I'm thinking of getting a Koala.. 20,000 reviews and 5 stars? Hard to believe, but….
    https://au.koala.com/products/koala-mattress

    • Just had a look at the Koala ones. Not sure how I feel about a foam mattress… Been thinking of having a look around and seeing if I can narrow down what I need from a new mattress (current one is older than I'd like to admit). At an age now where my needs are changing. Was going to look at some local makers in Geelong before the bigger brand stores

Speaking as someone who just went through the process of try-return with Koala (and bearing in mind that this is simply one opinion) after I bought a Koala, I ended up with a pretty severe back injury which I can only put down to the change of mattress. My brother and mum both felt a slight pain in their backs after a single night on the Koala, while both my brother's partner and my partner did not, so maybe there is a genetic difference with our spines that made it worse, but prior to this none of us had issues with our back. There are plenty of good reviews which is why I ignored my instincts and just went for the trial personally, and I also persisted for several weeks through pain which kept getting worse (I was told there would be an adjustment period) against better judgment so it's largely my own fault but I would urge caution if you have any issues with your back regarding the Koala. After swapping back to the Ozmattress in the spare room things slowly subsided (Seems they have since closed or I would have re-bought through them)

The main thing that I feel contributed was the lack of pocket springs. This was the key reason I bought the Ozmattress over similar options several years back and a major criticism I have of the Koala. Another issue (which I is arguably worse as this affects everyone) is the lack of reinforcement around the edges of the foam. This leads to an issue where if you approach the edge of the bed, you will find that it tends to roll off rather than supporting you. The cost makes this issue pretty unacceptable in my opinion.

I ended up replacing it with a Sleeping Duck which has both pocket springs and reinforcement around the edges and the difference is night and day for me. If you do plan to go this route, it might be worth considering these two criticisms but with the 100-night trial, I guess it's up to you. I would caution anyone who is experiencing back pain NOT to ignore it (adjustment period or not) it's been a nightmare these past few months and I wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy.

I think that is because Koala use to (may still do?) give some sort of credit/cashback for a good review after purchase.

      • Koala have never paid for reviews.
They do send an email asking you to review their product, but they never pay

        • OK, I must have been thinking of a different online mattress company.

      • is that not somehow illegal?

tried the Koala and sent it back. Damn thing was so firm I slept on the floor and was more comfortable. Found the same for the Eva mattresses. Bed in a box sounds like a good idea and at lease you can send back if not happy with it. Still sleeping on our old mattress until we can find another decent one.

They harp on about how good they are and all the new innovations but still just some springs and foam. and seriously overpriced at RRP. Sale on every week of some sort that works out about same price each time round.

      • but still just some springs and foam

No springs in the Koala, just foam.

Bought a koala bed, stay away. Sagged in 6 months, no back support. High price for what you get

  • I went to test a few beds the other day. Got onto a sealy that was 3800 and half priced to 1900… worste bed ever. Its so bouncy. I need to replace my 9 year old bed (Forty winks) but its such a mission.

I don't know about koala or any of those beds. I like a firm but comfy bed. So I am waiting for this to ve on special again:

Don't know the brand but felt really nice.

    • TALL!
I'd need a stool just to climb up to that one :(
Some people complain about hitting their heads on the light fittings ;)

    I love the rrp.

Their warranty is useless. When I called for warranty, they charge you a fee. The guy who came to check the bed decided it is normal and you loose your warranty call money. Over priced, poor service. I never buy from them

    • Wow - is charging for a warranty claim even legal?

    • This is what you want to know, thanks for letting us know.

  • +1

When you book for warranty claims, you have to pay call out fee. They only refund it, if they accept your claim. The guy came to my warranty claim decided, it is normal wear and tear. I was out of pocket and no fix either

lol, i worked at sealy for years. also worked at slumbercare for a while. they all use the same foam from the same place.(joyce or dunlop). the more you spend on a bed = the more foam you get = the quicker it will sag. you can get beds with latex in them which will last a long long time if not forever but the problem lies when they add other foams on top of the latex like 13mm memory foam(eventually will sag) or 20F or 32Convoluted, they all sag. even if they offer you just a latex core with a panel on it, the panel doesnt have latex in it, so the panel will sag eventually.

    • So what the solution.. Sleep on the floor?

      • dont go all out spending $1000s on a mattress. well unless you got plenty of money and dont care.

        • I meant the solution for sagging? Is there a way to avoid the sagging..

          • @bigbadboogieman: oh, umm sleep on the floor yeah. nah not really a solution. rotate mattress once a week or so. sealy used to do double sided mats but they stopped that fairly quick due to them lasting to long lol. if you could purchase a latex core and have a thin panel on it then that would be the best way to have it outlast any other mat, not very comfy though.

I was about to buy this mattress in King size from Snooze about a week ago. It was already on sale for this exact price under another sale that was running (any size mattress for the price of a single).

I went home and did a lot of research. Basically the whole mattress industry is a scam. The same brand sells this mattress under a bunch of different names at different stores but it's very difficult to work out which ones are the same. That's so you can't compare them, and the online reviews are few and far between.

I've decided to get the ZZZ Atelier which is about the only mattress that has consistently decent reviews from what I could see.

Most reviews seemed to indicate that Sealy and the like are a total rip off. There's even a Choice article highlighting how the industry is built on bullshit.

    • exactly my words. I did an extensive research and read a lot of news articles and reviews and came to a conclusion that the big brand mattresses are just rip off or a matter of fact the mattress industry is a big scam. Having said that I bought a mattress from zzz atelier and couldn't be happier. Bought 2 more to replace old ones later on.
They are now selling new models(7 zone)which they say are even better.

      • Could you tell me how long you've had your Zzz Atelier mattresses for and how they've lasted so far?

    • +2

yep alot of them are the same. exact same internals but different externals. when i worked at sealy we could buy beds from them at cost. the cheapest queen ensemble was $300 then we would go build it and add extra this extra that. that cheap ensemble they would sell for $300 to the shops and then the shop was selling it for $1000 to $1500. there is also a bed called a crown jewel. their most expensive bed and has sold in myer for $25,000 before. cost price was about $2000. Danny Green would know, we built 4 for him.

      • @Crumydog

Given your industry experience, what would you recommend the average Bruce do when it comes to looking for a mattress? Go for a basic option without the padding layers (you mentioned above how they sag)? I was looking at either Slumberworld or Sandman in Geelong which are local manufacturers - hoping buying from them would be a better option rather than a big brand from a big store. Cheers for your comments thus far

        • +3

its hard to decide really due to them all being basicly the same. nothing wrong with spending $1000s on a bed if you have the money and thats what you want(its your money do what you want). i would still buy a sealy or any other big branded mattress im just letting people know whats inside. most importantly it has to be comfortable for you obviously. look for a good warranty. the crown jewels used to have life time warranty thats why they were so expensive. sealy did double sided mats many years ago but they got rid of them due to them lasting much longer than single sided. double sided could be the go if you want it to last longer, as long as you flip it once a week or once a month. you should rotate your mattress every so often anyway. the more layers of foam the more it will sag after time. but i like super soft so mine always sag lol. firm wont sag as much or as quick as soft but i wouldnt go buy a firm bed just so it will last longer, comfort is most important. anyway look for comfort and warranty because at the end of the day you put a sheet over it anyway. i hope this helps?

ps dont listen to the bs they say about this bed gives better blood flow etc. i laugh at the sales people trying that one

i just wanna add that sealy say they use titanium springs. a long time ago they were advertising this and they got in the sh*t because they werent using titanium or the spring didnt have enough % of titanium in them to be advertising that. i forgot exactly what happened. but they now have a certain percentage of titanium in them and let me tell you it is something like 1% or it could even be as low as 0.1%. i also forgot the exact amount. they are 99% steel with 1% titanium or 99.9% steel with 0.1% titanium lol.

@Crumydog: Thanks for making the effort to reply with your thoughts. Definitely appreciate the input before going forth into the market and dealing with the confusion. Hopefully I can make a decent choice! Cheers
