance

    • The LIFX strips are much brighter than those from Xiaomi. Ditto the bulbs.

  • Amazon has “international” in the description. Why?

    • LIFX includes a set of power plug adaptors to reduce the number of product SKUs

      • +1

the adaptors slide off the power brick so it has very small bulk and looks much nicer then having a adaptor

        • Yep! Most gadget manufacturers don't use this approach any more as it simply adds to the unit cost of the product.

  • Are these better than the Philips Hue ones?

    • Better in what way?

      • Better color output? Google Home integration? Automation? The sensors with Philips Hue just make everything so much easier

        • Have a look here

        • LIFX integrates with the Google Home application directly. If you want to have better automation control, I'd recommend using IFTTT, they have a few presets ready to go, but you can also create your own.

You can set timers to turn on at certain times of the day, when you're leaving home lights turn off, when you're near home lights turn on, sunset, when Uber's arrive etc.

I've been eyeing these off to add to my A60 lights in my bedroom for a few days now. I noticed Amazon had them for $87 around or before Christmas Eve.

      • Hue require the hub as well. Lifx do not.

If you are already on the Philips Hue hub, maybe less of an issue, but still should be considered for future upgrades/interoperability.

        • +1

The hub is a good thug. You can set your lights even when they are powered off.

    • +1

I prefer Hue because of hub. If too many devices are connected directly to my wifi I find that some devices sometimes don’t connect to home wifi. I need to disconnect other devices from wifi to connect my phone for example.

      • Sounds like a problem with your wifi router mate, might be time to upgrade that?

        • Maybe but is not that old

    • +3

Whenever I have had a fault (only twice) they sent out replacements no questions asked and gave me the newer model. Pretty great service and better than I have had from Australian companies

    • +1

I've only had to make one warranty claim with them and it was no fuss whatsoever…for an item that was just under 6 months out of stated warranty.

      • +2

+1 Same experience when 1 of 5 didn't work for me. Just sent it, didn't even ask for the faulty one back (I presume they just blacklist the ID so its useless anyway, but I was impressed by the trust/honour system)

    • +2

Give it up would you. U literally sound like a broken record on every lifx post. You are literally one of few people with negative experience. Plenty of people has had positive warranty experience including myself even with out of warranty bulbs.

      • -3

People have a right to know that LIFX doesn't care about Australian Consumer Laws. Light broke just outside 2 year warranty and was told to go buy a new one, case closed.

        • +1

Seemed to care enough to warrant my bulb and plenty of other people. If you think you are so right why don't you take them through the small claims court?

Or are you going to claim it is a waste of time because you know you will probably lose. It's a 60 dollar light bulb, not a 1000 one. How long something lasts is actually proportionate to what something costs. Since the cost of warranty is built into the pricing structure.

It's actually funny to see you neg all these posts that have different experience to you. Just shows how petty you are.

  • I've been keen for a long time, to try subtle halo behind the big screen TV, under various cabinetry, benches etc. Builders/sparkies charge beaucoup dollars. Price was WAY too high for my interest in a gamble. This looks pretty close!

    • I've recently been looking at this for bias lighting on a large screen, almost the same price!

      https://www.amazon.com.au/Luminoodle-Bias-Lighting-Backlight…

      • Cheap! And looks promising.
Thanks for the share. Maybe I'll grab both, and hand-me-down the least-preferred.

        • I'm just waiting for a decent cashback offering like the recent 12% before I pull the trigger on the Luminoodle

Should be able to operate the RF sensor via the broadlink RF controller for Google assistant too.

  • -4

Can get two of the 1 metre for only $68 - same length less $$$

    • +1

Yeah but that's without the smart controller that powers the strips, those ones are the extensions to add on to a kit

    • +1

Isnt that just for the strip?

      • +1

starter kit is the 2x1m strip with the smart control that powers the strips too, they should really rename it to lifx z with power brick instead of starter kit

        • +1

OK yep, you are correct. Thanks for the correction. Happy New Year all :)

  • +1

I've used this LED strip behind my monitor for exactly 1 year now. I've had no issues with it, works perfectly.

You need to use the smartphone app to turn it on, off, change colours etc which isn't as fast as using a physical switch, which is the only drawback.

    • I think I saw on their website recently that they're launching a physical switch as well.

    • do you use it as bias lighting?

      • +1

Yep. Works well as a bias light. But the kit doesn't come with the connector cable so you can't bend around corners easily out of the box.

  • What in God's name do you do with these things?

  • +2

For me an cheaper option would be:

Jinvoo Smart Wi-Fi RGB Light Strip Controlle for ~$16 @AmazonAU
Then whatever eBay $20 LED RGB strips to add in.

I don't understand the price of these, as they're not anything great.

    • Like anything, I suppose. Quality of design & components, support, warranty etc etc.
But how much that's worth is up to the buyer.
At this discount, and with how many screens every household has… I figure there's a place for different types.

If I was living the life I wanted, I'd buy all these varieties & post a detailed review. Alas, "modern day slavery" stops me. Soon… Soon.

  • These better than the $20 Cocoon LED WIFI kit from Aldi?

    • I think mostly the same. Both are 2 m, rgb, wi-fi. I just bought Aldi strip a couple of days ago and mounted it under kitchen cabinet, and have nothing to complain. It's bright, the hues are pleasant, the app looks nice and works reliably, google home integration and voice control also work perfectly. It also feels like a nice quality strip - all parts look neat, the adhesive is strong. I'd rather buy four of these than one Lifx.

      • Are the Aldi lights bring enough to use for food preparation in the kitchen, or are they more for decorative use? Do you know if the Aldi lights be extended?

        • +2

Everyone's requirements are different, but I'd say LED strips in general are designed for decorative use and are not meant to be used as a main light source. There's no mention of the extendability on the box or in the manual.

  • +1

The Amazon one says extension kit 4 pack

    • +3

It's an error in the listing. Appears correctly at checkout.

Edit: See also the product Q&A section

    • +1

I noticed that as well, however the product code is correct for the starter kit (LZHC2M4INUC07) and the contents include:

“LIFX Z (Starter Kit) Wi-Fi Smart LED Light Strip (Base + 2 meters of strip); Controller; Manual; Power Plug“

So appears to be confusing labeling rather than anything else.

  • Safe for under cabinet in the kitchen use?

    • I bought two for this very reason - I have seen LIFX advertise these for this type of usage

  • +3

Just got Bunnings to price match beam kit for $120

    • Cheers, I did the same.

    • Same :) cheapest ever

  • Thanks OP grabbed one. Was great for the baby room so in the middle of the night it can be a discreet low light so you can see what you are doing while changing it but keep the baby in a light sleep. Then during the day, you can have funky colours going to distract them while changing them.

Actually going to grab another one for underneath the bed.

    • At the risk of being perceived a freak…
Maybe check the colour temps & levels, as blue light affecting sleep has become a major discussion. I figure babies are more prone than anyone.

      Just a thought.

Anyone had any experience with the Arlec smart strip?

    https://www.bunnings.com.au/arlec-smart-5m-colour-changing-p…

    5m for $60

  • Can this be run from a 12v setup in a campervan?
Does it have to be run from a smart hub thing? Or could I have full control over smart phone alone?
Looks like it could be good for my campervan. Im currently in the market for a 12v setup

    • The mains wall wart pumps out 24v at ~1.2A. Running them at 24v would NOT be a good idea.

These units don't need a hub and, as long as they re on the same wifi LAN as your phone, you can control them without an internet connection via the LIFX app.

Just whack a small (30-50W) inverter in your campervan and go nuts with mains smart lighting ;-)

  • Anyone able to get these to work with Razer Synapse ? I'm thinking about RGB pimping my ride

  • Anyone know of a good outdoor option?

    • +2

The Sun is an excellent outdoor option during the daytime. Happy New Year! 🥳

I know this deal is expired now. But managed to score a lifx beam kit for $87.
2 stores website showed stock of these led strips but when I went to either, they didn't have stock. The lady at the last Bunnings asked me what I want to do, so I cheekily asked if they can do the beam kit for the same price. She scanned it and was like sure I can do that for you.

    • Well-played!

    • Cheers for that mate..are you able to upload the receipt by any chance and I might try my luck to see if they can honour one for me too..
